Armymp-another invite to come on down to Texas. Guns and gun owners are very welcomed here. A tip of the hat to you for serving, as well as to your wife for supporting you.

A number of reasons why I moved here-great vistas out west, the piney woods to the east, the gulf, but most of all, the people. Nobody in the 20+ years I have been lived here has ever called me a baby killer.

In contrast to the way you have been sometimes treated, let me tell you about the welcome my son received when he came home on his mid tour. He landed at DFW, and told me that it was hard to get through the airport because of all the well wishers gladhanding him, shoving food in his hand of every kind and people clapping their applause.

I asked him if he wanted to get something to eat-dumb question, this boy was nearly 12 pounds at birth and hasn't lost an ounce since! We went to his favorite breakfast place and he told the waitress to make him an omelette with all the pork products they could possibly stuff in it, and a bottle of real ketchup. (who in the world came up with that powdered stuff ought to have to eat it!) I swear the first bite he took, his eyes rolled back into his head!

We finished our meal and were enjoying a cup of joe when an elderly lady came over to our table, thanked him for his service and snatched the check off the table and said this one was on her and her husband-likely a WWII vet. I started to protest, saying if anything, we should be buying theirs. That old fella told me to "respect your elders", winked, and headed for the cashier.

The kid wanted to pick up some shampoo and other personal items so we went to the local drug store-the manager came over to the checkout stand, rang it up as a no sale and thanked him.

We went to the pistol range, and the lady would not take his money-said it was on her.

Bottom line? Texas is a wonderful place-lots of work to be had, people are respectful of others to a large degree, especially in the smaller towns. Great places to go shooting, hunting and fishing. Wonder places to raise the little people. And we have shiner bock!

Sheep don't like shepherd dogs. They're scary to a sheep, and remind them of wolves.

When the wolves come around though, it's the shepherd dogs who drive them away and defend the flock.

And the next day, the sheep still don't like the shepherd dog because they're scary and remind them of wolves. It's all sheep can understand.

Ignore stupidity...

You are a hero in my book. Thanks for your service, glad you're home safe.

When our plane landed in SFO.....

from Thailand in '68, several of us witnessed a hippie couple harassing some army types in front of us. We waited a bit and saw the guy go into the john. We followed and while one stood lookout, the hippie ended up singing in the suprano section of the choir. We just could not allow further diluting of the gene pool........chris3

armymp:

Thanks are due both to you and your family for your service. I am a bit to the left of most folks here, and I will tell you that what folks are doing is outright shameful.

Now to the winner in the contest of "What i did on summer vacation in...., 1968 Edition ":

We followed and while one stood lookout, the hippie ended up singing in the suprano section of the choir. We just could not allow further diluting of the gene pool........chris3

Huh? You castrated a feller for insulting someone...wow...I don't even know where to begin on that one. talk about a punishment not fitting the crime.

Remind me to stay off your lawn, chris3. Following your logic, I fear i would end up with my left glute shaved off.

sheesh.

It is truly sad that you have gone through that.

This is for ALL of you who have served.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL! AND GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILIES FOR THE SACRIFICES MADE, AND THE TIME THEY HAVE WAITED FOR YOUR RETURN.

Welcome back armymp119 and thank you !

I'm former Navy and I served in the 70's when one would have thought all that "baby killer" crap had ended. Like dpesec, BigRobT, and Scottf I've met my share of idiots out there.

After Basic in Waukegan, and "A" school in Port Huneme, I came home for a few weeks feeling really proud of myself. Showed up at a girlfiend's house wearing my dress blues and the first thing she said was "How many children did you kill today?" :confused: She slammed the door, I walked away dumbstruck, got a similar welcome from a couple of my "buddies" later. :fire:

Went to my first duty station a week early, never saw any of those idiots again. Good riddance. :p

Hold your head high, be proud of what you have done. You had the moral strength and personal conviction to serve.

You are among friends here. I owe you a beer.

When Name-Calling Hits Home

Your story smells like fish to me. I think it's a fictitious episode made up for some unknown reason, probably just to stir up the predictable responses that showed up in this string. Every swinging dick who's complained about the war in Iraq has bent over backwards to point out that it's the policy--not the soldier-- that he's against. Sorry, but your posting sounds like a load of crap.
I think a lot of the same type of stories from the Vietnam era were also a load of the same stuff. I was one of the hairy types protesting the war, as were most of my friends. We were registered with the draft and appalled by the scenes on the evening news. None of us bore any ill will toward the poor slobs fighting and dying in the jungle. Our feeling was, "There but for the grace of God, (and a student deferment) ...."

Mistreating a veteran of any conflict, and especially someone fresh from a war zone is despicable. If someone is idiotic enough to do this, well, I'm sure your momma taught you better than to pick on half wits and simpletons. Just think how bad it must suck to be them.

Jane Fonda disguised as Googol.:rolleyes:

Thank you for your service, you're a hero to me and mine. You've just come back from a war and I'm sure you've seen some pretty heart-wrenching views.
Don't let the foulness and lack of appreciation of a few blind you to the thankfulness of the many millions who count our blessings for people like you.

