Who Still ACTIVELY Shoots the .30-06?

Deer, elk, antelope, bear* 30-06 all the way. Savage 116 FASK Weather Warrior. I took a lot of animals with a 110B in 30-06 and when it came time that I wanted a NEW rifle I bought another Savage, and in 30-06.

(*carried same rifle with bear tag.. never saw a bear)

My two main rifles are an HRA M1 Garand, FN M70 Fwt. both in .30/06. I'm relatively young, but I appreciate the older, venerated cartridges and rifles.

I've got a .45/70, a .30/30 and then a .280 on the way, but the '06's are the most fired rifles I've got outside of .22s.

Might add an AR before the next election, just to have one.

I have my dad's Remington 721 in 30-06. Sometime this year it is going to get a Leatherwood ART scope so I can start using it more as logging has opened up some 1000m shooting zones in my GMU.

I LOVE the '06! I shoot the following every year or every other year:

M1903
M1903A3
M1917
M1941 Johnson
M-1 Garand

And probably a good half-dozen pre-7.62 X 51 NATO target rifles and throw in a few sporters for good measure.

There's nothing the NATO cartridge can do that the '06 didn't do first!

Seems to me to be the best all-around load there is. Yeah, I shoot the .325, 25-06, .308, and others, but the 30-06 is the go to out of the closet rifle.

After 15 years and thousands of rounds I replaced the firing pin spring in my 30-06 Ruger 77. It's still my #1 hunting rifle.

I do also hunt with a .260 on occasion.

My Garand eats about 600 to 1,000 rounds of 06 annually. And my M70 eats another 500 or so.

I still shoot much more 556 though.

I own more 30-06 chambered rifles than any other cartridge. I go through cycles of shooting them alot and then not so much.

I just got a CZ 550 American in .30-06 about a month ago. It is my first foray into .30 cal territory. I decided on the cartridge due to it's history and performance. I am a loader, so I am really excited for the flexibility of this cartridge. I picked up a Leupold VX-3 around Christmas as well. I am excited to get loading and shooting as soon as the snow melts!

Gosh, are there really any other good hunting rifles besides the 30-06? I started with an 06 for my first hunt and I still use an 06 after over 40 years of hunting. This year I put down a nice 4 point, in Montana we only count the points on one side, I got him early in the season and the steaks are fine. I did hear of one guy up by Clyde Park, MT that actually wore out the barrel of his 30-06 shooting coyotes, he had a lot of sheep. All in all I didn't think it was possible to wear out an 06. Just my thoughts from the Big Sky Country.

My main hunting rifle is a Howa 1500 in 30-06. Before I had another Howa 1500 in .223 I was loading 110gr bullets for the '06 too!
I have a sported M1917 with the original 26" barrel I shoot often at the 200 yard range.
It's my favorite cartridge and there are more rifles.

That's a mighty wide open question.... "... a main rifle for defense, hunting, plinking, or formal target shooting"...

I can't imagine there are many of us that use an '06 for defensive purposes. It's not exactly a plinker either, although it's certainly a hunting rifle.

I have numerous hunting rifles, some of which are perfect for certain game. If the SHTF and I HAD to grab one rifle and one rifle only in order to put food on the table, ALWAYS function, have available ammunition of many types, etc., it would likely be my '06. This of course does not get into the argument about shotguns and .22RF weapons of any sort. I know I could do most anything with the '06, but it's not exactly a pleasant rifle to shoot for recreation.

That's my thought anyway.

Jack O'Connor quote: "I am sure we all could get along in the United States very nicely with a 22 Long Rifle, the 30/06, and the 12-gauge shotgun. But if we did, most gun dealers and manufacturers would go broke and people who wrote about guns would have to go back reading copy, writing TV scripts, or clerking in hardware stores."

Typically when I take a rifle hunting my go-to rifle is a Savage 110 in .30-06. Don't get me wrong - I've got plenty of other choices (.30-30, .308, .270, .257 Roberts, 8mm Mauser, and .225 Winchester), but I always feel most comfortable with that .30-06.

That's my go-to hunting caliber (Ruger M77). I'll shoot my Gustafs 6.5x55 at the range, but the thing is just too long to carry in the woods I hunt, so the Ruger gets the nod.

Home defense is the trusty 12ga. or the M&P 40.

I agree with sage5907 and Mr. O'Connor. However, for us shooters, it would be very boring. I shoot various rifles/calibers for different purposes. My goto hunting rifle is an M70 in .30-06.

Drue

If I could have only one caliber rifle then I'd choose a .30-06 for its versatility and popularity (easy-to-find ammunition). I have nothing else to add.
