Why the continuing ammo shortage?

I agree with the gunshops raising prices on current stock in order to replace, if they do not cover replacement cost they will lose money and go out of buisness

im going to elaborate on my previous statement by saying i don't want to have ammo prices and firearm prices go through the roof... it isn't good for business... it makes ammo and guns less accessible to everyone... its my goal to provide guns and ammo to everyone, regardless of their income level... but i cant escape the fact of overhead... its very very costly to own and operate an indoor shooting range and firearm store these days...

Pro reloads

My Buddy shoots competition big time, so he buys large batches of 9mm reloads, it is now rolling off our guys machines, picking up 15,000 Tues night.

The word prior to this, no primers, no bullets! Not now. Even 147g.

Strangely enough. At the most recent gun show I bought the 100 round box of 45 ACP from Winchester from a table there for the same price I would pay at Wal-Mart. On thr third day of the show, there was a lot of ammo, powder, and primers left so it looks like the craze has definately calmed down a bit.

Always in stock at the wally worlds in San Antonio. Federal 550's all day long :)

JOe
Maybe a regional thing. Here in FL I've been buying 500 - 1,000 rounds of Mimi-Mag each month.

if i misinterpreted your sarcasm i apologize i still find it difficult to see facial expressions via txt...

I'll bet the iphone has an app for that. ;)

Plenty of ammo down here in southern Arizona. Unfortunately, at the LGS, it's priced so high it's sitting piled in the shipping boxes - then again maybe I just keep showing up right after they unload the truck.

The short answer to the OP's original question is simple.

Because Obama is still in office.

You must not be in Yuma, there is very little to none available here, has been that way since before the election. What's a LGS?

Because I reload for many calibers I only have to buy ammo for my Beretta 96 in .40 Smith.
It's hard to find!
The last time I was at the "local" Cabella's the ammo shelves were for the most part bare.

as far as I have noticed the shortage ended months ago, I have found ammo for all my gunsd at reasonable prices and some .223 even below pre-obama prices.

Still a shortage here (NW Ohio), at least for 9mm and 38. Can usually find everything else. I have checked all of the local meijer and wal-*mart stores multiple times a week and their shelves are bare. Bass Pro is the same way. Only place I found that has it is Gander Mountain and that is most likely because they want $19.99 for a 50 box of regular WWB in 9mm. I did however score last night. On a whim, I stopped at wally world on the way home from work and scored 4 boxxes of 100 WWB @ $20.97 each (9mm). It was all they had. The employee said he had put it in the case just a few hours before. That brings my total to 550 rounds. I usually buy it whenever I can find it (almost never). Got my first gun 3 weeks ago (FNP 9)and have only put 50 rounds thru it...its killin me!

The shortage may be letting up a bit nationally, but the varying stories posted in this thread tell me that the shortages are more regional in nature today.

I can get 40sw no problem but as for 9mm you can't get it. The best thing I have done is buy a G27 (40cal) so I at least can find ammo for it.

I have also had problems with the wal-mart stores around here trying to place limits on how many boxes of ammo you can purchase (6 boxes per day per customer). They have tried to say after 10pm they stop selling ammo (not true) as all you have to do is get a manager to open the case to sell it. If you have this problem just call 1-800-WAL-MART let them know the situation and problem solved.

Just thought I would let folks know you can get things done if you aren't scared to follow up.

huh, we must live in the same area of NC i'm around gastonia, about 7 of them within about 20 miles of me, and .40 is the only handgun ammo i ever see in... other than .44. i also bought a .40 with no other reason than having something to shoot. a couple of them around here have started getting the winchester 333 round boxes, and some keep cci stingers occasionally. i was at the wal-mart in cherryville yesterday and they had 2 100 round boxes of .40, and 5 or 6 50 round boxes, but no other handgun ammo.

I live in Eastern NC; EXACT same thing here. Walmart always has .40 S&W in stock, and the 100 round count CCI 22 LR and 17 HMR as well, and sometimes .44 Mag. But NOTHING else. Bulk packs of 22LR were starting to come back a few months ago, but that proved to be a mirage. Rifle ammo is pretty sporadic as well.

Including local Gunshops, I've maybe seen a couple of boxes of .380 in the last year.

And I've not put my hands on small pistol primers in more than a year. Luckily, I had just stocked up literally days before the great ammo/primer panic kicked off, but I'm down to my last 500 or so now.

I have noticed a fair number of gunshops using wal-mart as one of their prime ammo sources (wallie world white box). The markup varies tremendously. Some turn around and only add a few percent to the wal-mart price, while others ... well, I almost puked in my mouth when I saw a 100 round count box of 9mm Winchester White Box at a gunshow for $80.

Luckily, there is a gunshop out in the boondocks here that has a wide ammo selection, and very fair prices too, though he usually only has a box or three in supply for each caliber. Last time I was their I bought the last 50 round box of Magtech .357 Mag FMJ for $23.

Just saw stacks of 9mm and .40 at my local WM. WWB and UMC- 50rds and bulk 100 and 250rd boxes. Same prices as they were last year too.

Christmas is still 2 weeks away. I'm thinking demand is slowing to a crawl about now with so many factors involved.

.22 rimfire is next to nonexistant, I have not seen rimfire at Wallyworld in over a year

You need to move to Arkansas. In my neck of Arkansas they have a 4'x4' stack of it. remington 550 bulk boxes for 11 bucks. They can't get rid of the stuff, I estimate around 10,000 rounds of .22 at one wally world alone.

The idea that an ammo shortage, if it still exists, is in any way related to the wars does not make sense. As far as I can tell the one caliber that you can find anywhere is large supply is .223 and that's what the troops are using. I was at Dicks a few days ago and they had at least 6 different brands of .223. Remington has been selling for $8 a box for months.

Our military doesn't use .223, they use 5.56. Lots of hunters use .223, though...

Do you guys think California's new ammo registration law that kicks in on Feb 11 (or so I think) has anything to do with the shortages in the rest of the nation? After all, with 40 million residents they are a large part of the nation and what they do must impact other states.

I imagine that some CA gun owners are ordering all the ammo they can online, before the online ammo buying ban takes effect. And stripping shelves bare at local shops while that can still do so without being in some damn ammo data base that effectively is a backdoor gun registry. After all, it's not too hard to figure out that you own guns and what type based on the ammo you buy.

Here in the Milwaukee area it seems easy to find 9 mm & .40 S&W -- on sale at Cabela's even. Doesn't do me any good though, since what I need is .357 Mag, which seems the hardest one to find.

If Obama thought gun owners were bitter before, inflict a shortage lasting over a year upon them and see how happy they are then. One can only hope the Dems feel our pain at the polls when we give them a swift kick to the curb next fall.

20% of gun sales happen in CA. That's one in five guns get sold to a CA resident, while the other 49 states share the other 4 guns.

It will be interesting to see what happens hen AB962 goes into effect for handgun ammunition on 2-1-11.

It is being contested in court already. IIRC it was San Fran's ban on mail order ammo that was shot down. . .

Nevermind. Upon pulling up the thread Freakshow, this is old news to you. Your all over the politics forum on calguns.net already. :D GOOD FOR YOU!

I've been seeing a little more 9mm, 40, and 45 ammo at my local gun shop (where they have been real hit and miss over the past year). The prices are a little more reasonable too.

But if you look at the major online suppliers, Midway, Natchez, Midsouth, NONE of them currently has a single pistol or rifle primer in stock. Until that changes I believe the fear factor will continue.
