Am looking to buy an AK type rifle in couple of months. Hence what would the best option be:

Arsenal, Saiga, CZ858, VZ58, Izmash or something else?

Would one that was manufactured with a two position swtich be more preferable to one with a 3 position switch, where the happy setting is disabled by a blocker?

Am based in europe so dont quite have the same parts restricitions.
Much appreciated.

Saiga and Arsenal came out with the half converted legion last year. this year they are coming out with the fully converted Saiga legion. so technically you will have a real russian AK with all the evil features.

where in Europe do you live? if its legal why dont you just go ahead and get a full russian AK?

VZ 58 without a doubt is the better weapon, but is not compatable with the AK platform. Having said that, I really like all of my AKs. In the current market and this late in the game, you can get the VZ 58 for the same or better price.

XD the full version AK is also an option.
Am based in France, and the Russian AK's are all surplus weapons with the happy switch disabled by the addidion of a small piece of metal welded on to prevent the switch being moved to happy. :)

Am also enamoured of the StG 44 however the availability of the 7.92x33 Krutz ammo is a damper.

Pulse that is a thought. Anyhow am still window shopping awaiting authorization. :)

Saiga is the ultimate AK bang-for-buck.

a CZ is not an actual AK design. It sorta looks like one, but when you open it up, you'll be surprised.

Actually in France the Military conversions from Romania, Cz, Norinco and the actual Kalashnikov are a lot cheaper. Especially the ones with the happy switch welded shut.
Thre rest are more expensive. Most expensive being the ones converted to calibers such as .222 Remington or .22 LR.

Comment ca va?

You would probably do fine with any of the above. But if I had access to a real Kalashnikov I'd be all over it in an instant. That said, I am also a huge fan of the VZ-58. As mentioned above, though, be mindful of the total lack of the compatibility between it and AK parts.

If you get that Kalashnikov, please post some pictures of it. There are lots of Saigas in the U.S. but very few all-Russian military-style AKs are in the hands of private citizens here.

seriously... the one you can get your hands on.

if you have choices.... I'd pick a nicely executed Saiga conversion or a Galil.

I know your on the other side of the pond... but Classic Arms has reasonably priced Galil's right now.

Afy, just out of curiosity, are you allowed full auto?

if you have permission to buy one with a happy Switch, i can give you the address of a dealer that sells production new Bulgarian AK47 for ~700€.

only if you have all the needed papers ofcourse.

Pulse,

Unfortunately truly happy guns are illegal since 1995.
:(:(

um 1986 is probibly what your thinking of.

guns made, and registered before 1986 are legal but prohibitively expensive

He's in France. They had new full-autos until 1995.

Get a real Russian one with the happy switch blocked. If you can't get a Russian one, get a Chinese one with the happy switch blocked.

In other news, I absolutely hate you. :) I swear you posted just to brag and make me feel bad about our weapons laws.

damn it. thats the second one tonight, that i knew but my brain farted out on. i remember convos with afy about French law. my apologies for interrupting the thread

man im going to try not to talk for the rest of tonight.(/ this morning)

The OP does not live in the United States. He lives in Europe.

Please think about your answers. This isn't our usual "which AK is best (in the United States)" thread.

He doesn't have the BATFE (he can have a 3 holed AK - just has to have a neutered fun switch)

He doesn't have an embargo on Russian or Chinese or other [evil country here] weapons.

So long as it's not fully automatic (it can have the 3 holes), he can get it.

The world's finest AK rifles are built in Las Vegas, NV. Arsenal Inc (arsenalinc.com) make a line of milled-receiver AK's that are second to none. I have a SAM7-S that I wouldn't trade for any battle rifle in the world.

The equivalent of my SAM7-S now retails for about $1100 and it's worth every penny.

Robinson Armament (robarm.com) makes an AK-variant called the XCR in 7.62X39. It utilizes an AK operating system and is indeed very impressive. It retails at $1600 and is the only rifle that rivals my Arsenal rifle. If you're looking to spend that kind of money, it would be an outstanding selection. I may be buying one of their XCRs in .308---I'm that impressed with it.

The one you don't own, AR all the way

Sorry, just kidding, I passed on the AKs and bought ARs. However, everyone told me Saigas are the way to go. I was looking for a Saiga .308 , it seems to be the best bang for your Commie buck from what everyone has told me. Perhaps, if I can find a smoking deal and they are legal, in 6 months or so, I will get myself a Saiga .308 for my birthday and try to have it converted :D.

I never, ever, EVER thought that I would read a thread here that would make me jealous of the gun laws of FRANCE!!!

I guess the French truly are more logical than the Americans. Over here, if a gun was ever at any point in its lifetime fully-automatic, it is permanently marked as a machine gun and can only be had with many, many thousands of dollars and special government hoops to jump through.

Over there in France, I guess they're just like, "uh, let's just convert it to semi-automatic."

Is there any way you might be able to send us over a few of your politicians?

But in some states in USA, cannot you simply convert a semi auto AK to a fully automatic? I know in Oregon all you have to do is get a special license for $300 and you can own fully auto rifles. I was told it is not so hard to convert semi auto AKs to fully. I am not sure about ARs.
