I read best as: The most reliable, durable, combat-accurate, easy-to-maintain pistol...

The M9 has proven itself quite extensively in military trails.

If I was going to war I would likely want one of three pistols, a M9, a H&k Mk-23 USSOCOM, or a 1911. All three of this pistols have proven themselves in US Military tests.

Beyond that it's all about personal preference, I the trigger and adjustable grips on my P99c AS, but I like the overall feel and caliber of the USP Tactical .40 (my next pistol purchase).

Gonna have to go with the FN Hi Power. :)

Special mention goes to the Beretta 92FS and CZ-75, also. ;)

Hk P9S Combat. accurate as hell, butter-like trigger, concealable, and just an absolutely wonderful pistol to shoot.

Sig P210 first, Browning Hi-Power Second, and then the Glock. The Glock is still probably more durable and reliable than the first two but for pure art they have to beat the Glock.

Edit to add: There are many outstanding 9mm handguns on the market, and many I would love to own, but the three I listed to me represent my personal best choices. CZ, H&K, other Sigs, Beretta, S&W's, all amazingly accurate and reliable sidearms.

Homeland Security just ordered 65,000 Sigs with he DAK trigger, P226,P229,
P239.If I were going onto combat that's what I's be carring. I've owned 2 Sigs (P226 &P 239) They're not cheap but worth every dime.

John Browning himself said the Hi-Power was the best design he ever made! All else are wantabes!

But the CZs are a great "double"!

2nd place goes to Sig 226.

3rd is shared by the Star BM and the Firestar.

This is a tough one for me. I'll have to put it into 2 parts

Pre-1970 -

Walther P38 (Not post WWII P1s, the frame is of a poorer quality after 1945)
Makarov (East German version only - solid shooter, inexpensive)

Post 1970

Walther P88 (expensive as hell, but very very nice)

I was going to be the first to say Walther P-88, but I see modifiedbrowning and Ratzinger p38 beat me to it.

I've seen so many M9 Berettas go south with broken locking blocks that I'd hesitate to go downrange with one, and would just about sell a kidney to change it for an M11/Sig P-228 if if it were an option. The Mk 23 is pretty much a failure as a handgun -- rarely used, not much liked by its intended users.

1911, though, I'd feel well armed with.

John Browning himself said the Hi-Power was the best design he ever made! All else are wantabes!

I love P-35s, but Browning was dead for 8 or 9 years before the first finished pistol ever saw the light of day. It was quite a bit different from the prototypes that existed before Browning's death.

3914 ladysmith

Guess i've got to be different as i like the
3913/3914 series of pistols from S&W.I've
got a 3914 Ladysmith that has a great D/A
trigger and S/A isn't bad either. It has been
accurate with 115,124 and 147 grain loads,
my best is 2.5" for 8 shots ay 25 yards off
a bench. with milwall 147gr JHP's.

@HorseSoldier

I can confirm the unreliablity of the m9. When I was in the Army, I had one completely fail on me.

Sig P210.

No doubt about it. If 9mm pistols are women, it's Kate Beckinsale in her underwear.

In my humble opinion, the glock 17/19...both reliable and accurate and strong enough to handle the strongest loads for most hd, sd, target needs.

from my limited 9mm experience and for my $$, it's the Glock 17: relatively accurate, very reliable, cheap ($499 new, $350 used) with excellent manufacturer support and after-market gear choices.

re: whats the best 9mm auto ever made ?

IMHO the Sphinx 3000 Standard.
Cost: between $2k - $3k.

Glock is decent but by no means the best. Many people carry because it's cost effective being fairly cheap. Cost vs value.

I would say the best widely available is the Sig 226. Then Beretta 92FS.

SIG P210 is without a doubt the best made and most accurate pistol ever put in production. Every pistol is(was) testfired at the factory and the maximum spread allowed was 30mm (1,2") at 50 meters (55yds) for a full magazine. As far as I know, no custom 1911 maker can meet those standards even today (in terms of guaranteed accuracy).

However - it is not the best constructed pistol. The frames are prone to cracking and most are after years of shooting. Over here in Sweden they still dominate in competition but are now being rivaled by SIG X5, X6 and Pardini GT9.

The HK P9S is one of few factory made pistols made prior to 1995 that comes close to the P210 in terms of accuracy. Very reliable and with an interesting concept of the rolling lock mechanism.

If one sets accuracy aside, I think the Glock stands out in terms of allround features. Being a late 70s, early 80s design it ought to be in all museums of industrial design.

go shoot some guns and find out what the best pistol is. My vote goes to cz . I have a p-01 myself did not like the glock.
