What rifle/cartridge combination did you use on deer this year.

im not hunting this year, just moved to a new state and havent really prepared for anything like that yet.. next year ill probably hunt with 5.45x39 through an AK-74 :-D

First deer taken with .243 handi rifle @ 80 yds using factory Winchester Supreme 100gr power point just touched the spine topside of lungs. #2 taken with Ruger M-77 (tang safety) 30.06 factory Remington 150gr Corelock @ 40 yds double lung. Neither took a step.

The Ruger was a gift from my wife about 20 yrs ago and I hadn't been using it lately. My wife noticed. I took it because I would be walking through some heavily wooded areas and figured the power would be able to get trough any possible brush. Decided on 150gr cause I'm getting old.

Custom Remington 700 in .308. 165g Accubonds over 44.5g Reloader 15. Accurate gun, but I ended up in the brush after them and made a 25 yard heart shot on the doe mule deer. She didn't go far and I am really starting to like the accubonds as they are four-for-four on shot kills with little meat damage from 25 yards to 125 yards.

passed on a buck today, 3pts on the left and broken off on the right.
6.5 creedmoor, t/c encore, high plains custom gunstock(rifle), 16 1/4" mgm barrel

Thompson Center Encore .50 muzzleloader using Powerbelt 295 grains on top of 100 grains of Triple Seven. I have a picture of the bullet found in the liver but don't get how to post it, I'm asked for an URL.

I used my Winchester 70 in .243 (new this season) for both of the does I've gotten thus far this year. The load I used is a 95 gr BT pushed by H4350 to a muzzle velocity of right around 3,000 fps.

The first shot was a solid heart-lung at around 100 yds, that dropped that doe in her shadow. The second doe was hit solidly in the lung, but a bit higher than ideal, she probably made it 30-40 yards before crashing, but only because she lit out with incredible speed at the shot... I bet she wasn't on her feet for more than a couple seconds after impact; I don't know that I've ever seen anything move so fast. At any rate, I had what I would term highly satisfactory performance and an exit wound with the load combo on both deer, the little .243 is really starting to grow on me.

I haven't used my 30-06 yet this year, but a friend of mine used it to shoot a spike in early November. My buddy got his angles a little off and wound up sending a 165 SGK in through the front right side of the chest, and out through the left front leg. I think the angle definitely contributed to the exit wound, but it was what could conservatively be termed "excessive" none the less. The 165 SGK is definitely a behind the shoulder type bullet on these small Georgia deer.

ar15 and 9mm

killed it dead as a door nail.

Come on man, there's got to be a story behind that, was this an AR-15 and a mystery gun in 9mm used on different deer, or was this an AR-15 chambered in 9mm used on a deer? What 9mm load? How was the performance?

When the season starts Wednesday I'll be stuck using a shotgun and slugs unless I get down to some family land a couple hours south. If I make it down there I'll be using my Mosin that I glass bedded, along with either 150gr PRVI soft points or 150gr hand loaded Hornady soft points.

Ar-15 16" 300 aac blackout (Windham lower, custom upper) with 6-18x50 Bushnell scope. Shooting 125gr nosler ballistic tips pushed by 18 grains of h110.

Winchester model 70, cheap scope, 130 gr. Sierra Gameking over 60 gr. of 780 Supreme. 7 point and 5 point. I could not believe the damage that bullet caused.

Left handed Remington 788 chambered in .308 Winchester, loaded with whatever less expensive Federal 150 grain that Walmart carries. Took an 8 point this year - one shot and he fell down and wiggled a little bit; raised his head once, then laid it back down.

Don't hunt any longer but this past summer I was having my morning coffee on the front deck of my UP camp when 4 does and a 6 point walked around the corner of the house and across the front yard, not 20 yards from me. My AK74 was lying on the top rail of the deck railing. If I decide to stay in the UP for deer season, I will probably use a Mosin Nagant, Finn, 91-30 with a scout scope. This rifle will shoot one inch groups. However, at my camp, the longest shot you will ever get is 50 yards....chris3

very well, I never expected anyone to actually read my comments in one of these threads, normally they are just everyone bragging about their own setup and ignoring everyone elses...

but here she is.

she was at 50 yards at a full run quartering away from me. I shot but hit high and ended up paralyzing her, that is the bullet you see in my hand with the perfect expansion. it lodged just under the hide of the opposite side with about 8 inches of penetration through bone. a second shot to the head put her down for good and was a through and through. I was using handloads and 147gr speer gold dots getting about 1250FPS.

tahununa001 this deer season I was thinking "I wonder if my hi point 9mm carbine would take down a deer if I had to use it in a pinch." And it looks like it works just fine. Will you be using 9mm again next year?

First trip out will be in Alabama next week and MS the following

Rem 700 SPS 25/06 100 grn nosler ballistic tip and 52 grn IMR 4831

Bad medicine!!!!

Mannlicher stocked, Timney triggered 8x57 Persian Mauser, sporting a 60s vintage Bushnell Scope Chief with command post reticle for low light conditions. S&B 196 grs SPs. Great hawg gun and would have been overkill on our little Southern VT racing deer had I seen one legal to shoot. Instead, total bust...

Me...30-06, ammo was reloads using 168 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips.

My wife....270, reloads using 130 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips.

My son....30-06, reloads using 175 grain Berger Hunting VLD's.

Shot at 3 bucks over the 3 days I hunted, two got away due to operator error and a slight case of buck fever...

Took a spike buck at ~50 yards with my Savage 11 Long Range Hunter in 260 Remington (120 grain Nosler Ballistic tip ahead of 36.5 grains of Varget in a re-sized Hornady .308 Match case). Dead center brisket shot head on, ran about 50 yards, bounced off a few trees and snapped one of his spikes off. Half the heart was gone and lungs were mush upon further investigation. Rough guesstimate is about 140 pounds field dressed, and boy is he tasty...

Had the same shot on a similar buck last year with the same results. Really like this rifle, although it is a tidge long for trekking through the thick brush, works out great from a stand. Nice and light, plenty accurate, kind on the shoulder, and puts them down without ruining much meat if you do your part.

Model 70 Winchester 7mm Rem Mag 160 grn Federal Accubond factory ammo--one shot one kill

Ar-15, 5.56/.223 Federal 62 gr Fusion, 2 shots one kill (took a second shot for "insurance" purposes, didn't want to chase a "dead" deer).

Two very different set-ups, but both anchored vensison where the deer stood at the time the shot was fired, going to show that what what some consider too much gun...or not enough gun...is just the right amount of gun when the shooter knows his limitations and hunts within them

I shot a 7pt buck. It was 40 yds with my Marlin 336 30-30,remingtion 150grain factory load
Buck went right down.
