What rifle/cartridge combination did you use on deer this year.

Ive so far shot one big male with my remington 700bdl and 180 grain sierra gameking and another deer with my husqvarna 1900 6,5x55 with 120 grain nosler ball tip.

I used the same rifle I almost always use when it comes to hunting anything but small game.

This year = M14S/ open sights/ 168gr Barnes TSX.

Dead deer at inside of 100 yards while stalk hunting in the brush. Hasty sling standing when the shot was made.

The wife killed hers from a stand using her M1A-A1 and 165gr SGK BTSP.
232 yards via ARMS 18 mount and SS 6x scope.

Niether bullet was recovered, as the typical exit wound was the result of both.

I work it a little differently.

Rightly or wrongly I have set it up as a calibre for specific species as this is how the rifles were bought.

Small antelope from Steenbok to Blesbok and Black Wildebeest get the 6.5mm.

Blue Wildebeest and Kudu get the 30-06.

Eland get the .375 (yet to shoot an Eland)

Had along in rifle zone an AR-15 as back up, and .357 Ruger.

I used a Weatherby Mark V Ultra Light in .243 Winchester shooting 90 grain Nosler Accubonds this hunting season. Both deer I shot were DRT! I intended to take my standby Weatherby Mark V Ultra Light in .280 Remington but the range from my blind to my deer feeder is only 55 yards. They fell like they were hit with Thor's hammer.

I like the .280 Remington or the 30-06 Springfield for other types of deer and hog hunting. Over long beanfields a 7mm Remington Magnum would be a good choice, too. After hunting all these years it comes to my mind that bullet placement is the most important part of the equation. A bullet in the heart or lung area almost always scores a kill from just about any centerfire rifle. So many times in the past I've talked to hunters that have the "iron deer" syndrome; they feel they must move up to the magnums because the deer they shot failed to drop dead.

I used my F150 with the 3.5 liter turbo. Took a nice 8 point whitetail on opening day. All figured, jerky should run about $200/lb if anyone needs some.

Remington 700 BDL VLS chambered in .243 Win. Shooting 100 Grain Pointed Soft Point. Squeezed trigger 3 times 3 deer have dropped. Have full confidence in this gun. I swapped a guy that wanted my old ADL .243 for it; Gun For Gun said it was too heavy for him. I put a Older School Tasco World Class Plus on it and zeroed @ 100 yds. "A Tack Driver" at 150 yds. Drop in their tracks.

None so far, but I am going deer hunting next week for 4 days and I'll be carrying a pair of 30-06's this time, I think. Although I could switch out and take one 30-06 and a 7x57. What I currently plan to take is the Sako AIII and HK SLB 2000K.





And I'll be carrying my Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 mag for one day of pistol hunting.

Marlin 1894S 44 mag with 260 gr WFN cast bullet at 1660 fps and 1591 ft/lbs.
It is an older gun I just bought and this deer was the first shot fired at game. The bullet went through the rib cage side to side taking out the top of the heart and angling up and out the far side of the neck (very odd path). Later that night another new to me old Marlin 1895G 45-70 did a nice job on a big boar hog. The next night the little 1894 took its second shot at game and got a nice sow hog which was butchered that same night. Had hog chili today. My wife said it didn't taste like deer chili and I said to taste like deer chili it had to be deer! She called me a smart #$$.
