I'm way into a .22 phase right now, and am running various ammo types and brands through a new CZ 452 and a relatively new stainless Marlin 60.
I just stumbled on some Winny Xpert and would like to know the consensus around here. Good? Bad? So-so ?
And yeah, yeah, I know I can get this info over at rinfirecentral, but i've been pestering those guys enough lately.
'sides...they's cool, and all, but you boys is my peeps.:D

They work for me. Use them on ground squirrells. The huge hollow point is just as effective on them as my 17HMR.

xperts can be bad, but mostly they are good. the only bulk ammo that should be bought and tested, is anything by winny or feddy, all other bulk ammo is to be rejected, including cci.

I used Winchester SuperX in my match .22 (10/22 Ruger) for years and still do and swear by it. With prices going sky high ...about $36 for the stuff as of late..I have tried the Xpert and love it! Haven't had any problems and it shoots pretty much the same as SuperX in my match gun!

Gunshops generally sell it for $23-$28 bucks....but guess what? Walmart has the stuff for $12.95.....till the main distribution warehouse runs out and they get a new shipment from Winchester. I bought 10 bricks so I'm not worried!
I've posted this before, but 80 rounds of Xpert, no wind at 50 yards offhand..........with my match rifle!

My experience with bulk .22 rimfire!

Federal Bulk is very reliable in my many rimfires. I liked it better last year @$8.96:rolleyes:

Remington Golden Bullets are the dirtiest and least consistent or should I say consistently inconsistent.

Winchester Xperts present accuracy problems and are dirtier than most

Winchester (new) 333, I've yet to shoot.

Winchester Dynapoints are slower but very accurate. Unfortunately they went from $10.00/500ct to $29.00/500ct. Shame on somebody!

Federal Auto Match is OUTSTANDING and can produce results rivaling very
respectable and expensive target ammo such as Wolf Target.

Thanks for the replies, fellers. I hope to shoot a few of these Xperts this Saturday, so i'll know if I want to stock up on more.
And to add a little info.......those Winchester 333's are great. Me and a couple friends all like them over the bulk Fed in my model 60, CZ 452, and my buddys two 10/22's.
From what I read at rimfirecentral, lots of guys give thumbs up to the CCI bulk ammo, but can't confirm or deny personally.
And the consensus over there is also that much of the Remington ammo sucks.:(
And though lots of guys like the Federal auto-match,we're finding it shoots sloppy and inconsistently.YMMV.
Thanks ! M.

my Model 60 loves Win Xperts 32 grain lead HP's. They shoot good. For hunting or woods carry I use CCI Mini-Mags in 40 grain Round Nose or 36 grain HP's.

I have shot Federal Bulk, and the gun does not like them. I have shot CCI Stinger and Velocitor, but the Mini-Mags and Xperts are great.

My Browning Buckmark Bullseye eats 'em up with nary a burp. I've not found anything it doesn't like, however.

Ditto with my U22 Neos. Some guns will shoot anything.

My opinion on the stuff is 'meh.'

I have found the Xperts (and any and all Remington) to be crap in both my Marlin Model 60 and my 452. I like CCI best (if there's a more accurate round than a mini-mag in my CZ, I don't shoot well enough to be able to tell) and shoot Federal bulk most. I need to try that 333.

(UPDATE) I ran a few mag loads of Xpert through my stainless Marlin 60, and was more than happy with it. Consistant, respectable groups,(within reason) no big flyers or PFFFT's. Definately better than the Federal 550 bulk.
Then, after shooting some of the CCI standard velocity rounds I got for my CZ 452, I tried some of the Xperts through the 452, and damned if they didn't group as well as the CCI's did !!!
In fact,2 of the 3 best groups I shot this session were not from the CCI's ( which the CZ likes) but from the bulk Winnys,as well as THE best single group.Go figure.
I went and cleaned out one local Wally World, and will soon scarf up more to ammo-can away.

In the 452 . . .

the bore is tight. Try pulling a snake through the 452 and then the 60, you'll see what I'm talking about. Because it is tight, and you force the bullet into the chamber with the bolt, it shoots most ammo well. If you get too big a diameter (>.224) it has a little trouble. Most remington stuff falls in this category. Federal and CCI are usually a little less diameter (~.223). Federal seems to use a little harder alloy, but the softer CCI seems to swell and fill the rifling a little better. Winchester Xpert and Dynapoints (haven't put the mic to them) look really slim. The smaller diameter is probably why your 452 likes them. Only one of my FIVE 452s, actually one 453, likes Winchester, though. They seem to be pretty consistant box to box, and, like you, I haven't had a lot of "pffts" (I liked that). I've shot at least 10 cartons through my Kimber .22 Conversion (won't feed big diameter stuff).

I know it wasn't the question, but since you're a 452 shooter, Federal Champions seem to shoot the most consistantly through the 9 452s shot by me, my dad, and my buddies. The Federal 550 Cartoned Copper Washed HPs and CCI Mini-mags are a damn close second. CCI Minimags sized to .223 give me my best groups . . . one slightly ragged hole at 25, one just slightly more ragged hole at 50. That's in my 453 and 452 Americans. This is for the cheaper stuff, of course. They all love Eley.

Now that I've read myself type and since you'd answered your question before I started . . . you're not going wrong with the Xperts . . . they stink in shotgun stuff, though.

Its good but if you like getting short changed....

It's reliable ammo, when I took my nephews out shooting and towards the end we had to split the last brick and we counted and re-counted (kinda reminds me of the Florida recount) it was short 31 rounds. So I told my nephews to step aside and let me recount, (I taught the older ones were trying to pull a quick one over the younger ones) dang they counted right. We just blasted thru three bricks, gotta pull out the digital scale and check the stuff in the safe, BAM...were being short changed fellows.

I have some and the bullet wobbles around on the case. I have had them for two years though and they might not be like that anymore. They alway shot good but I didn't think a bullet should wobble on the case.

Shot some 333 just yesterday for the first time. Had a few jams in the Kel Tec SU22.

They were FTF's and the bullets were bent in half.

I like the Federal 550 bricks myself. I do have some Xpert too but havent shot it yet.

All of it feeds fine in the single shot .22 LOL

I shoot the Federal bulk packs, very reliable and pretty accurate in my 22/45. I did buy a Winchester (333) pack, but haven't shot them yet.

planetnebur

I have often wondered about that with bulk pack ammo; makes me glad I usually buy .22s by the brick. Of course, that's when I can still find any left on the shelf.
