whats the reason? i hear alot of people sayin how much they love them and such. but i dont get it?

Ah, easy young grasshoppa... the venerable 1911 has "soul". :)

Pick one up for yourself and put a few hundred rounds through it and perhaps you'll feel the magic too!

It's one of those things where you try it and love it or it just doesn't do it for you. Nothing to really explain if it doesn't do it for you.

Reasons for me:

It just "points" right

Feels great in my hand

Conceals very well due to slim profile and single stack magazine

Has history

Great looks

Awesome trigger (I really like single actions guns)

Heres my Kimber

aaronkelly that is a nice looking pistol. i love the engraving.

i'm a huge 1911 fan. feels the best to me, and i shoot them more accurately than any other pistol. and i like their looks.

the way i see it is, if a gun can be as popular as they are now after almost 100 years, they gotta be doing something right.

It has a great trigger pull. It's in the right caliber. It has a great trigger pull. It's slim, which means it fits in your hand. It has a great trigger pull. It's slim, so it's easy to conceal. It's ergonomics are perfect. It has a great trigger pull. It can be built into an uber reliable defensive piece, or a super accurate match gun. It has a great trigger pull. It has a sense of soul and history and style that no other handgun can match. It has a great trigger pull. It's one of the easiest handguns to shoot well.

And did I mention it has a great trigger pull?

Nothing beats being able to get 7-9 rounds in the gray of a "Q" target at 10 yards in 1.5 seconds with little more than a few minutes of practice, with a stock Norinco no less. That's what sold me on the 1911.

For the same reason I love women; even though they all serve the same basic function, they come in an endless variety, with each having its own distinct personality.

For me I like the feel of an all steel gun, the amazing trigger, its ergonomics, the caliber, and the ability to customize.

Most of all though, it just feels awesome to shoot. It's not like I am attached to the history and unwilling to try any new platform, it is just that I shoot the 1911 better than those other platforms. If I ever find something I shoot better, I will switch.

Doubt that will happen though...;)

The reasons I love my 1911:
It fits my hands perfectly
It is stone cold reliable
I love the model's history
My wife gave it to me for our anniversary.

When a women catches your eye and you can't get her out of your head how do you explain that one either?
Two things have caught my eye that way. The 1911 & my wife. One of the best parts about the 1911 is you don't have to keep just one. :neener:

Fits the hand great, great trigger pull, easy to strip down & clean, be one with the gun. Enough recoil to know you shot something, but not enough to bother you. boom..................thud - just love it. :)

22 yrs and counting on the wife. 32 yrs and counting on the 1911.

I'm not such a fan myself. It's a classic but just doesn't do much for me.

I have one and am looking forward to getting rid of it! Too much of a cult about them and the Glocks for me.

I far more prefer a HP if I want a classic gun for todays use.

There are a lot of guns I like for concrete, rational reasons. There are a few for which I have an affinity that transcends rational explanation--mystery and magic.

The 1911 is not one of those guns for which I have an irrational exuberance. Now, another progeny of John Browning, the High Power....

1911's?

I like 1911s. There's a reason they have remained unchanged in nearly a century. John Browning, the 1911, and .45ACP were all blessings from a higher power.

I do not know about other people, but I like 1911s for several reasons.

First and foremost, they get a big bullet on target quicker and more reliably than any other pistol I have ever shot. Next, they carry very well, a full size gun close to my kidney area, without printing. Lastly, the ability to make the pistol into exactly what you want is wonderful. There is no need to adapt to the pistol, customize it to yourself instead. That is true "No Compromises" and "Perfection".

When I was a young man, I did not want to be one who liked 1911s. I also did not want to be one who liked Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Bach and Mozart. I wanted to demonstrate my worldliness by liking more esoteric guns, artists and composers. As I grew older, I became a bit more open to the established paradigms. I learned why the 1911, and the works of Rembrandt and Mozart have endured. There are things in our world that are just right. It does not mean that other forms are lesser, it just means that some are very very right.

Bravo, XavierBreath; yours is the best explanation of the 1911 that I have seen.

If the 1911 was available perfectly machined and fitted, from the factory, completely reliable and with a Tenifer finish I would buy one. In a heart beat.

Soft steel with a painted coating, and poorly fitted MIM parts just don't do it for me.

Unfortunatley, the only ones that I have seen finished to my liking are from Heinie, Vickers, Yost, and a few others. Even though I could buy one, I would never be able to use it, as a tool, without a great deal of anxiety.

That's why I am praying that Glock comes out with a stretched G36 at this years SHOT show. According to Farnham that might just happen--2 new Glock pistols.

If you saw my targets you'd know. I feel when I shoot my 1911s I know what good shooting is all about and that the platform enables me to do my best. It is the most elegant sidearm I am aware of. Other handguns get the job done but with the 1911 I feel a merger of man and machine that is, well, most pleasant.
