What's the best 9mm or 40 cal carbine?

I don't know that you can call any gun "The Best" but... My recommendation would be either caliber in a Beretta CX4 storm.

I coulda said '9 mm/40 cal carbine', but everyone likes to think their opinion/gun is 'the best'. Esp around here ;) .

I don't know the best, but the upcoming CZ Scorpion EVO3 S1 is definitely on my radar.

I have had a marlin camp 9 since they came out, one of the first ones. A fun plinker but I don't think I have shot it since I built a suppressed 9mm AR. Never really used either for much more than having fun.

A 357mag carbine is a more usefull tool.

I had a hipoint 9mm. I cant say its the best, I have no basis for comparison. I suspect the Beretta would have a nicer fit and finish (it should at 2x the cost), but the HiPoint always went bang and was a lot of fun - more power than a .22, but not as pricey to shoot as centerfire rifle.

Hipoints are notoriously reliable and accurate, and at least to my eyes, are much more attractive than the Beretta, which is saying a lot since the Hipoints are so ugly!

I'm gonna be looking into the CZ Scorpion EVO3 S1 when it hits the market. I think an MP5 clone is about as good as it gets, or maybe an UMP in 9mm. That's if we're talking "best". But as a plinker I think the Beretta Storm is hard to beat. I've got a couple thousand rounds through mine with no issues. It's accurate, reliable, very short in OAL and a blast to shoot. It comes with a top rail and it's cheap to add bottom/side rails if you like. With a 650 lumen light, mount and a HOLOSUN RDS I still have only about $900 into mine and they're cheaper nowadays.

I'm totally happy with mine. The .40 version would be nice too but there aren't as many magazine options that I know of. At least no higher cap ones (I have some 30 round Beretta mags for my 9mm, they're factory and 100% reliable so far).

I have a Marlin Camp 9 and a Hi-point 9.
The Marlin is rarely shot but the Hi-point stays at my remote camp and gets used more-it is the only semi-auto long gun I leave there since it has the least monetary value of anything I have, larger than .22 of course.
Like others it has been flawless in operation, just looks like crap.

I'd be all over a Beretta CX4 in .45 if they ever decided to make it with a higher cap mag, and I don't mean ones that hang out 6"- the 15 round ones from my FNX-45 would be great!

+1 for the Hi Point. For $300 you can have a solid and dependable plinker that runs like a champ and eats every kind of ammo I have ever put through it. Like all HPs they are butt ugly, heavy and reliable.

I really like the 9mmP conversion kit for the Steyr AUG. It keeps the same ergonomics that I'm familiar with, is cheaper to shoot, and let's me shoot in areas where I can't shoot center fire rifles.

Plus, I already have a good stock of 9mmP ammo as that's what most all the pistols are chambered in.

I have a Hi-Point 9mm carbine and an AR 9mm.

The Hi-point gave me many years of good service before I built the AR, but the AR is more accurate, more comfortable to shoot, takes 32rnd magazines, and doesn't look like a toy.

With that said, the Hi-Point has been very reliable except for one issue. I shot it too much and the firing pin channel got worn down. Hi-Point fixed it quickly, apologized for my problems and tossed in a couple extra magazines for my troubles. It is a fun gun and accurate enough at 100 yards to reliably ding a 6" target consistently.

If I was doing it again, I would get this:
http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/18793/s/psa-16-9mm-1-10-melonite-rifle-kit-no-magazine/
Add a lower and a (metalform) magazine and you are good to go. It's even easier to build than a .223, since you don't need to worry about a gas system.

Mine cost in the area of $1000 to build, and I had to go to several vendors to get all the parts. It figures that PSA would just make a kit for $300+ less than I built for.

I own a few pistol caliber carbines;

Bushmaster Carbon-15 dedicated 9MM AR - it has a molded lower with mag well, so can't use it for anything else. Uses Colt pattern mags, AR ergonomics, accurate and lots of fun.

Beretta CX4 Storm in 9, very handy, fits great, uses Ber92 mags. Accurate, lots of fun, but trigger could be improved. Needs a threaded barrel too.

Beretta CX4 Storm in 40, very handy, fits great, uses Ber96 mags. Accurate, lots of fun, but trigger could be improved.

Just Right Carbine, originally in 40, uses Glock mags, sort of ARish, but not entirely.
Picked up the conversion kit for 9MM, but haven't installed it yet. Shoots well, fits well and easy to accessorize.

Special Weapons MP5/HK94 Clone - MP5 type platform with all the pros and cons. It is lots of fun as well.

Ruger PC9 carbine, uses Ruger P series mags. Accurate, light, handy, lots of fun as well. Sadly, out of production, but you can find them around for not too much $.

Uzi carbine, it's a semi auto Uzi -- not nearly as much fun as the FA versions.

Another thing I have is the 9MM Mech Tech kit for using the Glock lower, it's OK, but I don't like "giving up" my Glock lower.

So, to best answer to your question -- strictly MY OPINION -- They can all be fun, but the order of what makes it to the range the most often in descending order -- Beretta CX4, Bushmaster, MP5, Just Right.

If you can find one, The Kel-Tec Sub2000 is a lot of fun. I don't know about the best, but that's such a subjective question. Best at what?

A couple years ago I bought/sold several trying to find which one worked best for me.

Ultimately, an HK-94/MP5 licensed copy was the most satisfying/fun 9mm carbine.

This is after being disappointed with anything that was straight blowback operated, including the CX4, the 995TS, and a 9mm AR variant.

Another HiPoint fan here. 995ts. Not fancy. Not pretty. But always fires and puts rounds where you would expect. Rails to attach anything you want. Affordable. Although not as much now as they once were.

I sold mine. Not because I didnt like it or that it was a bad gun. I just got over PCC bug and rarely took it out of the safe anymore. Also, the fiance was afraid to shoot it because she viewed it as some sort of scary assault weapon.

I was interested in the Sub2k for a while too. In the end, the lack of availabilty and quite a few bad reviews based on reliability steered me away.

If HiPoint ever makes a carbine that takes full capacity (13+) pistol mags they would sell a boatload of them. I traded my HiPoint for a Marlin Camp 9, but I was very pleased with the HP.

I had a couple aftermarket 15 round mags for my HiPoint. Unsure of what brand they were. I had to make a modification to make the last round hold open work. After that, they were good mags with any FMJ ammo. They did choke on the one type of hollow points I tried. But in the mags' defense, they were hand loads developed for a different gun using a longer OAL than what is typical.

Wasnt a big deal to me. The gun was just a range toy. It's normal diet consisted of run of the mill 9mm FMJ's. Of which I do not recall a single malfuction of any kind.
