What would the best AK type of weapon be?

But in some states in USA, cannot you simply convert a semi auto AK to a fully automatic? I know in Oregon all you have to do is get a special license for $300 and you can own fully auto rifles. I was told it is not so hard to convert semi auto AKs to fully. I am not sure about ARs.

The 1986 FOPA law had the Hughes Amendment that froze the number of machine guns for civilian use. These are called "transferable" machine guns. Any new machine gun regardless if originally a machine gun or a converted machine gun that was produced after May of 1986 is a "non transferable" machine gun in which those weapons can only be possessed by government entities and personnel and of course the manufacturers themselves. Civilians are a no go.

A civilian can own one as long as they pay the $200 tax and it is legal in their area BUT that machine gun had to be registered before May of 1986.

a Class III license right

Actually, hell, when I think about it...

Get a Valmet. That's like the Cadillac of AKs AND you can get the real deal, new.

Are you limited to barrel lengths or can you get a shortened carbine length (like a real sub-16" carbine, none of this welded muzzle crap we have over here).

Russian, Bulgarian and Polish AK's seem to be the best quality... I don't know if you wanna wait around a few months in this market... I have a feeling AR's and AK's are just going to keep rising in price for the next few months. I saw WASR's go up a $100 in a month between gun shows, they're still going for under $500 places online but you gotta be quick.

The OP does not live in the United States. He lives in Europe.

Please think about your answers.

He is not subject to the politically driven price frenzy here in the USA.

.... and why in the heck would he want to buy a neutered-and-5x-the-price-Arsenal (which'd be a $7,500 AK by the time it got reshipped and reimported back to Europe) from Las Vegas, Nevada, when he can get the real Bulgarian Kalashnikov straight from Bulgaria? WASR? Why, when he can get a real Romanian AIM or AIMS-74 (with the go-fast parts altered for his local laws)

The OP lives in Europe, people. This is not a "best AK in the USA" thread.

Some of y'all are embarrassing your countrymen with your comprehension skills.

France FTW. How have we gone all this time without knowing that France's rifle laws are actually less restrictive than ours in the US? Or have other people known this? I always assumed that France was like the UK in terms of guns - you can imagine my surprise at reading this thread and finding out that they're allowed to have mil-surp AK's converted to semi-auto only, whereas here in the Communist States of America it's "once a machine gun, ALWAYS a machine gun."

France's gun laws are a LOT restrictive than the UK, but a lot more restrictive in a number of ways than the US.
We do need to jump through hoops to buy pistols and nice semi autos. But once it is done... fairly straightforward. Also we are only allowed a maximum of 12 weapons between handguns, and semi auto rifles per person. But hey I am not complaining... :):)

There was a neat thread here a while back that showed some of our French friends shooting AR-15s. It's nice to know that people in other countries get to have fun guns too! And I wonder what it's like seeing an AR-15 as a "foreign rifle." ;)

It is kind of amusing to observe foreign civilian shooters and collectors handling "our" ARs the way we handle "their " AKs and other rifles. "Whoa, cool! Maybe some U.S. Cav Trooper used this in Afghanistan! And it even came with a bayonet and scabbard! I want a matching canteen and an original American-style sling!"

AR's are very expensive in France. Typically above 1500 Euro's a piece.
Ruskie AK's can be had for 350.

What about the milled Poly Tech Legend Series AK-47/S ? Not imported into the U.S. since 1989. Are they still being made in China? If so, are the French allowed to import them?

I have to say, I am jealous of some of France's gun laws:). It seems like a far more reasonable approach towards "evil" imported guns. If only we could have those laws coupled with many of the more open gun laws in the US....

The best AK type rifle above all others is the Israeli Maadi. They are about US$2,000 + here is the USA.

The Israeli's didnt make the Maadi the Egyptians did. you might be thinking of the Galil

MIgunguy... probably. I havent seen any personally. Then again I havent been to every gun shop in France.
But I have seen nice WWII Lugers for 200 euros, as well as some really exotic stuff dirt cheap in really small shops. I paid less for my Win 70 than the Vz 24.

Thank you everyone... will update in due course. Right now awaiting my paperwork...
