I'm looking to SBS a Wingmaster I picked up not too long ago. Before I get the stamp I want to find a source for factory 870 14" barrels that I can go to once the paper work returns and I can buy one. Is this something I can get direct from Remington with a copy of the stamp or are there distributors (will I need to use a transfer dealer)?

Thanks!

That is indeed one possibility. However I was hoping someone could tell me if they've done this in the past before I go hunting for the rare person on Remington's CS staff that would take a civilian NFA question seriously.

I SBSed an 870 awhile back and couldn't find any short barrels for sale. I ended up just having the factory 18" barrel cut and a new bead sight put on. If you really want a factory barrel, I doubt Remington would deal with you directly on NFA stuff, but you might be able to have an SOT order it for you.

I called Remington yesterday and they were very helpful. They stated that their factory 14" barrels are a 'restricted' part and are generally used as a 'repair part' for existing 14" models that require new barrels. They suggested contacting a law enforcement distributor.

Looks like I'll have to cut down a barrel once I get my ATF stamp.

I've got a 870P Max with a +2 extension but it's a bit bulky for a close quarters weapon. I'd like to run a defensive shotgun with a standard tube and given that I'm doing that I thought I'd shorten the barrel to just past the mag tube for handiness' sake. It will be a summer project, I'll probably send it out for engraving and send the Form 1 to the ATF sometime in the next couple months.

I have one with a 14" barrel, which is about flush with a +1 magazine extension. If you take it down to 12.5" it should be about flush with the standard magazine.

Occasionally, 14" 870 barrels turn up on E-Bay, of all places. You might also try looking on gunbroker.

I have seen these barrels from time to time, and they were advertised as being take-offs from police shotguns. I have no idea whether these were true factory 14" barrels, or cut down barrels.

Caveat emptor!

Yep, any shorter and you'll need to cut the mag tube. Here's my 12.5" SBS'ed 870.

I've heard this. Trouble is I don't want to buy one before I have my stamp ('constructive possession') and I don't really want to get a stamp unless I know I have a source. Sort of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

With my luck I'll probably wind up getting the stamp, cut down a barrel and then see a NIB factory 14" Rem barrel on Ebay the next day!
