I'm new to reloading and know nothing. I do not plan to get into it heavy. Just something to do mostly,
I have a couple Lee reloading kits, 38 spl and 9 mm. I mostly plan on loading 38 spl and probably some 9mm. Mostly target and maybe some xtp later.
I've been told Winchester 231 would be a good powder for both the 38 and 9. I'd like to keep the cost down so one powder for both would be great.
What you think, Winchester 231 ok?

By saying W231/HP38 are the same, it is meant that it is literally the same power, from the same factory, in the same bottles, only with different labels on the outside.

You may read some message threads on the internet talking about how people substitute one powder for another. Just be aware that powders are generally not simply interchangeable. This case is one of the exceptions where it actually is the exact same powder with different labels.

Good choice. I recently switch to Titegroup for 9mm. The good side is that it makes it even cheaper since you use very little per load. That is also why you should not do this. It is too easy to double charge the round. I have to be very careful, but I have also been reloading for a few decades now, so I am mostly aware of the risks.

I have used a lot of W231 and it was good to work with.

231 works well in a lot of pistol calibers it also has been the easiest to find during powder shortages. I use win 231 in several calibers that I once used unique powder but it was always out of stock but not win 231. I have switched some powders because of availability. I dropped unique and varget always out of stock.

Two thumbs up for 231 and a big belly laugh for this, “

You know what they say about the best laid plans 😂🤣

I'd put W231 on my cereal if it weren't for the chance of spontaneous tooth chipping. 38 Special, 9mm, 357 Magnum, 30-30 Winchester (cast target rounds); it's one of my favorite powders for pistols and rifles. It's not a powder for heavy loads in 357 Magnum, but they're definitely beyond a 38 Special.

Yep, the consensus is, good choice. W231 is the second powder I purchased, first was Bullseye. Pounded out quite a few 38 Specials with W231 and my Lee Loader. 1970 and I still use it for my handgun reloads (32 ACP up to 45 Colt)...
