It is just marketing.
Take a popular theme and wear it completely out to the absurd expression.
We're a little late to the party, but some folks are trying to make a buck while having a few yuks.
We've replaced shooting at silhouet targets with something a little more pop culture is all.
Is it a negative? Is plinking cans and plastic bottles somehow more positive than punching paper with zombie cartoons in place of the standard silhouette?
C'mon, are we that stuffy and overly serious?

exactly. People have been into Cowboys and Indaian for 100 years atleast and befor that kids pretended to shoot red coats. Dont forget Davy Crocket, cops and robbers. THe only reason why we dont have Humans vs aliens is we havent had a real confrontation with them as much as we havent with zombies however Zombies seem more relevant and fathamable to most humans.

I have seen people playing games with padding on and shooting each other with paintballs......that seems worse than shooting an infected person.

That, and zombies follow a fairly narrow line of criteria. You have dumb or smart zombies, fast or slow zombies...but in the end, they're all undead humans.

Aliens, on the other hand, can be the grays, little green men, romulans, wookies, andalites, or anything from a number of different books/movies/TV shows. If I say "zombie" you probably picture a shambling humanoid. If I say "alien", who knows what you're picturing. Is it a single alien who comes in peace, or a huge mothership that's going to destroy everything?
