By spartan I mean no fat, only what you need. Maximum 10 guns. This includes all pistols, shotguns, and rifles. This isn't an apocalypse type list, it is a list of guns that you need for sport, hunting, and recreation. A list of guns that you know, can take care of, and be good with. There plenty of room for character though. Post each gun and say why it should be on your list. A lot of times we get too many safe queens, too many that sit and do not shoot. I'll need a little while to think of my ten guns.

Well I wrote mine out.
Rifles
-Ar 15 carbine, The most accurate assualt weapons platform that I would use to defend myself and my liberty with.
-PTR 91 or AR10, Don't own them yet but one would be more choice of battle rifle to do the same as ar-15 except a little more versatile as a shtf gun.
-Marlin guide gun, .45-70 will kill anything on any continent 100 yds or closer, and it's cool to down load and cast for
-Marlin .357 1894, as an all around woods bumming gun, it will take rabbits and squirrels with .38's and anything up to dear and even black bear under 100 yds and a great companion to my revolver
-Enfield .303 no. 4, just love it, still can do a lot as a field gun too.
-H&R .243 bolt, my first gun, easy to shoot, good for pronghorn if I ever go out west but if I ever shoot the barrel out it will become a .257 roberts or a 6.5 swede.
-H&R Targeteer .22, love the gun and you gotta practice with a .22
Handguns
Cz 85 combat and kadet kit, a 9mm and .22 rolled into one, is a concealed carry gun for urban environments when I want more rounds than a 6 gun
Colt model .357, 4" barrel six gun will protect me from critters or men when I cal upon it
Shotguns
A pump with an 18-20" barrel and magazine extension, not sure if I'd want a rib with 2 beads or a ghost ring but it is the most versatile gun in the northeast, this also goes on my must get list

Remington 870/Mossberg 500 - Atrociously reliable, multipurpose (hunting/defense/trap), 12ga ammo is cheap and common. I personally think clay shooting is one of the most fun shooting sports and a great way to get other people into shooting.

.30-06 bolt-action rifle (Remington 700, savage 110, etc) - Scope, this big enough to hunt any North American big game.

AR-15 derivative - Defense and just plain fun, not to mention that this is a great apocalypse gun to own.

1911 pistol - So much fun, accurate, use it for competing, infinitely customizable.

Plastic pistol (Glock or xD) in 9mm - Cheaper shooting, better for taking friends shooting than a .45, I'll probably die before it does.

.357 or .44 magnum revolver - Carry while outdoors, also a gun that's great to show around.

10/22 - I'm not sure this needs a reason, I think most gun enthusiasts know about how much cheap fun these are.

AK or derivative - Bigger caliber could be more useful than .223, ubiquitous parts and ammunition, so cheap you have to own one.

.22 Caliber revolver or pistol (or a conversion kit for the 1911) - Cheap plinking fun and the cheapest way to build handgun skills.

.50bmg rifle - Because...well, if s*** hits the fan and you have to defend yourself, this is a pretty good way of reaching out and stopping cars or trucks, or just reaching out 2/3 of a mile and touching someone. Did I mention that you can make 1000yd shots with it :p?

And I only own a third of them...yet. I think that after boring stuff like apartments, and cars, and that malarky, a .50bmg or a real AR might be the first thing I buy once I move.

Plain, original...

1911 Colt .45 Auto

Colt .22 Automatic Pistol

Model 1897 Winchester, 12 Gauge Shotgun

.303 Lee-Enfield Mk III Rifle

S&W 'M&P' Snubby, .38 Special

My focus is on commonality of calibers with military and law enforcement, parts with the most widely owned guns.

SKS
AR15
9mm Glock (17, 19)
10/22
870 12-ga
.357 revolver (sp101)
Ruger .22 pistol (Mk ii)
7.62 NATO bolt action (Mauser, Enfield)
maybe a pocket rocket (e.g., PM9)

I have at least one in each category and don't feel any need for non-mil/LEO calibers at all. Certainly less than 10 is still a fine collection)

A mix of old and new:
6" Colt Trooper Mark III in 357 mag
4" Colt Diamondback or Smith Model 18 (22's)
6" Model 57 Smith
Ruger Mark II (22) with 5.5" heavy barrel
Remington 541-S (22)
Marlin 39A (22)
Remington Model 700 BDL in 270 win
Remington Model 700 BDL in 243 win
Remington Model 700 VTR in 223 or Smith 442 (a toss up)
Remington 870 12 ga with 26" barrel and a slug barrel

10 guns spartan?

