My brother once told me that I don't like guns, I just like ammunition. This is pretty descriptive. I am an aficionado of the slightly more obscure rounds. As such, I don't ask myself what gun I want to shoot, but what caliber. Then I figure out which gun I need to take to make it happen.
I have too many guns for one to be SHOT at the range every time I go, or even most times. But my carry is on my hip when I go, and that usually means a CZ 75 P-01 or a Glock 37. The CZ is a kick in the pants to shoot. It is the easiest to shoot, so you need less practice to be able to run it well.
It would be easier to tell you what guns are my safe queens, and those are my S&W 460V and IWI Desert Eagle (due to expense of shooting... but I'm working up some loads). I tend to bring them out to impress guest shooters. Also, the AutoMag has stayed in the safe a lot because it has developed feeding issues, and so it is effectively a single shot. Also, I never really did work up a suitable load for it, and commercial ammo is nil. If they started giving away .50 AE and .460 Mag like it was junk mail, I'd use those guns a lot more.
However, I rotate guns on purpose. I know that a lot of instructors tell you to use one gun, that way you'll know how to use it. But I am not looking to get good with A gun, I am looking to get good with guns [plural]. If it goes bang, I want to be able to shoot it, and shoot it competently. Right now I have plenty of duty pistols, and am working on a magnum repertoire. Evnetually I'll get a bunch of pocket guns, bolt guns, semi-auto rifles, scatter guns, etc. But funds come in only so fast.
So, in short, the CZ or Glock usually make it to the range, but not for shooting. None of them are shot at the range "most of the time."
