So personally? I am not sure why people take comments about this pistol or that pistol so personally. In the end they are just pieces of metal. They are a tool. They do not define us or make us who we are.

I love Colts.... someone else might not. I do not love Sig as much as I used to. If you hate Colts and point out their faults I do not take it personally.

Why are so many people so attached to their consumer choices?

Because people don't really come here looking to learn they come here looking for validation of previously held opinions.

If you attack my choice of guns you're attacking me.

Don't believe me? look up any thread about Jiminez, jennings, bryco or Llama, you'll get 90% "These pistols don't have a good reputation." or "my personal experience with these firearms is negative." and a horror story or two.

The other 10% will be people telling the rest of the posters how wrong they are and what fine weapons these guns are, and how they've never had any problems with the one they bought and we're all just haters

Funny how you passing off somebody elses bad experience as your own is now OUR fault for being overly sensitive.

If they were just hunks of metal with no reason for personal attachment, then forums like this would never gain any traction. But you're missing the point because of your own near-sightedness and dislike for the turn that Sig thread took. Just like any other hobby, the people involved in it are enthusiasts ... and because passionate. They don't become passionate about guns that they dislike.

You contradict yourself - "They're just hunks of metal", but "I love Colts" ... you know the answer to why we all love our guns, you say it yourself. So stop trying to be flip and dismissing Sig lovers are simply defensive.

No the difference is that I do not attack people who say they don't like Colts like you are doing.

I did not pass anything off. I was missing a link. I corrected it after you pointed it out.

You seem to be the poster child for this issue. Are you able to have a discussion or are you taking this personally?

Winner Winner chicken dinner!!!!

I think that most people can take criticism as long as it's honest, not insulting, doesn't have an agenda, and is not contrived. So, I would say delivery and content are most important when criticizing.

There are those that are married to one platform. Most of those seem be very young, or in some cases have not had the opportunity to shoot and experience other handguns.

Dobe I agree with you but it seems like there are times when people are dismissive of real criticism of their brand of choice.

People here claim that I hate Sigs because I say they made some major missteps lately. Those who know me know that I am a long time Sig shooter. They know that I own or have owned over 10+ Sig Pistols in just the last 5 years. I have shot everything from the new P250 to the old stand buys like the P220 in 9mm.

Yet if I say Sig has changed guy who are buying their new pistols jump all over me. Call me a hater tell me I don't know what I am talking about. The crazy think about it is that I want people to know there are issues so that people can demand more. Ask for more and get more. I nthe edn I would love nothing more than to get Sig back on track.

I so wanted a 556 but they just took too long to get the thing right so I bought a Colt 6920 and did not look back. I sometimes think of getting one but instead have chosen to wait for the Colt Piston AR. I feel like I cannot support Sig's current culture.

TurboFC3S is a classic example. He has been on the Sig forum all of 1 year. He has been here about the same time. Yet he has no problems tell me a member of over 4+ years on both forums that I do not know anything.

I think it is sad that people cannot be more objective about a piece of metal.

rockwell is onto the right track, so many just looking for validation.

I am not alone when answering some of the "need advice" threads when I try to tell people it is a personal choice. The fun in buying a firearm, to me at least, is shooting as many as possible to get the feel for the one I like and can shoot well.

Oh yeah and don't forget not all are made of just metal, some actually prefer the plastic ones

So true I could change that to metal/plastic. :p

I am not trying to turn this into a pissing contest. I really wonder.

Thanks for your replies 6x6pinz & rockwell

Yawn ...

You're projecting your own sensitivity onto others. I have no brand of choice, in case the next big flood comes I'm ready to start a firearms Ark ... I have at least 2 of everything, and love em all. Since I personally have no bad experience with any of my guns, only good, that's ALL I share. I don't spread hearsay, the internet is full enough of it.

There's another twist.

I've been told that it's somehow bad that I recommended a gun that I own -- for the exact purpose the OP asked about.

But... What I'd written was that I had checked out all the guns in question in the thread, and ended up with X.

OF COURSE I own it.

My mommy doesn't buy me guns. I spent my hard-earned cash on X because, for the application in question, I thought it was the BEST CHOICE. So I recommended that the OP take a look at it. Is that somehow wrong?

Apparently, some other people's mommies must buy them guns, and they think that the only reason I'd recommend something that I chose to buy is because I need validation for my mommy's choice or something.:scrutiny:

realascout. Ask a harley Rider why he won't ride anything else??????

Not much difference. There is an iconic following on guns just like cars and other products..

I think it adds alittle spice to life even.

Sure Jacko I understand that to an extent. I like passion. Its not passion that I am asking about. I am asking why people take a comment about a product and make it personal.

Too many take it to the extreme look at turbo... all he can do is troll me at this point because I said I don't like the new Sigs. He cannot comprehend the idea that I criticize because I love them. Passion does not have to be blind contradictory to reality IMHO. :banghead:

To a lot of folks, attacking their choice in firearms is very close to attacking them personally.

Not me. I'm a librarian. I examine each firearm and consider their faults, merits, and intended use. Then I make recommendations depending on the sophistication and intended activities of the prospective owner.

Just like doing Reader's Advisory. Just because I don't advise all kids to read Harry Potter shouldn't be taken as a slight against J. K. Rowling. It's just not a good fit.

If you had an ugly wife, and someone told you she was ugly, would you agree with them? Or what if you really didn't know she was ugly. Would you just accept their opinion, or take issue, because it reflected poorly on your choice of women? Some, maybe many, gun owners are actually proud of the choice they have made in choosing this or that gun. THAT is why they take offense.

Sharps-

This guy not only agreed, but he turned it into a hit song.

Now the reason you might not want people to call your wife ugly is that it might hurt her feelings. Guns don't have emotions.

So you're saying that guys with prepubescent egos might take a firearm recommendation as a personal attack. And I agree. However, prepubescent emotional development reflects poorly on a grown man.

Bet you all the original poster is a Cardinal's fan, too.

The Doc is out now.

PS. former Cubs fan. This year, after 53 years, I finally decided that I had enough. Don't really care about the other teams to care anymore. But, GO BEARS! :neener:

Well stated.

Some of the most vicious defenders I've seen of late are Hi-Point owners. Same goes for local forums I belong to. They basically say if you spent more on anything else - you're stupid.

Folks just want to believe they're smart and made a smart purchase - they want validation. Personally, I trade stuff so often that I really don't have favorites - other than I really like 1911s - regardless of brand...

It reminds me of the reaction yo get when you try to give a parent advice: "DON'T TELL ME HOW TO RAISE MY CHILD!!!"

I don't understand why some people get bent all out of shape if others disagree with their opinions, it never bothers me, cause I know I'm always correct.:uhoh: I just feel pity for those misguided souls. Taint my fault they ain't as bright as me.:scrutiny:
:neener::D

It's wonderful to have preference for one platform or another; finding and sharing what works for you is what makes these forums, and discussion in general, possible.

Just like with anything else, you can cross the line. Letting yourself become consumed or even validated by a model or brand name is childish, and as adults we need to avoid that kind of behavior.
