Will a BB gun penetrate 12 gauge wire?

Do you have any friends who can fly an ultralight plane, preferably if they are really skinny.

Have your buddy do a fly-over on the wire, while you hang off the side swinging a chainsaw. I give it 50/50 odds of success/terrible accident.

OK...That was funny =)

Shooting the wire off with a BB gun is probably a bad idea. For the longest time my dad talked about using his rifle to shoot this tree off that he had in his yard because he didn't want to hire someone to cut it down. He came up will all kinds of hairbrained schemes to get that tree down on his own but none of them really worked. One involved using a 12 gauge to launche an arrow with a light line on it to the top of the tree so he could pull a heavier line up with it and use that to control the way the tree would fall. He wouldn't back down on that one so I took cover while he shot an arrow out of his old single barrel. It didn't blow up but it didn't work either. (It did make a good story though.)

He eventually caved in and just paid someone do it it fairly cheap.

If the wire got there in the first place then there has to be a way to get it down without risking unnecessary bodily harm.

I know a guy who used a .30-06 to drill a hole in a ceiling beam so he could mount a ceiling fan.

I'm sure you can imagine the rest of that story.

What a maroon! Funny thing is that he's quite smart and an ex-serviceman.

Just throw a weighted rope over it and pull it. It will break easily. It's not like its ACSR (aluminum clad steel reinforced) that will hold up a car.

Hi Selena,

I agree with your assessment of steel pellets (BBs) having a tendency to ricochet, which is why I would advocate for a lead pellet from a high-quality pellet gun. Much more energy delivered to the target, and a softer projectile which is less likely to ricochet.

I also think the squared-off shape of a pellet would make it much likely to ricochet than a round BB.

I will continue to go against the grain here, because I think it is a novel idea, and I would love to see it work. It is ultimately up to the shooter to decide whether it is safe to do this in his particular situation. But as to the fundamental question of whether a pellet gun would sever a 12 ga wire, I think that with multiple hits it would, especially if we're talking about a copper wire.

Hi KelVarnson,

Somehow I see the lion's share of the energy being absorbed in the softer lead pellet rather than the harder copper. Too be honest with you if I were still on the farm where I have a lab of sorts, I would set up a test model to try it out. It would be at the least an interesting experiment.

Speaking from practical experience... yes, lead pellets will flatten and deform around objects that copper bb's will just bounce off of. Long story of a mis-spent youth.

I second trying to get OVER the wire on the roof pole saw/pruner in hand, followed closely by the towable bucket lift, then the site-assembled scaffolding.

Nerd? I didn't get a chemical engineering degree because of my spelling! Curiousity is it's own reward.

Selema

I guess not, Selema! :)

OP: It sounds like the wire is under the eave of the building. Can you get it from above? Maybe rappel down from the roof?

.cheese. If it's only 25-30 feet, you don't need a bucket truck. Back on the first page, somebody had a picture of a 'snorkel lift' type of lift. There's actually a type of 1-man lift that's much more compact and can easily do 20-25 feet. I don't have a pic to send you but they're available everywhere down here in S FLA and are very safe once you set them with the removable outriggers. Nations Rents may be the way to go....

I'm really curious as to why neither end of this piece of wire is accessible.

If it were, the obvious removal method would be to tie the available end to your bumper, drink a lot of cough syrup, and then... ;)

Ok guys not to spoil your fun but have any of you relized that Cheese has NOT replied in the last 45 posts? I think he might have given up.:uhoh:

I don't think it matters anymore. This thread has taken on a life of it's own. I just hope it doesn't get locked for some reason before someone posts their results...

Hey Kel,

Instead of a pellet gun, 1/4 air line would work nicely. You will need a 1/4 ID tubing and solid rod for the receiver, standard brass brads would work for the lugs. Insert the pellet, connect to an air compressor and repeat as necessary. Just for giggle and grins I would use about 200- 250 psi as op pressure. Just to make up for the leakage of the quick and dirty construction. :(

Or... If you can find a large pulley or gear, weld on flutes, build a housing with an exit at about 15 degrees, (standing upright) attach a motor @ 3600 RPM or faster, introduce your pellets near the axle at mark 260 or 265 degrees you could have an "automatic" pellet thrower that would be good enough for the experiment.

I miss the shop at the farm.:(

that Japanese sports show where they run into doors hoping they have chosen the one made of paper?

I can't find anything on TV now. I want to watch an episode of that show.

My Dad & brother-in-law used a fishing pole to get a wire through the Y of a tree so Dad could get another band on his h.a.m. radio. Too bad I missed that. Might work better/safer than shooting an arrow though.

oh whoops.... sorry about that. I was just working on that sticky explosive device Mr. White suggested. ;)

jk.... I just figured that the thread has taken off and didn't want to spoil anybody's fun.

It's not a big deal. I called the painter today. He'll be here next week. It's his problem now. I have other - more important - things to worry about... like putting up holiday lights and getting ready to shovel food in my mouth next week.
