My wife just got me a used Ruger P89 (blue) for my birthday and I just cannot warm up to this gun, and seeing that WI. just passed CCW I am looking at getting a G19 because I shoot those very well. I am going to a gun show tomorrow in hopes of finding a 3rd Gen. G19, is the P89 a gun people would like to trade for? The P89 and how much extra for a G19? Even up? I don't want to get taken for a sucker at this show. any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have been seeing P89s going for around $350 and up depending on number of mags and extras that come with it. I dont know if its a decocker model or not (I actually think all P89s were but likely to be wrong) Also getting a trade such as that at a gun show may not be the best place to look but doesnt hurt. I would also suggest Armslist, you could post that you are look to trade but expect to add some cash for a Glock. You may be able to find a used Glock for around $400 if you look hard enough.

Myself I would make double sure the wife is ok with this. Trading or sell a gift from my wife could be the last gift she gives me! But everyone is different.

If trading to a dealer, you'll be lucky to get $200 credit for that Ruger. That's about what I got for my P94 (and it was good riddance).

Expect you'll need to make up $350 or so on a G19. Wish I could tell you something more pleasant, but fact is, the Rugers are not very desireable by most, generally viewed only as a good truck gun or budget HD gun. Personally, I wouldn't even buy one at $200.

I'm the sentimental type. Maybe save up for the G19 and treasure the Ruger, even if you didn't shoot it the best because, well, she gave it you.

However. back to the original topic, I'm not sure you will have much of a chance trading straight up. As mention, your best bet is to find a private transaction, or sell outright and then buy one.

Keep the Ruger. Your wife got it for you and you won't get that much for it anyway.

I like how a thread about the relative value of two guns quickly turns into a marital advice thread. Personally I have regretted selling or trading guns, but those were all guns that I had chosen to purchase in the first place.

Well like it or not tradeing or selling a firearm your wife just bought you would be really stupid for a relationship. How would you feel if you bought something for your wife that you thought was something nice and she dumped it. Besides It is built like a tank. maynot have the cool factor you want but it will work well for ever. Keep it even if it is only used for range time /play or just as a house gun.

It's one thing if he didn't like a gun he could get $500+ for. It's another thing when, at best, he'd get $200 trade-in value for it. It likely cost her more than that.

What made her get a P89 in the first place?

www.gunlistings.org is a good place to make trades and there are TONS of Glocks on that market. You should be able to get $300-$325 for it on there, a pretty fair price. You will occasionally have Glocks posted for $400-$425 fairly heavily used. So, you should be able to find a deal such as your Ruger + $100-$125 for a used Glock.

However, another thing to keep in mind is that the Glock 19s (compact) are going to be a little pricier than the Glock 17s (full-sized). Probably at least another $25-$50. The cheapest Glocks on the market are "service" Glock 22s. That's what I have and bought it for $400. J&G Sales is a good place to buy police trade-ins... sometimes as low as $329 + shipping/transfer fees.

Glocks don't lose too much value when heavily used. Worst case scenario, you only get $300 for your Ruger and can't find a good deal on a used Glock, so you spend $499 or so for a new Glock 19--you can find them in a few stores for that low.

One more thing... I tend to be pretty sentimental about gifts, so I may be biased. BUT, the Ruger P89 is a very underrated firearm (in other words, GREAT value!) and being a gift from my wife, I would certainly keep it. ;) That was a very sweet thing for her to do.

I have heard a lot of great things about the P89 and P95... to be honest it would be my auto of choice next to a 1911...

I wish my wife would buy me a gun... usually she just rolls her eyes when I am looking at guns and says "don't you have enough?" in which I reply "Don't you have enough hand bags?"...

Try selling it here on the classifieds. They work pretty well every time I've done it. There's a Ruger forum somwhere, too.

I'm going to go out on a limb here by bucking the trend and assuming that you may know better than I do what kind of marriage you two have. Thus, I have no relationship advice for you. Call me crazy but I've always been a bit of a rebel that way....

If my wife were to secretly buy a gun for me as a gift, I would keep it, even if it were a Glock, and "I HATE GLUCKS!!!!!" 50years from now it would probably still be 'Like New In Box' with the factory grease still on it.
Make Mama happy! Keep the Ruger, you won't be sorry for a number of reasons! "If Mama ain't happy, nobody's happy!"

I have a P89, and while it's not the prettiest thing, it goes bang everytime. It's one of the few guns that I have that has been 100% reliable. The other 2 are a ruger mk2 and a ruger mk3. I guess I can also add my SA-XD.

Dude your wife gave you a pistol for your birthday and you want to trade it off.
Think about what she will get you next year if you do.
And think about what you can ask for next year if you don't.
Don't be a fool!
IMHO this is a very good pistol.

You'll virtually always come out ahead selling a gun and then applying that money toward another versus trading it in on a new gun.

For what you will be given in trade at the gun show I would hang on to it and keep it as a night stand gun.I have one and it is a good gun.Save up and buy a G19.

Learn to love it or the couch

Edit: Also do not ever expect to get a firearm as a gift again.

Sorry for the marrital advice too, but don't get rid of it. I have never sold or traded a gun that I got as a gift from anyone, even my ancient JC Higgins 22 autoloading rifle that now just takes up room in my gun locker.

Turn the Ruger into a truck gun, desk gun, whatever. Shoot the heck out of it, teach her to shoot it if she doesn't already know how. It's only money. On your 50th anniversary, bring it out and take a walk in the park with her and think about the old days.

You'll probably find a place for it where it will be perfectly suited.

I too am waiting for my cc permit to arrive in the mail. About time WI joined the rest of the union, huh?

Keeping a gift you don't like because it was a gift is just plain silly.

If I bought someone something that they didn't particularly like, I'd want them to trade it in on something they did like. The spirit of the gift is still there, but the recipient is happier.

A gift is not an heirloom.

I say keep the Ruger. Whether its because its a gift from a thoughtful wife, or just plain practical reasons is your choice. Any dealer is going to beat you like a rented mule on a trade so you won't get much for the Ruger and will probably pay top dollar for the G-19. Never hurts to have an extra gun, save your money and find a Smoken deal on a new G-19 and keep the Ruger for a truck gun, nightstand, or BUG. And you keep the lady happy. :D
