I had to go with the first, and that one only. The others never really got to me.

However, had there been one on "inexpensive vs expensive carry weapons" (the old "what's your life worth?" cliche), that's where I would have started.

I would categorize them as more like being annoying than anything else. Should have probably included "1911 vs. everything else out there", "hammer fired vs. striker fired", and "metal guns vs. polymer guns".

The use of WD40 as a lubricant.
Tight tolerances.
Low penetration ammo for home defense.

My number one hated thread type is "You need to carry a gun with more capacity because of X, Y, and Z. You have to be prepared at all times to fend off an entire gang of armed assailants." "If you think your little five shot snub nosed revolver is enough for today's big bad world, you're kidding yourself."

We all live in different places with different circumstances. We all need to carry what makes us the most comfortable. If that's a 30 round magazine stuffed into a Glock, fine. If it's a two shot derringer, fine.

But also:

Glock vs everything else.
HK's are too expensive bitching threads
S&W internal locks are the devil's work and will result in the apocalypse
How much is this worth? Look on gunbroker for common guns!!!!!!

Buy what you like. Shoot what you like. There is no "best", there is only "best for you."

I don't even click on any of those topics. That stuff is played out and not worth the brain activity. Every Internet forum has these types of topics. I'm a DE razor enthusiast; you'll find just as many of these topics on those forums as well. Not worth the aggravation to even read.

I picked "vilifying all liberals" option. All those threads simply are people repeating what they heard on talk radio or read in American Rifleman, nothing new or interesting. Let's just talk about guns, ammo, and gear man!

Vilifying all liberals . . . yep, not all are anti gun. The liberals that are on the fence about guns or even the liberals that are pro-gun aren't likely to want to stay around a place that treats them all as idiots.

It's the same when I read a news story on a website that is a liberal haven. The hardcore liberals all vilify conservatives, and those liberals make the exact same knee jerk comments about conservatives that many conservatives make towards liberals. There is no thinking involved in those comments, and due to that, all it does is evoke emotional response from both sides.

The 45 v 9mm argument aggravates me the most simply because of the tendency to dip into the shallow end of the ad hom pool. All too often such arguments are centered on the denial of the most important duty necessary to maintain a free society. Allowing others leave to do what you do not particularly approve of.

I think those comments began (in terms of AR15s) when individuals began trying to justify their purchases (during the high demand/high priced days) once prices plummeted.

It's not so much that I mind the 9mm vs 45 or 1911 versus Glock 17 discussions, it's how nasty those threads tend to get. There's unfortunately people who take other's choices as personal insults if it's not the choice they'd make.

And there are those size threads. Full size 1911 vs compacts. I have a little one and am proud of it!

Yep, pretty much me also, as this one typically devolves into "I don't use expensive handguns for defensive purposes, because if I had to use it, it would end up in a police evidence room for years and years and years and they'd scratch a number into it and it would be ruined and I'd never get it back." Sheesh, really? Aside from the odds of you having to actually use a gun, wouldn't losing it (after it had done its job) be the very least of your worries? That stuff gets old real fast.

Also -- not mentioned: any discussion in which posters inevitably throw in the term "sheeple" or "liberal." Once we've lowered the level of discourse to this point, the "discussion" at hand has normally turned into juvenile arguing and ad hominem attacks. (Plus, using those silly words generally makes us look like condescending asses to the non-gun community.)

As far as caliber or platform debates (blank vs. blank), sometimes useful information is brought out, and it often becomes entertaining watching various people trying to one-up each other, try to come up with pithy or witty responses and inventing new "facts" in support of their argument. Not too mention that over the years, advances in technology have rendered many of these debates moot (e.g., effectiveness of the 9mm vs. the .45 ACP, reliability of the M16/AR15 platform, etc.).

You aren't kidding.

Some folks invest a lot of ego into their equipment. Once people stop doing that, they realize other people's choices have no bearing on them what so ever.

Of those listed, the "buckshot vs. birdshot" is pretty brainless and, yet, it refuses to go away for some reason.

I agree. You'd think that those on the "buckshot" side would at least look at the evidence, listen to reason, and/or apply a little logic to their arguments.

Mainly because the answers to the ones I chose are so obvious.

Reading the threads over and over is like someone ramming a "K" car into your shins over and over to prove how awesome it is.

Yep, starting off with what do you want to argue today about isn't the way to go.
