Please give me the history of this. I have searched and can't the answer. How could such a supposedly gun friendly state lose this fundamental gun right?
I don't know how detailed you want but Texas joined the CSA and was then defeated in the American Civil War. Federal troops kept quasi-order as Jackson appointed a governor but political violence by returning Confederates left things unsettled.
In 1874 the Democrats regained control of Texas and passed a statute against freedmen carrying weapons. In 1876 a new Constitution was enacted which allowed the legislature to regulate the carrying of arms to keep the freedmen in check, the carrying of handguns was prohibited under most circumstances.
In 1996 Texas finally reformed this relic of Jim Crow.
