Returning home from a local gun show, my uncle and I had a discussion on what (5) firearms would be a minimum quality arsenal for someone just getting into guns (hunting, home defense, protection and/or practice). Open for any and all suggestions.

A hunting shotgun, a big game caliber hunting rifle, a rimfire rifle, a semi-automatic pistol, and a revolver.

I would not call that a 'great' arsenal. Not at all.
If I had four or five of each, then we're talking "great arsenal".

A 22LR rifle; a 22LR handgun; a .223 or .308 rifle, bolt action or semi, your choice; a 12 gauge shotgun, and one centerfire handgun, 38/357, 9mm, or 45 ACP caliber for ease of ammo.

I would get:
-9mm autoloading pistol.
-12 Gauge Pump
-.22LR Rifle
-.22LR pistol
-.223 AR

Its all preference.

+1 to CoRoMo. I would add that the shotgun should have multiple barrels (HD, bird/trap, rifled).

Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870
AR-15
10/22
Single-Six Convertible
SBH

I'll play:

A 22LR rifle
A 12ga. shotgun (or a 20ga if you prefer)
A revolver - Something along the lines of a .357 will give you some good
choices. Use .38spl for practice and +p or full .357 for social
situations or even shotshell loads.
A semi-auto pistol for higher capacity needs.
A rifle - Maybe an AR, an AK if you want something with high capacity mags.
Or a larger caliber hunting type rifle.

Looks like CoRoMo beat me to it. Took me too long to type.

If I was limited to no more than five, and to add specificity to my previous post...

Beretta 391 12ga.
Ruger M77 .270
Ruger 10/22
Springfield XD45
Ruger New Model Blackhawk .357/9mm

I already own three of these, the other two are on the list.

Recce style AR 16-18" bbl
Springfield XD-9 Service
Remington 870 in 12 gauge
.308 precision bolt action rifle
.22lr pistol

Provided I would not be scrounging for ammo:
1911 chambered in 10mm.
.22LR rifle
.30-06 hunting rifle
12 gauge shotgun
AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel.

1 semi auto pistol, in a service caliber but small enough to carry (i.e. G19/G23 or a Sig p239 or something)

1 pump or semi-auto shotgun, medium barrel length (~22-26") that accepts screw in chokes. Will serve double duty as home defense and hunting

1 AR15, 16" barrel M4gery

1 M1A, can do double duty as a battle rifle or used for hunting

1 Ruger 10/22

.22lr CZ Bolt Rifle, or a Semi, your preference

.30-06/.308 CZ 550 American

12 gauge Remington 870 Pump Shotgun

9mm CZ P-01 Pistol

AR15 from a reputable mfg. /w 20" barrel milled down to the pencil configuration

1. Mossberg .12 ga. Slugs/Birdshot

2. M1 Garand 30/06

3. AR-15 .223

4. 1911 .45

5. GSG-5 .22LR

I'm all set....

One big one, one middle sized, a couple of little ones, and one that spreads out when shot. It just depends on your lifestyle.

- .22 LR, either a heavy barreled target pistol, or a rifle; accuracy being the key here. This one is for most of your meat harvesting.

- an accurized bolt rifle in some variant of a .308 caliber (.308 Win., .30-06, .300 Win. Mag.).

- a semi auto rifle of carbine length in .223, preferably an AR.

- a shotgun, preferably in 12 gauge.

- a large caliber pistol, either semi-auto or revolver, in either .45 ACP or .44 mag/.44 Special.

I would consider this to be a minimum for an arsenal, but not a great arsenal. However this is not a minimum for survival. My survival list would be one pistol and one rifle. Caliber .4+ for the pistol, and .30+ for the rifle.

Fortunately for me, I have way more toys than that.

First time to this forum:

My Benelli SBE II 12 ga
My Rem Nylon 66 22 rimfire
1911 45 ACP
Wife's Ruger Single 6
MIA or MI Gurand (just cause I want one).

But that is just me!

A great arsenal?

I'd go for an all steel and concrete structure, with a nice lawn and a sleek interior, complete with stainless steel fixtures and mood lighting. I'd probably have some blast doors, and maybe a watchtower and a helicopter pad on top.

:p

Mossberg 500 in 12 Gauge with 18 and 28 inch barrels
AR 15 A3 with 16 inch barrel and 22 LR conversion and standard 5.56 chambering
AR 10 with 20 inch barrel chambered in 308
1911 with 22 LR conversion as well as standard 45 ACP
Glock 23 with 40, 357 sig and 9mm barrels

I think I cheated a little bit. :)
