I've been struggling with this one for just one short month now, but I can't get it out of my mind... I want another 10mm!

WHY?! WHY?! WHY?! :banghead:

The itch... it's like a virus with no cure...

Seriously, I can't figure out what the attraction is. 10mm doesn't do much that 40S&W or 45ACP won't do. The ammo is expensive and sometimes hard to find. Unless you reload of course...

Anyone have any experience with STI or SVI in 10mm (or any caliber for that matter)? I'm hoping to have one of them build me a custom 10mm, but maybe I'll settle for a Delta Elite and a trip to a gunsmith.

Ahh, so many guns, so little money... :D

I like my Delta Elite. Picked it up used right here on THR but I don't think it really NEEDS to see a gunsmith. Of course mine already had a trigger job and I've upgraded the recoil system to a convential Wolff with a standard guide rod and done a couple other tweaks. Then made my own grips. Then got stainless controls for some contrast to go with the trigger and the polished sides of the hammer which now both need to be slighly bead blasted to match the new accents . . . but I'm doing all that myself and it's 99% cosmetic ;)

. . . on the other hand Sean's Yost custom is REALLY nice . . .

But I digress.

What specificly do you have in 10mm now and what features are you looking for? Maybe we can help you spend your money

You mean this one? :D

10mm doesn't do much that 40S&W or 45ACP won't do. The ammo is expensive and sometimes hard to find.

-Neither .40 S&W nor .45 ACP can even get close to 10mm ballistics. Factory 10mm is 600-700+ ft-lbs at the high end.

-If you like sectional density/penetration potential, neither .45 ACP or .40 S&W can match the 200-220gr 10mm projectiles out there.

-For cheap practice fodder, Georgia Arms has 10mm ammo for less than most folks spend on .45 ACP.

You don't want to buy a 10MM. It'll rip your arm out of socket, the ammo costs $40 for a box of 20, and the bullet will penetrate 2 city blocks.

Just buy some other gun and leave the 10MM's for us to pick up at a reduced price. :D

:banghead: Oh thanks Sean, like I really needed that :D

I used to have a very nice Delta Elite, beautifully customized by Wayne Novak. Like a fool I sold it to an FBI guy that collected Deltas. :banghead:

I also had a match gun built by Nowlin Mfg, based on a SVI high-cap frame, Nowlin slide, match 5" barrel, and with a comp'd barrel as well. Like a fool I sold it to another Marine who was looking to shoot IPSC and such. :banghead:

If you notice, there's much foolishness in this post ;)

Anyway, I miss shooting my 10mm's, and I've had the itch to get a new one for a while now. I was originally thinking about a Witness 10mm, since they're very inexpensive, but then I started thinking high dollar. I've been surfing the STI and SVI web sites, and I've designed everything from a basic 1911 to a long-slide hybrid comp. STI lists an awesome looking gun called the Duty One, but they don't list 10mm as an option. I've emailed them to see if they'll do a 10mm, but haven't heard back yet.

Whatever I get, I want to be able to carry it if I choose. But, I'd like it to be something of a unique piece, hence the STI/SVI hybrid schemes.

I'm off to Cuba tomorrow, but when I get back this weekend, I'm committing to something... if I can ever figure out what it will be :(

I have a Colt Delta Elite stainless and I built a 45 ACP top end for it. I shoot mostly 45, but the 10 is cool. 10mm has some real power. About the only thing that can top it, and only out to 50 yards or so, is the 45 Super.

You mentioned SVIs & STIs, so I take it you're already leaning toward the 1911-platform in 10mm. Certainly cool guns, but not the only ones around that make shooting this cartridge so much fun! :)

Don't forget the S&W 10mms, especially the 1006. ;)

It's the big bad booty-daddy of Smith's 10XX-series.

A slim-packing profile with 10-rounds of no B.S. 10mm firepower.

All American stainless steel, all business.

This one's accurate, reliable and durable.

Nice to run into some 10MM expertise here.

What is a S&W 1006 like the one pictured here worth??

Thanks!

Around $450-500 in my neck of the woods. I paid $499 for my Mag-na-ported 1006. Marcus

I own the grandaddy of all 10mms the Bren Ten. I think I can tell you why you want 10mm...

