Why the continuing ammo shortage?

AAAAHHHHH so we have a gentleman that admints he wasn't a "planner". And just realized all this idiotic fear by the gun loving fraternity has hurt this sport more so than the administration has.

Many of fail to realize that we're all in this together and its not necessary all about Me!, Me!, Me!.

Those of you who read American Rifleman (which I bet is many of you) likely saw that the NRA has a "Trigger The Vote" campaign where they try to sign up new voters at places like gun shows. As I recall, they pointed out that voting has more power than stripping shelves bare of ever gun and cartridge that exists.

I just want some 9mm :( We're completely out everywhere I normally shop (Wal-Mart, Bass Pro, Dick's, etc)

I just want to go to the range and not have to pay their doubled prices! AUGH!

I just ordered 10 boxes of 9mm (& 1 box of Fed Hydroshox JHP) from Cabelas. Right now they are offering free shipping on orders over $100.

I found 9mm practice FMJ for $9.99/50.

Plenty of .40 at local Wallys lately, but little to no 9mm until just today. No 9mm on the shelf but the always helpful gal asked what I needed, and when I replied 9mm she asked if I could wait a moment so she could check the back in case the night stockers dropped the ball.

Lo and behold, a case of Winnie 100 round in 9mm, and a really big case of .45 ACP !

But if that one lady or one older guy is not working, forget even asking for something not seen.

In Pennsylvania the shortage continues. Gettysburg Wal-Mart empty, yellow sign six boxes only has reappeared, Cabelas in Nov. was pitiful with ZERO primers except shotgun, People are scared, and demand remains very high. I predict 2010 will see more of the same with strong demand, "for as long as we can get it!"
.. Same thing happening here; around Harrisburg

the shortage is just about over i would say its the high prices on everything i am waiting to see go awya but i doubt they will. just about everything is available but pricey.

I fear it'll be like gas prices...once elevated they wont come back down...by much anyway!

Why lower the price...people will buy it anyways....(corporate greed)

Good grief.

Those eeeeeevil corporations (your employer) seeking to make money! How unconscionable! Don't they realize they should operate like a non-profit? I mean, you need (want) cheap ammo! Nevermind that even today's prices are far cheaper than they were 30 years ago (inflation adjusted)! Your milk has gone up in price more than twice the rate of ammunition, but those ammo companies are STILL making money! I AM OUTRAGED! (not really)

BTW Gas prices came down over 50% and are now at approx 60% of their prior high levels.

What continuing shortage? Everything is in stock and on sale in my area. BTW there never was and never will be a shortage and Gander Mtn. with the prices they charge.

Yeah, I've made the same observation. Of course, they have .357 Mag target ammo in 100-packs, because they're charging an anything-but-cheap $70 for it. I think I can see why it doesn't disappear instantly.

bababooey32, your post is a little 2 dimensional as far as ammo prices go. wal-mart hasn't gone up in prices too much in the past year or so; but like mentioned above, places like gander mountain and others charge up to 2 and 3 times retail prices. there are plenty of people to attest to it who have already posted in this thread. i'm as much for capitalism as the next conservative, but someone must be oblivious to not notice any gouging.

Seems to be slowly letting up around these parts...

Slowly seems the key word here. It's clearly been getting better around here as well for several months. What's so very frustrating is that the movement toward better seems to be at a snail's pace.

It seems that most would agree this shortage is largely in response to Obama, but the guy was elected 13.5 months ago. It stunning that this can keep going & going like the Energizer Bunny.

It's clear that ammo hoarders will eventually have to stop due to finite room to store ammo and eventually they simply run out of money. It seems they have far more space & cash (credit) than I could have ever imagined.

Very simple. The number of people who are hoarding ammo is on the increase, they are faster to the stores than you are, and they have more money than you do.

riiiight.........some folks need to study econ 101. Remember that corporate greed when you get a raise

I have boxes of ammo from over 20 years ago that are higher priced than now

All this hoarding that makes it a pain in the a** for us to get ammo, should end up biting some fools in the a**. I can just imagine some fools with every spare room stacked to the ceiling with ammo and then he finds that he's the greatest fool of them all when the ammo shortage comes crashing to an end and his ammo isn't worth anywhere near what he paid.
Prices may drop but never back to the prices before this present administration took office. I have a very large cache of ammo that was purchased over many years and not as a panic buyer and I don't think I am a fool.

PS: We don't have an ammo shortage in my area, you just have to know where to buy it. I can get any caliber that I want within a mile of my house for at least 40 to 50% cheaper than Dick's or Gander Mountain.

Seems that DFW Wal Marts are getting quite a bit of Federal 9mm in lately. I've managed to score about 2,400 rounds since Thursday and there has been plenty left for others. I came home with 36 boxes just today. If any of you live close to Wal Mart on 3040 in Lewisville, get there quick as they have several thousand rounds of 9mm plus quite a bit of 45 and some other stuff. The ammo cabinet there is as stocked as I've seen it for probably the last year.

Bought a couple of boxes of .38spl at Academy today - lots of that calibre on the shelves and TONS of 9mm but no .40/.45. But even that has been coming in better lately.

Thank for Monarch - if the Serb's hadn't stepped up we would have been totally screwed the last year.

My local Gander Mountain had just about everything except .380. But I have been stockpiling that for a while. After all, we have three .380s to feed.

Plenty of .22 including CCI MiniMags, more 9mm (and more kinds of 9mm) than I have seen in quite a while.

By definition it cannot be gouging if people are buying it and there are other options (like Wal-Mart). Gander can put whatever price tag on their ammon that they like. If people pay the price, how can it be gouging if they could have bought it chaeper at Wal-Mart or online?

I've been getting email fliers for "sales and specials" on powder and ammo all week.

Here are two:
