Which 1911?

I found the spent casing from the test firing in the box. It was sealed in a small envelope. Looks like it is going to dent casings. At least the test fired one is dented at the mouth pretty good. As long as it feeds and ejects OK then I can live with that. I can't wait to get a chance to shoot it.

i have been wanting a 1911 for years and found someone willing to work with me and he has a Ruger SR1911 and we went out to shoot it and i was really impressed.

i have a Springfield XDm45 and i love the feel of the pistol in my hand but it has a pretty harsh recoil/kickup and i shot the SR and it was very comfortable in my hand with the thinner frame, the recoil was not bad at all but the accuracy was dead on!

after the first mag i was hooked and wanted it right then!

well i got my new baby today but wasn't really happy with the guy i bought it from even tho he is a nice guy. we went to the range around three weeks ago so i could shoot it and that's when i fell in love with it and we got together again today cause i wanted to look and see if it had that breech step problem i read about but it was all good!

but when i tore the pistol down it was filthy!! i could not believe a gun lover and a former gun store employee would treat a gun that way? he said he cleaned it after the first time i shot it but maybe he just ran a cloth through the barrel to clean out powder but it was horrible.

but i still wanted the gun so i paid him and exchanged bills of sale and headed out and tore it down when i got home and the barrel is soaking awhile.

he told me how to avoid the 'idiot mark' so that was a plus, but i wanted to see if you guys have more tips like that one? but i'm just wondering what my first mod might be? i want to put on a reflex red dot but the stock sights are so damn accurate its unreal.

Just shoot it for a few weeks. If it's working for you you might not really want to mod an already good gun!

Northerner66: dont worry about it being "filthy". 1911's will tolerate a LOT of dirt and keep on shooting. It didn't hurt the gun one bit. Plenty of info on how to lube, mainly the rails with light grease, and a drop of oil down the hammer and a few other spots.

I think you did good on the Ruger. I have them both (well the R1 is blued and the Ruger is a CMD) and I like the Ruger better, all things considered. Both are great shooters, the Ruger just has those features I like in a 1911 (beavertail, extended safety, long trigger).

My SR1911 CMD did come with a pretty tight extractor, and didn't like to lock-back on the 8 round mags until I tweaked it. Once that was done it has run everything I've thrown at it like clockwork.

I haven't noticed my SR1911 denting brass any, however. You'll have to let us know when you get some range time.

Not sure if it's one of the good 1911's but a while back I splurged and bought myself a Wilson Combat KZ45. For some reason they quit making them. It uses special flush fitting ten round magazines. It hasn't given me any problems though.

A .22 conversion would be nice but I still can't find any ammo for it. Got a Marlin 60 that hasn't been shot in quite a while. I pretty much gave up looking for it though.

Maybe I missed it, but why limit the choice to Ruger or Remington? Neither one has much experience making 1911's.

I could have thrown RIA, Para, etc.. in there but kind of hard to find a stainless steel 1911 that's brand new in the box for $575 that is from a trusted firearm manufacturer. Those were my choices. Ruger stands by their products so no worries. I think I came out good on the deal. My next one will probably be a Springfield EMP or a Kimber Solo. I'm just in the dreaming stage for that though. Gotta save my pennies.

Glad you like the Ruger. They do have great customer service. I recently got the R-1 enhanced, however, and am very pleased with it. It was very lightly used, so the price was right. Have already won two matches at the local gun club with it. I'd like to shoot it next to a Ruger and see how they compare...

There's a thread here on filing a notch in the slide stop so you don't make the idiot mark on the frame. Should be able to find it on a quick search. Happy shooting!

I use a piece of shim stock to prevent the idiot mark. Someone actually markets a tool that's just a piece of shim stock with a hole punched into it that fits over the mag release. I had a Springfield GI many years ago so I learned the hard way like most do.

I got a price today from my local gun shop for the Commander length Ruger 1911. I'm going to order it tomorrow since the price was right IMO. He told me $650 OTD.

I'm going to start a thread asking about the commander length or full 5" length 1911.

Remington R1 or Ruger SR? Both in stainless and about the same price. I plan to buy one in the next couple of days as a Christmas present to me. My wife says I'm selfish but hey it's a 1911. I've heard good and bad about both.
ruger hands down

remington is recalling these guns by the ton

I did that to all my 1911's. Think of 1911 forums, type "Idot mark" in the search engines. You'll find it. It a no loss solution and you will never need any special tools again. You may find it typing that into google; "1911 idiot marks".

Nice choice on the Ruger. My first and only 1911 so far is a Ruger, full size. Still wish I had gotten a commander but I got a great deal on this one barely used with Davidson Warranty and as it turned out it was dud and Davidson's replaced it with an excellent one.

As for a conversion kit I bought one on Monday so hopefully soon I'll know how it works. My kid wants to shoot more pistols lately so I bought it as a cheaper alternative to a whole new gun. I went with a GSG kit from Palmetto State Armory as they have it on sale right now for $120. Eventually I think I'll buy a bare frame and build it from the ground up as a learning project so that that gun has a dedicated lower. No hurry though.

I have several rugers and have had great luck with all... over the years have had minimal experience with service department but because of them I'll never hesitate to buy another one. There service is second to none. I actually told them it was not really thier fault , its wear... ( i hammered this gun) they emailed a fedx label and replaced parts needed to bring gun back to like new! I have since bought a sr9, redhawk & blackhawk combo. Long story short, I vote Ruger.

I have an AA 22 conversion kit and try as I might the slide stop will not seat as the slide is just a tad short of allowing the stop to seat. I have a S&W 1911 that it goes on with out a hitch. Granted I've not put a lot of rounds thru the Ruger maybe after a few hundred rounds things will smooth out and the kit will fit.
