Hello all,

The last couple of days i have been searching for my next rifle to be had when i get the money. I know what i want but dont know who if anyone makes it! I would be using this rifle for long range shooting 1,000 yrds plus. It would be for fun targets and making wholes in paper. I know there are a lot of rifles that can do that but i was hoping i would have one that was tube feed or had a mag that was flush with the bottom of the rifle. Along with 5-10 round capacity. I would prefer used/ used surplus as there cheaper then new but as long as its under $1,000 for rifle only.

Thanks for the help

Lets list what i "want"

It has to be a able to accept a scope fairly easly
It has to be at least 0-1.5 moa (i meant as long as its not above 2 or 3 so 1 is fine but i have changed it now)if its a used rifle then able to make it into 1 moa with out spending the bank
It has to be still be hard hitting at 1,000 so even though .22 "could" make it i want something with more umf.

What i would really like

I would like it to be able to do 1,000 yrd shots
I would like it to be able to have 5-10+ rds capacity
To have a wood stock-perhaps interchangeable with a synthetic if i need to get more MOA out of it

What i hope it has
I hope its tube feed
I hope it does not have an ugly mag sticking out of the bottom
I hope its a stream line rifle meaning no ugly mags sticking out.

I hate to burst your bubble, but you need at least 1 MOA if not less to even think about shooting 1000 yards. Then again the optics to shoot that far are at least $600+ if not more. Then figure in all of the fun of trying to guess wind and such. Not to mention this thing called mirage which is a pain. If you really want a long range beginner package get something like a Savage LE in .308 and a decent scope with mil dots. Should run around $900.

Also the power range you are talking about is insufficient. A .308 is generally about an 800 yard rifle. Those who shoot longer than that with one are doing so with highly specialized equipment. If I was looking at 1000 yards regularly, I would go to the 300 magnums. (Probably a .338 Lapua.) The problem this makes is, these casings are bigger, some of these rifles have a 3-rd magazine. If you want a flush bottom, you won't be able to get the capacity you are looking for.

Definitely not in your budget, but take a look at these custom rifles from http://www.vandykerifles.com/ for a reach out and touch someone at 1000 yards set-up. I especially like the Tactical Eliminator M24 Supermagnum .338 Lapua Custom rifle. Price-a mere $3775; optics and accessories not included.

i think your asking alot to stay under 1000.00$. unless that dosent include quality glass??? and then your even asking alot. i mean, you may be able to get a used rifle and completly restore it into a tackdriver, but unless you can do it yourself...

i could be wrong though. this is just my opinion.

try reading this. it has a lot of useful info that will help expesially on the surpluse rifles.

http://www.snipercentral.com/mosin.htm

i would try a savage f class/ target rifle.

http://savagearms.com/12FTR.htm

to shoot accuratly out to 1000 yards and beyond, you will be looking at lots of money into ammo. expessialy if you do not reload. a .308 will suffice for paper punching at 1000 yards, but there are better rounds. like the .260 rem. which outperforms the .308 in all asspects. thery are alot more, but the .260 is comercially loaded, and easier to come by.

also, check out remingtons website..

http://www.remington.com/products/f.../model_700/model_700_xcr_compact_tactical.asp

also, read this:

http://www.6mmbr.com/223Rem.html

has a lot of info on the .223 and about 3/4 the way down, runs through some good guns that may be of intrest to you.

Most of the 6.5s are the current hot ticket for 1000 yard shooting. Better ballistics than a 300 winmag, and a lot more pleasant to shoot. I've never seen this "tube" magazine you're talking about, except on a lever action.

Wow thanks for all the answer i am looking at the web sites/rifles now.

Yes i was hoping it would all be under $1,000 but if it cant be done it cant be done. Just means i have to save up longer.

By 2-3 MOA i meant the max as in sub-moa was fine. But if 2 or 3 makes such shots imposable then i will stick to what has been said.

As far as ammo any round that can make it out to 1,000 and still have power. Did not know sub 308 rounds could make it, changing OP to reflect.

sounds like your looking for a over-grown Marlin 981.

Problem. you want to shoot 1,000 yards, AND have a tube mag. the only cartridges capable of that are going to be bottlenecked cartridges taht are pointy aerodynamic bullets. this means KABOOM in tub fed rifles.