They're just a ball to shoot! Less muzzle climb than a .45 ACP, More powerful than a .40, flat out to a hundred yards, and to quote a friend of mine: "All the power of a 20 mike-mike in half the size!"

Don't discount the Witness 10 yet. It might be an inexpensive way to quieten those nasty voices urging you to get one. There's a mystique about the 10mm: it's the red-headed stepchild of calibers, yet we all know hot hot a redhead can be! :)

:D Is that a Gold Dot?

I'm not really set on a 1911 design, but it seemed like it's that or a Witness. I've just never liked the feel of S&W autos or Glocks for that matter. I know they're fine guns, but I just don't like the feel I get with them.

I found what seems like a pretty decent price on a used STI Trojan 40 (which with a barrel change can grow up to become a 10mm :) ), but I'm still waiting on the owner to give me some additional information about how much use the gun's had.

The Witness is very attractive because of the price, but I've no personal experience with them. I've seen a lot of good comments on this site however.

Anyone know a gunsmith who specializes in working on the Witness? (Let me think now... trigger job, night sights, hard chrome, maybe some checkering or stipling...:) )

Oh my G_D this evil bastard is selling his Delta Elite... Must be a plant from the anti gun crowd:neener:

What brand of bullet/ammo is that?

I went back to TFL and dug around and found where I got the pics from.

They where originaly posted by Carbon-15 (he still around here?)

here's what he said;
Pictured below is a recovered 155gr Pro-Load 10mm fired from a distance of 10 yards from a Glock 20 into 10% ordnance Gelatin. Impact velocity was 1315fps (596 ft.lbs), it penetrated 17inches, weighed 153.9gr and had a recovered diameter of..get this...1.239 inches!!!
All I could say was wow. I have never seen expansion like this where the bullet actualy held together in one peice. Impressive, to say the least.

Why do you need a reason? If you want it and can afford it, then by all means, get it. I don't regret any gun I own, just the ones I sold or didn't buy.

Witness, Best Buy in a 10mm, as long...

... as you understand that the USA importer/servicing agent may not be the ideal support an original buyer would want.

Though, as indicated, the Tan Witness does offer the CZ clone fit(for many hands) and the optional conversions that other lines do not have available.

But for EAA.....

A few reasons why I have not bought a Witness 10mm.

EAA has a horrible reputation for customer support, that is the number one reason.

Second, some have said that the Witness will not hold up to full power 10mm ammo for very long, I know that they come with weak springs and I wonder if a combination of recoil buffer and strong springs would give these pistols extra durability.

Third, quality control seems to be a real hit or miss proposition, I would hate to get a bad one since the importer may not be of much help.

Fourth, few custom parts seem to be available, unlike the 1911 design.

Fifth, I have, in the entire time they have been available, seen only one and it was blued. No dealer in my area will touch them and the gunshows are almost devoid of Witness pistols.

I guess I will continue to shoot my Delta Elite when I want to fire off some 10mm ammo.

A few years back, I was having a bad day at the range while shooting steel plates, timed.
The plates just didn't want to fall, even with a solid hit.
I was shooting a CZ, loaded with lead 9mm loaded to about 1050 FPS.
I switched to a sigpro 2340, shooting 357SIG, still no dice.
I finally switched to a H&K USP compact in .45 loaded +p with 200 grain hollow points.
Still no love.
Couldn't get the plates to fall.
A friend of mine loaned me his Glock 20 10mm, with his handloads, 200 grain XTP, loaded to about 1250.
I loaded his 15 round mag with those handloads, and took another 10 rounder, in case the plates still wouldn't fall.
8 plates, that's all I had to shoot.
Well, short story shorter, I only used 8 of his handloads, and all plates fell like they were hit by the fist of God.
I shot his G20 again at the range, shot VERY well, even with the crappy sights.
Later that week, I owned that G20.
I had no idea why he would sell it to me, but in a moment of weakness, he did.
More 10mm purchases were to follow.
I have been happy with all of them, except for the 10mm witness, but that's another story for another time.
