What would be a great arsenal (limit 5)

an AR-15, an AK-47, a .22 rifle, a 9mm pistol, and a big-caliber bolt-action with a good scope on it.

Pretty much covers need and want for any situation that a gun would be called for in. If I could have one final choice I'd go with a Mossberg shotgun as well.

Different Kool-Aid

I would get a Vulcan Cannon (usually comes with an A-10 attached)
A 120mm smoothbore (with its M1A2 Abrahms)
Ma Deuce (in its quad design on the half trac)
A Ruger 77/22 MkII in .22lr
A Sig 232 in .380
A fella can dream can't he!

I have owned the same 6 'basic needs' firearms for a few years now. . .semi-auto 12ga; .22 bolt rifle scoped; .22 pistol scoped; .357 revolver; 9mm pistol hi-cap; Russian SKS. I recently added (w/in last 5 yrs) 30/30 lever action and a .32 pocket pistol. My selection was based on my needs/usefulness.

1. AK Variant in 7.62x39
2. Mossberg 590 12gauge
3. Ruger 10/22
4. Mil-Spec 1911
5. S&W .357 Magnum 4" bbl like a 686

Nah, I'd just knock the 10/22 off the list and take an RPG-7 instead, that way you can knock down the other guy's helicopter.

Keeping in mind the part about a person just getting into guns:

-A bolt-action .22LR, which is the best tool IMO for a beginner to learn rifle shooting basics
-A .22LR handgun such as a Walther P22 or SIG-Sauer Mosquito, again for learning the basics
-An AR-15, gets a foot in the centerfire door while maintaining minimal recoil, plus its useful for a variety of tasks...and you can "cheat" on the 5-gun limit with new uppers and caliber conversions
-A pump-action or semi-auto 12 gauge, perhaps no gun is more versatile and recoil is manageable for newer shooters with lighter 2.75-in loads
-A 9mm handgun for defensive useage, practice, fun, etc

Indianashooter, welcome to the forum:

Although this is a somewhat rediculous topic for a thread I have to add my two cents.

Oh brother. If it's ridiculous, then why would you even participate? You must not think that it's too ridiculous.

P.S. what's up with all the references to .22s? I thought we were trying to kill things with our guns? : / lol

Yes, because hundreds upon hundreds of millions of critters haven't fallen to the .22 lr cartridge.... have they?

And I must reiterate that a .22 handgun won't even think about breaking into the top 5 in importance in 98% of people's needs, IMO. That's way to few guns with way too many 'needed' types that belong in the top 5 or so. A rimfire handgun *might* make the top 15. To take one example that is representative of many in this thread where a .22 handgun supplants a much more important item (IMO), take SpeedAKL's list, which does not even include a centerfire rifle with more power than a .223.

I'm surprised by how many people list a revolver AND a semiauto pistol. For me, I'd rather have more selection amongst rifles than handguns. It would be interesting to hear some feedback from the folks with the taste for multiple handguns on so short a list. Anyway, for my picks....
1. Defensive caliber handgun... anything from .38 on up, whatever floats your boat
2. Shotgun... semiauto or pump, 12 or even 20 ga. if you can handle it better
3. Battle rifle... Buy American, get the AR15 :)
4. Hunting rifle.... 30-06 is the popular choice, but I think a 270, 300, 7mm, etc could substitute
5. The swing spot.... nearly everyone throws in some kind of .22lr here, I can agree with that, or sub. for another of the most useful and time proven rifles out there, a 30-30 lever action. There was another thread that had something to do with the most useful rifle out there, and it seemed like the 30-30 Marlins and Winchesters were the unofficial winners, so it's surprising to me that they get so little attention here!

For me, versatility and utility would be the key to my selection.

1) Colt M1911 Government .38 Super with complete assemblies to convert it to 9mm. and .22LR
2) S&W Model 686
3) Mossberg Model 500 12 ga. with different barrels
4) Colt AR-15 .223 with complete upper assemblies for different caliber conversions
5) Springfield Armory M1A .308

I'll play too ;

1 -- 12ga. Rem., Mossberg,Saiga -- pump or auto
2 --- .223 , 308 , or 7.62x39 - Hi-Cap semi auto -- .308 with optics would be my choice
3 --- 9mm/45acp/.40 -- Hi-Cap semi auto ---- 10mm if you reload
4 --- .22rf bolt or auto rifle with optics

Those four guns would fill 99.9% of anything needing done;

5 -- Optional -- a .22rf revolver or semi handgun
5 -- Optional --- a large bore revolver -- my choice, a S&W--610 or 625 or 629
5 -- Optional -- a black powder FLINTLOCK rifle !!!! Why ?? Push comes to shove -- no stores/buying needed -- flints can be found free in the ground , black powder could be homemade , and projectiles could be casted from soft/recycled metals

A bolt-action rifle, in a good all-around caliber. My fave is .308
A shotgun, something reliable and versatile...pump is fine.
A .22LR rifle
A semi-auto pistol of your choice
A T/C Contender....just because it's a fine range and hunting pistol. Not to mention you just need to buy new barrels to change calibers. In that manner it makes shooting a wide range of calibers for hunting or range rather affordable compared to buying a smorgasbord of guns.

I'll play. Personal preference for hunting and sport shooting, so ...

1. 12 gauge pump - Mossberg 500, preferably with multiple barrels/chokes
2. Scoped bolt action hunting rifle - Rem 700 in .30-06 or Model 7 in .308
3. Scoped bolt action .22 - CZ 452 or Rem 541T
4. .357 mag revolver - 4-inch Ruger GP100

I believe those four would cover just about every basic need. Not sure what I'd pick for number five ... Maybe a Marlin 1894 in .357/38 to share ammo with the revolver ... or a Ruger Single Six in .22LR/.22WMR.

1. S&W .357 revolver
2. Marlin 39a .22
3. Handi w/.30 cal barrel, 12 ga barrel
--- That would be minimum for me. But 2 more?
4. '92 .357 Rifle
5. 1911 .45 w/.22 slide

Here's mine which is what every American should own (IMO)
30/06 bolt action
12 ga bird gun
.45 semi auto pistol
22 semi auto rifle
S&W 357 revolver

1. Any 12 Gauge pump, 26" Bbl.
2. Marlin Model 60 .22lr
3. 16" AR Variant .223
4. 30-06 any platform, nice 4-12 scope
5. HK USP 45 Tactical

Feeling better about my gun purchases, after reading some of the responses...

I'd go (and have for the most part, went)...

- P229 in .40S&W w/9mm conversion barrel (check)
- 10/22 (check)
- Mossberg Mav 12ga w/18.5" HD and 28" dove hunting barrels (check)
- AR-15 or AK-47 (or both! check!)
- .308 bolt action (check - Marlin XS7)

In order to bend the rules, the above would be my five, the below would be my wife's and kids'...

- SKS
- Walther P22
- Ruger SP101
- Taurus PT-92
- 870 express in 20ga
- the AK or AR (whichever one I didn't claim)
- Millennium Pro in 9mm

hunting - can't beat an 30-06 for all around game in the USA
home defense - Good ole 12 guage
protection - 40 cal of your choice
practice - .22lr..pretty cheap ammo
AR15 ....Can be used for any of the above
