Hey all...I have a question regarding the Sig Sauer pistols. I was interested in purchasing a Sig Pro in .40 caliber...I have heard numerous people talking about the high quality of Sigs in general (good accuracy, reliability, durability, decent trigger out of the box). I called the local shooting range in order to see if they had the Sig Pro for rent so that I could shoot it before I buy it. I was surprised to hear that they carry all major manufacturers and makes of pistols except for Sigs. I asked why, and he claimed that they break easily...He said many Sigs had problems and wasn't cost effective for them to rent out. Is he just talking out of his A$$ to rent/sell a pistol they do carry, or is there some truth behind his statements?

Also, I have heard some people claim that the line of Sig 2022's are not of original "Sig Quality." I know they are relatively cheaper, but does some of it have to do with experienced Sig shooters who are used to the "feel" of the older Sigs? Thanks in advance for your input.

Nothing wrong with SIG's as far as I'm concerned. Very good, very accurate and dependable firearms. I have 3 CPO's and all have been top of the line in all respects. (2-229's and a 220)

I understand that a dealer has to be a 'SIG STOCKING DEALER' to be able to handle SIG's. Maybe he was not a SIG dealer.

I like the way the SIG made and the way it felt but the P229 I had was mis-feeding SOB so I ended up trading it off on an H&K. I have been told that the SIG chamber is very tight tolerance and I believe it because I saw very little expansion. I wish it would have fed reliably like my H&K or Beretta, I wouldn't have gotten rid of it. Regarding what the range told you about breaking, I think is BS because the gun is well built.

...

Nothing is wrong with Sigs, quite the opposite IMO. Also, I would think most ranges that don't offer them to rent may be that used ones (cheap buys) are few and far in between.

As they keep going up in cost new each year, which makes well kept, quality Sigs hold a high resale value, and renters can have bad habits, no habits, cheap reloads, etc., after all, it's not their gun if they drop it, etc.

Kinda like driving a Porsche and not adding oil except for when the low oil light won't go off, or changing the oil only after some 10,000 miles, or more, in between oil changes on a car that cost a lot!!, and gives ya high performance, in the blink of an eye, when taken care of like the Race car it is.

Maybe I should drive a bit farther to try out the Sig...I was wondering with the DA/SA version, does it operate similar to the HK USP? I like the decocker w/ safety function.

AJ,

I'm selling a Sig Pro 2022 in the Handgun market forum right now. It is a great gun. But it doesn't fit my hand and I don't particularly care for the .357sig round.

However, there is no questioning the quality of the gun. The quality of the Sig Pro is fantastic.

I think it is just that specific range doesn't carry them. Many of the rental ranges carry a fairly limited variety of handguns. The main one in the Portland area just carries Glocks, XD, and catchall assortment of a few S&W, Taurus, and Ruger revolvers. Basically the cheapest, fairly sturdy guns they can scrounge up.

Those guns get heavy use and are not kept in the best shape; pretty beat up as a matter of fact. Maybe cleaned every couple of months "whether they need it or not".

I don't think you'll find many premium models at most rental ranges. I have not seen Kimbers or SIGs, for example. Nor anything too exotic. You might find a Beretta 92, rattley old 1911 (not likely), or a S&W 5906, etc.

SIGs are great and generally very reliable. I had a P229 than ran great and now have a used P245 that doesn't ask for anything and just keeps pumping out bullets. I love Glocks for their no-nonsense reliability, but the SIG is that plus a joy to hold in the hand (ok, fondle!). German engineering beauty.

Results of a 10,000 rd. shooting from a Sig P220

There's an artical,[ either " Shooting Times " or Guns & Ammo " ],about several guys at a shooting session with a Sig P220,and 10,000 rounds of Black Hills 230 gm. FMJ Hardball .45 ammo..

The results were all 10,000 rounds were fired.Every 3,000 or 4,000 rounds the gun was cleaned and oiled. There was a total of JUST 5 failures with the bullets and the pistol.A few were related to the Magazines and a few with faulty primers, and one the bullet was a "Fluke",it was measured to be too big !

The only thing that went wrong with the pistol itself was a broken return hammer spring. It just plan wore-out.

Now the barrel is an amazing story !

The pistol was cleaned, then the barrel and the bullet grouping was measured in relation to first rounds fired when the pistol shooting first started.
The freakin' pistol was JUST AS ACCURATE after the 10,000 rounds as of the very beginning !

And there was absolutely no visable ware-and-tare on the rifleing of the barrel !:)

I just happen to own a Sig P200 st,and i'm madly,madly in love with it !
She has a stout recoil, and i pity the fool who gets whacked with a Doubletap
Gold Dot Hollow Point if they try to harm my family and i .

