I can't document this, but I heard the grip safety was primarily added to get around Glock's patents and avoid an infringment suit. Has anybody else heard this?
Definitely not true because adding an extra feature does not allow one to avoid a patent.
For example, say you had a patent on a chair. I decide to make rocking chairs (your chair with curved wood added on the bottom). My rocking chair would infringe your patent.
I think an earlier post on this thread mentioned that the grip safety was added because solidiers needed it to avoid ADs while walking through thick brush (and they didn't want to add a true manual safety).