Cuda, best let that one be. There is no way to address that post without resorting to the same unacceptable tactic used in said post.

P.S. Cool user name. Make mine a 1970 AAR in black with a silver strobe.

I think it's a shame that the original poster was subjected to verbal insults, and even had his vehicle defaced. And quite frankly, I think it's almost as shameful that many of the replies on this thread resort to the exact same sort of name calling that you're all pretending to be appalled by. You can't have it both ways. Name-calling is bush league, 3rd grade behavior -- period.

P.S. Cool user name. Make mine a 1970 AAR in black with a silver strobe.

Thanks.
If only I had the money.. Got a 64 Barracuda in the garage that I'm restoring. V8, 4 Speed, totally original.. Fun evening work.

Army, God Bless you

and all our vets who have served our country. Please do not let a few who are not thinking spoil your welcome home. Your countrymen are proud of you. I read the blogs from those who are over there and sometimes my heart swells with such pride it is hard to breath. WELCOME HOME!

armymp119

I am a Vietnam combat vet and know first hand what you are going through. It will pass with time.
Unlike some here I believe this has to be done. It can be done now and mostly on foreign soil or later and mostly here in the good Ole USA. I prefer the former.

Tom in TN:banghead:

Thank you and Welcome Home.

Thanks for serving. Former USN, NMCB-23.
You know you're doing right, most of America knows it. Some support the war, some don't, but most support our troops. For those who don't, an old Senior Chief told me an important word. Four letters, starts with "f", ends with "m". I'll PM you the other two to keep this rated G.

ArmyMP:

Though not technically a combat vet, I walked a bit on the wild side, ROK/DMZ, 1978-1979.

As an Army vet, and the father of a Marine combat vet (Fallujah, 2005), know that there are a LOT more people who appreciate your service, than there are who don't have a clue. If you get depressed or down in any way, just look around. You will no doubt find some place--business, government building, or maybe your own home--and see Old Glory waving. You did your part to keep it there.

For V4Vendetta:

I suppose that's worthless though.

No, it's not worthless. Saying thanks to any veteran--especially a combat vet--is worth more than you imagine. Thank you, and God bless. :)

Armymp, welcome home and God bless you and your wife for your service and sacrifice. Rest assured that you are highly regarded by myself and others. PM me here when ever you are ever in the Detroit area, and dinner is on me. Semper Fi.

name calling

I blame the news agencies. We have people who pay lip servive to our military and then vote to cut funding. Don't let it get to you. The same thing occurred during the war of independance and every conflict since. YOU KNOW you did the right thing. So many of our citizens don't have the ability to think. Their minds are made up and they don't want to be confused with truth. YOU KNOW you did right. I KNOW you did right. We do right because it is the right thing to do. I WILL continue to do right. I DO PITY those non thinking people. I don't hate them. I just wish they would wake up. Do right and ignore the nay sayers.

Thank you for your service.

Take care and GOD bless.

Tom

Thank You!

armymp: Thank you for your service!

I have soom experience with what you experienced and some times there is justice. I applied for a jobs after I left the service and in some cases it was not pleasant. At one company the person who interview me was fired after the VA checked out how that person treated returning vets. It made me feel good that he got what he deserved, but it put him out of work and made him a competitor for other jobs I was after.

Armymp19,

I'm sorry you had to put up with such trash. I commend you for your honor and courage. My Daughter served her four years, then enlisted with the Guard and Reserve, in turn for educational grants. She served in Afghanistan, and Korea. Your story angered me so much, I started a thread involving "nukes" which is now locked. I have always been on the hot tempered side, and hope I can control myself from knocking one of these idiots on their a$$, if such comments are made in my presence. Hopefully, I won't.

My son is 17, and is considering joining the reserve, while going to college and working part time. I wounder if any of these idiots will let there children serve. I can understand if some people do not agree with the war. Abusing, and offending our fine men and women who serve our country is disgraceful.

I sincerely apologize to everyone for that "Iran wants nukes" thread.

Tommy (aka Private Thomas Atkins, Infantry)

By Rudyard Kipling. He knew why we serve, in spite of the treatment we get from some folks.

Tommy

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

I know from personal experience that it's hard to comprehend why anyone would give up time, money, comfort, the closeness of family and friends, and risk their life (anyone in uniform has taken that risk - it's just a matter of where your Personnel Section wants you to take it) to ensure that jackasses like the ones you ran into never have to find out what it would be like if their freedom was not defended.

You have earned the right to stand tall and stand proud. Thank you, from one vet to another.

stay safe.

I have never served in the armed forces though my father is retired Army. I want to thank all of those who are here who have served for helping keep us free. I have never understood people who abuse solders for being solders and burn the flag. Do thay not realize that they are burning the flag of the only country in the world that gives you the right to do so? and that is abusing our solders they are abusing the fighting arm that allows them to keep those rights that they are abusing.

Thank you to all veterens and active military. We apriciate all you do.