If I only have nine would this give me a valid excuse to get one more so I could have the minimun?

Spartan in my mind would be 3.
One rifle
One shotgun
One pistol

What I have now is about as spartan as it gets.

2 long range rifles (Enfield, FNAR)
2 short range rifles (Win 94, CX4)
2 shotguns (870, S-12)
5 handguns (1911's, PX4, Cougar)

My list would be
A 1911-Easy to work on, lots of parts, reloading it is a snap, brass lasts forever.

A Ruger 10/22-Easy to work on, Ammo is cheap and available, fun to shoot.

A CZ75 in 9mm-Cheap ammo, unlike a Glock I can reload for my CZ, very tough.

An AR15-I can work on it in my garage, I have built two and I understand them.

A Remington 870 in 12 gauge-Easy to find ammo, tried and true action

A Remington SP10

A Remington 700 in 300 Win Mag-I can take any game on the continent, wide bullet selection.

An M1 Garand with an adjustable gas plug-I can shoot any 30-06 ammo EXCEPT Federal because of the soft primers, I have a lot of ammo for this rifle, reloading is a snap.

A 1903 Springfield in original condition-Wide selection of ammo, very strong action.

An M1A-Easy to find ammo, very strong action.

Rem 700 LTR for a long arm.
Ruger 10/22. Because everyone needs a 22 rifle.
Rem 870 shotgun with multiple barrels including a 20" and 8 shot extension, 26" modified and a 30" full choke.
CZ-75 with Kadet conversion kit. Handgun has to be comfortable for both me and any woman. Kadet conversion is useful for training and practice.
AR-15 type firearm with multiple uppers. Versatility.

870 Wingmaster 12ga. - I have a 1978 model, with shot or slug this gun covers many areas of shooting from calys to hunting large game.

Savage 110 .270Win w/mil-dot scope - I like this evolution of the '06 it is quick and flat and carries energy rather well. I use this for longer range work on varmints and should the laws here ever change deer. (That will never happen in IL.)

Howa 1500 .223 w/3-9x40 Nikon - Smooth, accurate, economical, and ammo is cheap and plentiful (usually). I use this for short range varmint work.

Ruger GP100 357Mag - Well built and reliable, choose .357 mag for heavy work or .38 to plink, practice or for light work.

Marlin 881 .22LR - I think this is one of Marlin's better guns. The simplicity of a bolt action with a tube magazine just works for me. I don't have a magazine protruding out the bottom to bang around and it holds 17 in the tube. The mechanism is simple and easy to maintain. Who doesn't need a good .22 around?

That's the short list. This is a fun thread, but I will never let it come down to being restricted to only 5 or 10 guns.

Remington 700, .30-06- Hunting Deers
Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 GA- home defense, hunting, trap
Savage bolt action .22 WMR- Vermin and targets
Benelli M1S90- Geese and trap

That's all I really use right now. I already have more guns than I need. I only really would need one rifle, shotgun, and small bore rifle to get anything done.

To a lot of guys having 10 guns doesn't sound all that spartan. The average gun owner has like 4 guns according to statistics and I see many posts on these forums from members who are young or just starting out in shooting sports and to them having 10 guns would be luxury.

But, to answer your question, I could get by with one gun. All I absolutely HAVE to own is a personal defense handgun. If I could step up to having two guns I would add a shotgun. It would do 99% of what I need a long gun to do. If I could afford the luxury of having three guns I would add a 22 pistol for pure recreational shooting.

This is what I would dhoose to keep if forced to pare down to bare bones.

Carry pistol. S&W M19. Magnums for serious and 38s for fun. This is all I absolutely need.

"Coach Gun" in 12 gauge. I don't hunt so this would do for any long gun needs by packing slug and buck loads.

If I could keep a purely fun gun this would do.

Camo Mossberg 835 Ultimag (or perhaps a Browning BPS) .... I'm a big time waterfowler

My Remington M7 .308 Winchester

Accurized, modified Ruger 10/22

TC Encore (frame counts for one gun) and as many barrels and stocks as I deem necessary. :neener:

Ruger LCP

Ruger LCR

My Taurus 4" M66 .357 magnum

My Ruger .45 Colt 4 5/8" blackhawk

My Ruger Old Army

My Cabela's Hawken Hunter Carbine

I'd sure miss a lot of my collection, though, especially my rimfires. I might have to sub 2 of my rimfire handguns for the black powder stuff. Maybe black powder doesn't count in this pole???? :D

I own 40 firearms split about half and half between handguns and long guns. I really don't want to get rid of any of 'em, though a few are expendable push came to shove. As a bird hunter, hunting shotguns are NECESSARY. I could hunt deer/hog without a rifle since I kinda prefer to use my Contender, anyway, but a guy needs a rifle.

