Who here uses a Romak as a serious weapon?

My biggest concern with using my AK as a defensive weapon is the chances of the round penetrating the aggressor and going through 4-6 walls and hitting someone else.

Absolutey, this a common concern that comes up with using the AK for HD.

However, consider the situation ahead of time. During a 2 am break-in, I'm not going to run around my house like a movie, diving over couches and shooting from the hip, etc. In a scenario where perps have gained access to the downstairs (and let's say they are hopped up on Chvias Regal and PCP and feeling strong), 911 is already dialed, and I'm positioned firmly at the top of the steps with the SAR-1. Any fire is going at a downward angle, through the floor. There is no reason to run down there and play "Doom", and shoot through walls. I'm staying on the defensive. :scrutiny:

i would aim downstairs also. if the round went through him, it would land in the floor. luckily, the layout of my house, the perp wouldn't make it too far. my security system would alert me before he had a chance to get up stairs. My 9 is always on my night stand.

Magazine articles

Well the reason I asked originally was because I noticed that alot of the law enforcement and special weapon magazines talk about these Romaks with an attitude that they are fit to be main weapons. I always thought that the Romanian Aks were more like range toys or plinkers. I mean they are sub 400 dollar rifles?
Bought i saw an STG 2000 in a cop magazine that claimed it was a capable and sturdy weapon and therefore I bought it. First AK and I kinda liked it. Now I want to get a WASR since I have been ignoring them all for so long.

Glaser Safety Slugs for using your AK for HD

What about Glaser Safety ammo? I've thought about buying a pack-expensive for my WASR-10 at $16.00 for 6 rounds though. I live in a neighborhood were homes are fairly close together and my home is one story, so I don't have the "shooting down" option, well unless they were breaking in from my basement. If I missed (unlikely { but actually even if I didn't miss too), a round could end up in any one of several homes. I've read about the safety slug and wondered if anyone has tried them. I would be more likely to reach for my WASR for HD if it was loaded with a reliable "safety slug" than I would my old 20 gauge. The old 20 is a bolt action with only a 2 round mag. I'd put 6 rounds of Safety slugs in the WASR.

Use the Russian HP ammo. I've never seen one exit a deer, or a human for that matter.

I've got several deer with my SKS, and worked several murder scenes where the X39 HP rounds were used.

+100 on the Russian HP ammo , I've used my WSAR-10 as my HD /SHTF carbine for about 3 years .. but this year I did replace it with an Oly Arms M4gery , but not as my main deer rifle

It's not about just that, it's also about a missed shot that goes thru drywall. I don't need to see it to know that a round will go thru a wall and still have enough power left over to hit a unintended target.

One of many, but my favorite overall. Bulgarian Milled receiver SLR. Of course it's loaded. It's not the first thing I grab for when/if I hear someone on the porch, but it's beside my BOB, and it's what I'll rely on if TSHTF.

. . . and this is topical for this thread, how?

Years ago when they first arrived I bought 2 new 5.45 SAR-2's. W/o any cleaning or lubing I proceeded to put 4,000rds total (2K per gun) through them right out of the box (had a couple of friends help shoot & load the EG mags I was using). They were 100% reliable and to this date were the most reliable carbines I've ever owned. A good friend took his SAR-2 to a Thunder Ranch course and it held up fine (better than many other carbines, as a matter of fact...). He's put *many* thousands of rds through his SAR-2's and to date has yet to experience a malfunction of any kind.

Just about everything goes through dry wall. A 22Lr will go through 6" of pine boards at 20 yards.

The Russian HP rounds fragment easly. I worked a scene on a drug hit. They ambushed a car useing somthing that shot the X39 round and they were the Russian HP. The rounds would go through the outside of the car door, and almost total frag by the time it reach the interior of the vehicle. The ocupants received a lot of superficial frag wounds but nothing fatial from those rounds. The killing shot came through the windows area after the windows were shot out.

ON the other hand the BG's in the Hollywood shoot out used FMJ X39 rounds and were wounding people through cars and small buildings, but killed no one. :scrutiny:

The answer is to be sure of your aim and back ground before you fire.

Not for me it isn't, and it isn't for others in a suburban/urban setting either. Of course you should be aware of your target and background, that's basic. The problem comes when things in a panicked SD situation don't go exactly as planned. I'll stick to #4 buck for HD. (If TS ever does HTF, I do know my WASR is reliable enough.)

I live in a townhouse/condo type deal so the AK is out for home defense (thats what the shotty is for) but I would not think twice about trusting my life to my WASR. Its as reliable and accurate (maybe even moreso) than my Yugo.

Because it's my alternative to using a SAR, WASR, or any other AK. An Ak is an AK. I picked that one for it's accuracy and the polymer furniture doesn't tend to heat up on the fore end as badly as the wood on my Wasrs. Excuse me for offering alternative input.
