What's the problem with MIM parts?

It's not that I hate S&W but that I hate what it is turning into. I mean what's next? A plastic cylinder latch? Howbout a MIM cylinder? ABS plastic grips with a faux wood finish?

Brilliant! Do you mind if I forward these suggestions to the S&W marketing department?:banghead:

P.S. I personally am hoping for a Model 29 "Hello Kitty" Special Collectors Edition with pink tassels hanging from the grip and glitter cast into the cylinder so that it glimmers when it rotates.

Sounds a lot like sasquatch, every has seen a broken MIM part but there are only like three known pictures of them.

Yep that's one of the ones on google images. As big a problem as these horrible parts are I figured there would be at least four or five pictures.

Here is a S&W prototype made outa MIM:

Just kidding ;)

Well said Prosser!! Best explanation I've seen here of why some of us - those who have experienced fine reliable, well built firearms - don't like MIM parts and/or despise current production S&W's. AMEN!! :)

I wouldn't say Taurus is superior to current production S&W's, I'd say they are the same quality! Taurus is priced more realistically for what you are getting.

Hypothetically, suppose I have access to a vertical machining center.

Does anyone think there's a market for milled barstock hammers, triggers, and lockwork for Smith & Wesson revolvers?

I don't know of anyone that makes parts besides S&W.

You would do us all a great favor, because then S&@ would run you out of business, either selling forged parts for near free, or, offering them as a warranty option. I don't know how Philanthropic you are, but it would be a great service to the gun industry.

Randy Lee at Apex Tactical has re-engineered the S&W hammer and is designed to replace the MIM hammer. He offers a drop-in kit for J-frames, and tells me kits for K-, L-, and N-frames ought to be available soon. Randy's doing quite well, and Apex-tuned guns are said to be top notch.

Power Custom makes a forged trigger kit, too.

I'd pay it. Consider people are paying that much for 1911 drop-in kits.

Good to hear, 918v. The parts for the conversion will only cost you $282.10 (below). Add in another $100 or so for a 'smith to fit the trigger/hammer/sear. Maybe throw in some lighter springs and you're still under $400.

Thanks for volunteering. We're looking forward to your range report.

Power Custom Trigger kit: $109
Apex Hammer: $142
Apex Firing Pin: $15
Sear: $8
Sear/stirrup/hand spring pin: $1.50
Stirrup: $5
Bolt plunger/Sear spring: $1.60

The made up "facts" just keep coming.

This thread is a lot of crap and opinions. I can say I did learn something though about MIM parts, hell they work fine for me.

Does Dan Wesson use MIM? BFR?
Freedom Arms?

After you add 400 dollars to the price tag off these S&@'s, you have negative value...And thank you Mr. Jones for the compliment.

I put a LOT of thought into my 'opinions'.

In fact, they are theories, not opinions.

Touche, 918v.

Now that's a fact, Prosser:D

That would make it a Ruger, wouldn't it? Or at least the same as in strength and quality.... ;)

"What is the problem with MIM parts?"

John M. Browning didn't invent them.

Almond, you obviously aren't paying attention.

You should be very dissatisfied with whatever it is that you have and have been shooting. You certainly can't have been having any fun.

Now get out there and start complaining!:)

I own two Smith & Wesson revolvers of recent vintage. Both are far better than the last S&W I owned, which was a product of the bad old late Bangor Punta days. The two S&Ws (a Model 60 with a 3-inch barrel and a Model 637 Airweight) had good triggers right out of the box, shot well from the beginning and have continued to be fine handguns.

I think the lock is unsightly but, other than that, it doesn't bother me. Had accidental engagement been a real problem, I have a feeling S&W would have made changes in the design rather than face a huge volume of warranty work.

If you prefer the older revolvers; go in peace and God be with you. But accept the fact that other people, whose opinions are equally valid, are comfortable with the modern product.

Do you have any pics of Rugers breaking in half?