SaxonPig is right, I would really only need 2-4 guns. I have a .357 Magnum, this would be great for defense against animals up to bear-size, or people. A .22 would be useful for hunting small game or a fun day of target practice. For long range I would pick the Mosin-Nagant. Powerful, long range, and probably the most reliable bolt-action rifle ever made. A good Remington 870 12 gauge would be sufficient for hunting and defense.

10? Awesome.

.22 pistol - Pick one
.22 rifle - Pick one
.44 Spl pistol - Snub (yes, as well as the .44 Mag)
.44 Mag pistol - 4" or 6" - Redhawk is my preference
.45 Colt pistol - 4" or 6" - Pick one
.38 pistol - 2", 2 1/2", or 3"
.357 pistol - 4" or 6" - yes, two .357's - Trooper Mk III is my preference
.308 bolt action rifle
.223 auto rifle

With one left over. A rifle of some sort.

Ask me tomorrow, and it might change, but not a lot. :)

This is what I would dhoose to keep if forced to pare down to bare bones.
Carry pistol. S&W M19. Magnums for serious and 38s for fun. This is all I absolutely need.

That or a Mdl 28 (more weight though) if I could only have one gun

Rounding out the field
870 or a Mod 12 both well built and ultra reliable
.357 lever (Marlin 1894 or Browning B-92) or Marlin 336 in 30-30
BL-22 light, accurate compact

I'm done.

The lightest I could get is one: a 12 guage 870. That will take care of men, deer, squirrels, and clay pigeons.

However, I would be able to hunt and have fun at the range with my Mossy M44 and the 870.

But I would have more fun than that with one of my Garands and the 870 and the Mossy.

I really could add all of mine into the list since I have less than 10 guns, but I think with those 3 I could do about everything I wanted to as far as my "...need for sport, hunting, and recreation."

Yeah for you guys who only need 3 or 4 thats up to you. Like I said, it's not an apocalypse collection where you squirrel away to the woods with what you can carry to a cabin. This is really more about shooting the guns you have and for me 10 guns is about the amount that you could have and in a month you could easily have shot all the guns in your collection. For me in the end my arsenal will be 20 guns or so at most. I love accurate c&r's with good stock sights and I'm sure I could think of more than 20 guns I'd like to own, but I'd probably rarely shoot them, maybe a couple times a year. Stuff like this gets you to think about what is important to you as a shooter and what you really want to focus on. Keep 'em coming, and more reasons why, not too many shotgun guys here. Thats what this is for, if you're a big sport shotgun guy have 7 shotguns and a hand gun and a couple rifles.

My rule is own no more than I can carry in a pinch, and sell anything I'm not using. After many years of refinement I've refined it to these:

-Speed Six
-CZ 452 ZKM with iron sights
-Ultimate levergun (which I have finally found, a custom big bore Win 94 in .450 Marlin)
-20 ga flintlock, probably in Fusil pattern [work in progress]
-The ultimate Mosin-Nagant [also still a work in progress]
-Possibly something else, maybe a battle rifle

1. CZ-452 .22LR. Shoots anything I feed it, so in times of tight ammo, when all I can find is Remington Thunderbolt, I can still shoot.
2. S&W Model 18 .22LR. For the same reason as above, it a handgun platform.
3. Ruger 10/22. Besides being the first gun I ever bought, which earns it a permanent spot, it satisfies my need to tinker.
4. S&W K-Frame .38 Special revolver. Take your pick on flavor. Stainless, blued, airweight, 4", 2". It doesn't matter which, they're all fun.
5. Remington 870 12g. Short barrel. I like the comfort of having this next to the bed for things that go bump in the night.
6. Custom Mauser in .257 Roberts A.I. Good lightweight hunting gun.
7. Custom Mauser in 6.5x55 Swede. Good medium hunting gun.
8. Custom Howa 1500 in .300 Wby. Magnum. Good heavy hunting gun.
9. U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1. Because everyone needs a Man's rifle...
10. 1911 in .45 ACP. Because they don't make a .46ACP?

This is essentially what I would keep if paired down due to finances or other reasons. I would have holes, but I would be happy with the above I imagine.
