Who Still ACTIVELY Shoots the .30-06?

I guess, other than .22LR, I've shot more .30-'06 rounds from my '03 Springfield than any other round from any other gun over the last couple of years. Started out as "working up loads," and just became my favorite shooter. Love that rifle, and that round.

While .308 is my favorite round I still do a lot of hunting and target shooting with 30.06.

I also have the twins in 30.06 that are a lot of fun too!

Heck yeah.
But it's a bit too unwieldy for hunting.

Back in 1989 I bought a Winchester model 70 in .30-06 because I wanted a deer rifle. I still have it & hunt with it every year. I didn't really know a whole lot about guns but I knew that was what all the older guys I had worked with used. Every time I think about getting a different rifle I come back to the realization that I don't really need anything else. One day I may pick up something else just cause but the .30-06 has always worked well for me.

I have five .30-06s -- a Ruger M77, a Winchester M70 (pre-'64), two M1903A3s (one Remington and one S-C) and an M1.

While on horseback I usually have either a Winchester Model 94 or a sporterized .30-40 Krag in the saddle boot, but the .30-06 is what I use for serious hunting.

I built the first gun I ever killed a deer with in '76 into a .338/06. Still have the take off barrel (MkX Mauser). I missed the '06 so much, I traded for another, but sold it off (Parker-Hale). Not having an '06 was so bad, I bought a Colt Lt. Rifle. It's a "winner". Most accurate big-game rifle I own (only a Rem. M700 in .22-250 bests it). I "inherited" my older brothers M-1 National match (it wasn't "born" that way, but he bought it already converted with a BlueSky barrel, ect. He won the Sharpshooters class with it in the 1988 Montana state championship).

I still prefer it ('06) over all others I've owned. The .257wbymag shoots flatter, as does the .270 (but only a little), but neither have the put-down of the .30cal. Given the bullet selection of the .30cal, I'll always have one.

I've got several calibers of rifles that I just own one of. But I have three .30-'06 rifles...Remington 700 BDL, H&R Ultra, and Sears mdl. 53. So I reckon the .30-06 wins out here for hunting. M1 carbine is home defense rifle.

My old man used his Mauser sporter in 30-06 for 4 decades to kill mule deer. I've been using my Howa 1500 -06 for 17 years.

I wish I had his Mauser, but the wicked Step-mother's kid kaboomed it.

I seem to grab my old Remington 700 in 30-06 when hunting season comes around. I have other options but there is just something about the old 06. I "hand load" and the load pushes a 150gr sst at about 2800 fps. Yes it is a little slow but very accurate and have taken more Whitetails with it.

The 30-06 is very versatile especially if you hand load.

When I first became interested in shooting I found out that 8 out of the 10 rifles in my families' gun safe were 30-06. I have since been a huge fan and have acquired multiple rifles in that caliber myself. I find it to be an extremely versatile cartridge and I recommend it to anyone who wants a "do all" rifle.

I don't/can't reload so no .30-06 guns for me. I certainly would own and shoot an M1 Garand if things were different.

ALL factory ammo for the big aught tree is just too expensive these days.

I have had a 30-06 Springfield all of my life. Over 60 years!

The 30-06 is the greatest rifle cartridge ever. There have been two world wars and the 30-06 won both of them. It's the most popular cartridge.

Recently I was fortunate to buy a well made custom rifle. It's a 30-06 with an octagon barrel on a mauser action. It's stock is exceptional in it's wood grain and quality.

I have made some good shots on game and varmints with it.

still got couple of 30-06s.....at 60, don't need them....nowadays I rely on .308 or 7mm-08 for almost same performance without the recoil I don't need. great caliber for sure, but guess they will stay in the safe and be willed to 2 young men that will enjoy them.

I am only 25 years of age. But bought a m77 MK II standard chambered for the '06 five years ago. It has been my main hunting rifle since then. And I have been fortunate enough to take multiple mule deer, an elk, pronghorn, and a black bear with it. I definitely go against the norm of my age group since I don't have the latest and greatest wizz-bang magnum. But I'll be keeping this rifle for life!

I chose .30-06 because very few others are suitable for everything from coyote to black bear and beyond, depending on bullet weight/type and charge. I'm sure other cartridges could mimic aught-six versatility but I don't know of any other caliber with as much manufacturer support regarding bullet weight/type nor any cartridges that have the vast diversity of factory-loaded ammunition. I don't hunt but have three rifles suitable for it... beefy .22 cal pellet rifle for rodents, .223 Rem for coyote to small deer, 12ga shotgun, .30-06 for coyote to black bear and large hog.

EDIT: In my inexperienced opinion (just researching) I'm sure (in my geographic region) I could get by with just the pellet rifle and aught-six.

I use my Garands quite a bit so do shoot up a good quantity of 30-06. Glad I reload to help keep cost sort of reasonable. It is adequate for all North American gamek and you can always purchase a box of ammo at the most remote outpost that sells the stuff.

Count me in the "30-06 forever" club.
Me too.

'03's, M1's, and my buddy's 1918 BAR and 1919A4/A6's (hey, what can I say, he went "full size" and I went "compact". If Id only known then and had more money. :D) are my favorites.

My '03-A3 (Rem June 1944) has just over 5000 rounds thru her since I bought her for $50 in 1970. God only knows how many rounds thru her before me. She will easily shoot 1" groups at 50 yards with GI sights. I use her for anything larger than a coyote.
