Will the new M&P 45 top the XD-45?

Yeah, I was unaware that anyone had declared the XD the second coming of the 1911.

If you're asking if the M&P will be good, the answer is "probably, yes". If you're asking if it will be better than the XD, my answer would be "define better."

Well I consider the XD series the crown jewel under $500, just my opinion:neener:. We'll see if the M&P can mount a challenge to the XD in sales, as the XD-45 is becoming hugely popular in short order. 13+1 in a 45, with a grip frame that will fit the vast majority of hands = major feat.

of the double stack 45's I've shot, I do think the XD 45 (in particular, the 5" model) is one of the best out there. Much better then the Glock21. Have not had the pleasure of shooting any of the M&P's yet, but would love to.

Oh, I think the XD-45 is good, maybe even great. The 4" model I shot felt good in the hand and had a decent trigger. The 13+1 of .45ACP in a decent grip is a stunner. It's just a little early for a coronation. ;)

I'm curious what the M&P will be like. Switchable backstraps should make it more likely to feel good in the hand to more people, but we'll have to see. The M&P triggers I've seen are better than the XD triggers, once they've been smoothed out through use. But, that is subjective.

If they shoot like the M&P 9 and M&P 40, it will find a home in my safe. As for better, that is a subjective statement. One even said that it was better than the G21 - well, I find it hard to believe that any platform can out do the Glock in reliability - aesthetics is another story.

Those M&Ps are the best shooting pistols that I've ever shot, and I own several Glocks and Sigs and prefer my M&P9 to everything else.

Well, the M&P is more ergonomic, more pleasant to shoot, better looking and has a more solid feel than the XD45. And you can get it with OR without passive and active safeties. The only category it loses in is mag capacity. I expect the M&P could surpass the XD in sales over the next few years.

Waiting for proof, not supposition. The Glock 21 is proven - do this with any other handgun.

Too bad the 21 grip is so large. The XD-45 fits my medium hands better.

Right now the only thing the S&W has is marketing. Since when do you jusrt believe ads? I personally kow of two Glock 17 with over 300,000 rounds through them that are still working just fine.

Talk is cheap. Let's see the proof.

i shot the MP45. and i wasnt impressed. to me it had a bad trigger feel. seemed excessively loose, and it wasnt accurate. and while it was a rental gun, its Smith and Wessons indoor range rental. and they use it to try to convince people to buy said model. so i dont believe it was abused or neglected

Both of these are real good guns, the XD-45 just seems to sell a lot more because there are more models and accessories out there for a buyer. S&W needs to be more proactive in marketing and development and they should do very well. The M&P is much more of a shooter but they seem to be a bit inconsistent out of the box.

I seem to recall alot of early owners of the M&P's reporting problems with their guns, but I seem to see that less these days, and assuming they have the bugs worked out these days they will probably become very popular if for no other reason than that Smith tends to end up getting alot of police contracts and such, I think partially because it is an american company.

I own an M&P9, M&P9c, and an M&P40.

With that being said, I have held off on buying the M&P45 for several different reasons:

1.) All models I have looked at look used.
I know this sounds rediculous, given the whole "a gun is a tool" thing, but by golly I like my tools to look new. All of the 45s I've looked at had a tarnished looking extractor. I didn't care for that.

2.) Magazine capacity
There are other options available in a polymer 45 that have a higher magazine capacity. If I wanted a low-capacity 45, I'd carry a lightweight 1911.

3.) Price
I think the M&P45 is a little over priced right now. Perhaps they are trying to make up for selling some of their other M&Ps for dirt cheap ($399, as of recently in my area).

4.) Grip size
The grip simply didn't feel as good as the rest of my M&Ps. This being said, I did not have the opportunity to experiment with the other inserts.

As of right now, if I was forced to buy a polymer 45 in this class (exluding HK), I would go with the XD, with a tip of the hat to capacity.

I agree with gudel that the grip safety is a gimmick.

XD .45_two thumbs up-Great gun!

I have two SA-XD .45's one service model and one tactical. I looked int o getting an MP in .45 but settled on a .40 cal instead. The mag capacity was only 10 on the MP .45:( The one thing I think the SW might have over the XD is the grip. I really Love the grip on the MP. The XD is the most accurate polymer pistol I have ever shot. Easy to take down, not one issue with FTF, FTE, jams, etc. of any kind. I have owned my XD's for over a year now, so very reliable. I expect the MP will be reliable too. If the MP had a 12 or13 round mag on their .45, I would have given it a try.

The Best to All!

I like XD's and I like M&P's. I own a couple of each. I don't own a M&P-45 yet though. I could live with the fact that it holds three less rounds than my XD but the current price seems kinda high to me. $130 higher than my 9mm, why?

As I may have written a few times;), I'm very pleased with my MP9C and would have no problem buying a .45. I've shot a XD in .40 as a rental but it was sort of ho-hum, neither fish nor fowl, whereas I took to the rental MP9 full size like a duck to water. The only advantage I can see of the XD over the MP is three more rounds in the magazine, but eleven cannonballs is still plenty. :)