Yeah a marlin would be nice, what about the new "soft" tip ammo they have for lever actions. Also a 5rd striper clip would be ok along with other clip loading. It seems though that there is no such thing so i will have to give up on some of what i want.

I believe a 1 MOA shooter would yield approximately 10-inch groups as a best case at 1000 yds. That is not bad actually.

Heavy bullets are less affected by wind. That's why you wouldn't really want to use a 243 with 100 gr bullets.

A 50 cal rifle would do the trick. :)

The 1000 meter shooters at the range I shoot at use Remington or Savage short actions custon tuned, barreled etc. to the tune of not less than $1800. Most are in 6.5/284. Or!!! Some are starting to think custom 300 R.U.M., Then comes the scope and all the other little things like spotting scope, sling, jacket. Probably in the $4000.00 range to be a serious competitor. I just stand back and watch in amazement!!!

50 cal is illegal here in the free state of CA, so it could not be 50 cal.

Did not know it would cost that much for a 1,000 yrd rifle, thought it only went up that much in price for distances of 1200-1500 where it got really expensive.

Can you get by with say...700 yards and get a 308?

Are you training for a competition?

I picked 1,000 yrds because it sounded good. But i may have to rethink it, if i go down to 700-800 i know that puts me in the range of 308 and 30-06. I want a rifle i can grow into for distance shooting instead of buy 5 along the way as "I" get better. But i think it makes more sense to start with 700 yrds and expand from there when i have the knowledge and money to go farther.

The next two Appleseed shoots close to me i am planning to go to. That will help me with shooting at far distances, 500yrds. Not training for a competition just fun, i will be getting into pistol competitions though.

To shoot reasonably accurately at 1000 yards, and stay around $1K, look at a Savage 12FV in .223, .243, .308. Similar calibers include the 6.5's including the .260 Remington. The 12 FV comes with a 26" barrel, and reasonable twist rates, which can keep all the cartridges supersonic well past 1000 yards. The rifle will run around $500-550. A 12 F/TR would be perfect but runs around $950.

Many decent scopes are under $500, I'd look for a minimum of 14x, but would really prefer 20-24x for 1000 yards. Burris FFII, Bushnell 3200 series come to mind.

My gun is a 12FV in .243 with a 6.5-20 Weaver Grand Slam, it holds .5 MOA out to 600 yards with no problem, that's the farthest I've shot it, but I expect it to stay sub-moa to 1000. I have recently added a Sharpshooter Supply LVT stock, never have bothered to adjust the accutrigger as it is near perfect out of the box. My total price including the rifle, new stock, scope, rings and bases was $1100, I bought the optics new from Natchess Shooters Supply.

Yep looking on savages website they have some nice rifles, the mags dont stick out so they look nice too. And a nice one you have too!

Also looking at the Model 110FP, Model 10FP $670 vs Model 12FV $620. The Model 110GXP3/Model 111G/Model 111GCNS is nice at $633/$533/$613 with wood stock and a choice of 25-06 Rem., 270 Win., 30-06 Spfld., 7mm Rem. Mag., 300 Win. Mag :what: for long action then they have them in short to. :what:

Now to decide on a caliber! Thinking maybe the 30-06 only becuase i already have my 3 M1 Garands help keep ammo the same caliber/ for reloading if i ever get into it.

Forget a tube magazine, you cannot load pointed bullets in a tube and that is definitely what you need for any range over about 200 yards.

Savage is your best buy in a rifle for good quality and good accuracy. It may not be wonderful - mine was not what you read about on the Internet and the gunzines - but it will be a good value for the money. And you have to have a good scope to go with it.

.308 is a fine 1000 yard caliber. Kind of like the Savage rifle, not the best, but the most available. You have to have the right ammunition or be a proficient handloader, and you have to be able to judge the wind, but the guns will shoot that far with fine accuracy... if you can.

I would think i am minute of horse barn right now at 700 yrds... at best!

Looking at all these rifles why are there no semi-autos? not moa enough for that distance?

Not to sound silly, but do you have somewhere to shoot that far? I wanted to build a long distance shooter, but the farthest I can shoot around here (with any sort of frequency) is 100yds. That makes my ideal bench gun a rimfire. :D