Anyway...where was i....OH YEAH !
The question is not " What's wrong with Sigs " ?
But " What's wrong with ALL OTHER pistols that ARE NOT Sigs " !?!? :D :D

If I am wrong, I'm sure someone will be along to correct me later.

If I understand correctly one of our Special Operations outfits in Coranado, who get to play around with firearms a lot, are issued Sigs.

Its kinda doubtful that these folks would chose an inferior product.

salty.

sigs are very high quality, handguns IMO. i love it when dealers say stuff like that, alot of them only talk bad about a certain brand for the mere reason that they don't carry them and they want to sell you something they do carry. if the are honest with you and tell you how great that sigs really are, you will ask if they have any. and you will have to go somewhere else, and therefore they lose business.

get a sig and you will be very happy. they are great handguns a deserve every bit of the hioe they get!

Hey ajl2121 !

Why settle for a .40 cal. when you can shoot with the Big Boys !:D
Come on over to the Sig P220 club.
Shoot one,then make-up-yor-mind !
I'll bet a week's wages that you'll buy the P220 .45 cal.,and you'll never -look-back,and you'll never regret it !;) ;) ;) :D

I am the Sigdude !

I would opt for a P220...Was comparing the P220 to the USP .45F...I really would like a pistol that can have at least 10 rounds...In CA, so 10 rounds would be the max. Hey Salty Dog...Do you have anything to do with the "Salty Dog" bar in Orange County???

one last note.....

When i bought my baby Sig P200,i asked the gun dealer,[ whom i've purchased several guns from throughout the years ], " Hey ! B.T.W. Dan ! If you had to go into combat...say the ghetto against some crack-head zombies...which,out of all the pistols here, would you choose to carry ? "

Dan looked at me and just held my pistol high into the air. Then he said, "The rest of these pistols here are just junky and clunky. And if you can't get the job done with 8 rounds of .45 then YOU DESERVE TO DIE !!! " :p

I guess that should about sum-it-all-up !

The Sidude has spoken.

aj,

The sigpro is not like the HK, it has the decocker, but no additional manual safety. I have a 2022 in .40, and I love it. More accurate than I am and is nearly identical in size to my P245(1/2 in. longer in the grip).

I shot a SIG at my local range that has about 30k rounds through it. It still made one hole groups.

Your range man is full of it.

There are a lot of good pistol brands, and SIG is one of them.

Not to talk down, but if you can in any way swing the $ for a P series Sig, you will be much happier with the quality and performance. In my opinion the Pro series don't hold a candle to the "normal" Sigs. And your dealer is full of it!

The only thing wrong with Sigs is the inflated price. A CZ75 is just as reliable and hundreds of bucks less. But if you like Sigs, they can't be beat quality wise.

Nothing wrong with SIGs, other than the fact that they have fugly rails on all the new ones. I had a P239 and currently have a P225. I also had a SIG Pro 2340 (proprietary rail) in .357 SIG. Smooth pistol, laser accurate and probably the best DA trigger of ANY SIG I tried. It's less expensive, but definetelly not cheap.
Sounds like your dealer is just trying to sell you something else.

I have 5 SIG's and they are all fantastic.Do a search here for opinions on the Pro and other than the grip not being everyone's cup of tea, they are almost faultless on a functional level. They are absolutely every bit as accurate as a "classic" SIG and they DO have the best trigger of the breed.I think there was some snobbery that SIG built a pistol that was just as good for less money and some SIGsnobs got carried away with that but the Pro is not only one of the best polymer framed autos,it's one of the nicest shooting service pistols out there _period_.

I'm not a brand snob - I carry a Glock 19 daily and use 1911's and S&W wheelguns for games - and will tell you that SIG's are outstanding firearms. They are expensive new but there are deals to be had CPO and police trade-in.

In short, that dealer either had a rare bad experience or is experiencing rectal-cranial inversion.

I've got six Sigs and I haven't had any problems with any of them. I don't have any Sig Pros so I can't speak for them. I have some older ones (1994)and some new ones - P226 PME (poor mans Equinox :p ) Military has the M11 P228.
If Sigs sucked so bad, I don't think the Military and countless numbers of police forces, Homeland security, Coast Guard, and most of all JACK BAUER would use them. Check the Sig Club (in my signature) and ask around there.
I'd find another range.

Why would a range rent Sigs, when they can buy 2 Glocks for the less money, make double the rentals, and not worry about having to put much time into maintenance. Don't get me wrong, I'm definately not a Glock lover. I had one and sold it. I just didn't like the ergonomics.

I have 3 Sigs and love everyone of them. I think they're some of the best money can buy. I think it's all about the bottom line and what the range will make more money off of. The people at the range telling you they don't rent them because they break is just a bunch of BS.

I do have to agree that if you can swing the extra money, go with a "P" over the Pro. You won't regret speding the extra money in the long run. You can get a P226 or P229 CPO for $450-500.
