Which of YOur Handguns Almost Always Make it it the Range?

My brother once told me that I don't like guns, I just like ammunition. This is pretty descriptive. I am an aficionado of the slightly more obscure rounds. As such, I don't ask myself what gun I want to shoot, but what caliber. Then I figure out which gun I need to take to make it happen.

I have too many guns for one to be SHOT at the range every time I go, or even most times. But my carry is on my hip when I go, and that usually means a CZ 75 P-01 or a Glock 37. The CZ is a kick in the pants to shoot. It is the easiest to shoot, so you need less practice to be able to run it well.

It would be easier to tell you what guns are my safe queens, and those are my S&W 460V and IWI Desert Eagle (due to expense of shooting... but I'm working up some loads). I tend to bring them out to impress guest shooters. Also, the AutoMag has stayed in the safe a lot because it has developed feeding issues, and so it is effectively a single shot. Also, I never really did work up a suitable load for it, and commercial ammo is nil. If they started giving away .50 AE and .460 Mag like it was junk mail, I'd use those guns a lot more.

However, I rotate guns on purpose. I know that a lot of instructors tell you to use one gun, that way you'll know how to use it. But I am not looking to get good with A gun, I am looking to get good with guns [plural]. If it goes bang, I want to be able to shoot it, and shoot it competently. Right now I have plenty of duty pistols, and am working on a magnum repertoire. Evnetually I'll get a bunch of pocket guns, bolt guns, semi-auto rifles, scatter guns, etc. But funds come in only so fast.

So, in short, the CZ or Glock usually make it to the range, but not for shooting. None of them are shot at the range "most of the time."

I'm a serious big game hunter with a handgun, a serious collector of pre-1982 S&W revolvers as well as a hand-loader and bullet caster. For those reasons I tend to shoot big bore revolvers with longer barrels than many of those here.

The current guns that always accompany me to the range are listed and pictured below. They include a S&W 66-1 2.5in, S&W 629-6 5", S&W 27-2 5", S&W 57 6" and a S&W 500 6". The 27-2 was recently replaced by a S&W 627 PC 5"... I usually shoot only two or three of the guns before fatigue sets in

The CC guns I commonly use rotate between a Springfield XD-s .45, a S&W Shield 9mm, a S&W Bodyguard .380, and the Mod. 66-1 pictured below..

"Sometimes the one I like the least, and if I can't warm up to it, it goes away."

Very practical.

My Body guard 38, but it isn't always shot each time.

A friend brings his S&W 422 every time, it's a great gun to teach people with, and fun for us as well. I try to get him to bring his 9mm Commander every time, love shooting it.

I don't always shoot it, but my Kimber Stainless Gold Match and a couple hundred rounds makes every trip to the range with me. The trigger is as smooth as glass. It's a great shooter.

I converted my Glock 23 and 27 to 357 SIG, they're my primary carry guns and I bring them every time. I also bring one of my 1911's, as they're some of my favorites to shoot.

All of them. I guess if I have so few that I can take them every trip, I could use a few more, right honey? ;)

either a ruger single six or heritage roughrider both with 22lr/wmr cylinders. i shoot more 22lr though 22wmr is more fun and accurate.

almost every time...a Colt diamondback .22 (6") and my carry gun...a S&W mod 4553 dao in .45 acp..
Most of the time my first pistol makes it into the range bag. Doesn't seem right if the Ruger, standard, .22 semi is not with me.

I shoot more rifle so the pistols don't get to play every time.

44mag and 45colt both are Ruger 3.75 Birdhead Vaquero's just can't get enough of them, also my 4" 357 Gp100 Ruger

Obviously, my carry piece, an MP Shield, and an old colt huntsman 22. That sucker is the most accurate handgun I've ever fired. Several of us will jump empty 12ga shells at about 20 yards, and I do about as well with that as my buddies using 22 rifles.

If I'm going to shoot pistols at all, I take one of my Ruger Mark II .22LR's, one of my Glock 19 9mm's, one of my LCP .380's (a Gen 1), and one of my Ruger SBH 44mag's. Lately, I've been hauling my .357/44 B&D Redhawk pretty reliably. These get range time 3-4x per month.
