Getting together the final stuff I need to shoot - kind of confused about all of the cleaning rods and jags' diameters and thread sized etc.

Wondering if someone can tell me if this kit will work for both .36s and .44 cap and ball pistols (2 have 8" barrel lengths).

Otherwise can someone provide a link to a better set that can be used for both calibers?

Here is a link: http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleani...istol-cleaning-sku100012406-57450-119732.aspx

Here are specifics of the kit:

100-012-405WB
.38/9mm - .40/10mm - .45 Cal 8" Competition Pistol Cleaning

Mfr Part: CMULTI

C-MULTI Kit Includes:

8”working length stainless micro-polish swivel handle rod
Spear tip jags for .357/.38cal/9mm/10mm/.40cal/.45cal
Nylon bore brush fits .38-.45 cal.
Muzzle guard
Brass patch holder
Starter sample of 2 & 1/4” square 100% cotton flannel patches
¼ ounce of 1-Step Cleaner and Lubricant dropper bottle

Thanks for your help!

Thanks splattergun - i am aware to avoid petroleum products - but I will reread that link again since i am new to cap and ball.

Now I am thinking it would be better to get better quality rod - but i would like to get one that can be used on both .36s and .44s -

Anyone know if the carbon fiber ones do not require a bore protector? Also the jags and brushes for Tipton seem to come only in rifle sizes for .375 diameter (.36) so i am a bit confused which ones i should get if i go that route.

Any suggestions? Or other options? Thanks

Don't overthink this stuff.

All you need is one rod with a swivel handle, two brushes. (One for each caliber) and a jag. Add a bag of good patches, a can of Ballistol, a toothbrush, and go shooting.

Get a Treso Pistol Loading Rod in 5/16" diameter with 10x32 threads. Then get two tapered jags for the 5/16" rod and 10x32 threads in .36 and .45 caliber, a couple of bore mops in each caliber (I use them to clean chambers mostly) and a couple of brushes in each caliber. You can get them all from Track of the Wolf for far less than the thing on that Brownell's link.

If you like, send me an email and I'll send you an excel spreadsheet for beginners for your consideration. [email protected]
