Your choice may be dictated more by what you can get.

While any of those rounds will work, the Silvertip is an "old school" design that trades off a degree of penetration ("'Google' '1986 Miami FBI shootout'") for expansion. The Remington makes up for the "low tech" bullet by driving it faster. The Gold Dot is a thoroughly modern design.

Can you get the Federal 9BP? This is also an "old school" design (conventional 115gr JHP at standard pressure) but has a reputation for reliability and accuracy and there are no "horror stories" about its effectiveness.

The Federal "Clasic" Hi Shok 115gr JHP, AKA the Federal 9BP. Its a fine defensive round if you don't want a +P. It has been noted for it's accuracy and round bullet profile that will feed relibally in about any weapon that will feed ball.

There is also a Law Enforcement +P+ version (Federal 9BPLE), that is the standard by which allother 9mm stopping power is judged. Used for over 10yrs by the US Border Patrol and countless local Law Enforcement agencies, it is well known as a man stopper. These days it is quite common on the Law Enforcement trade in/surplus market here in the states.

This is where I buy mine.

Ammoman and ammunition to go both carry it on and off depending on the surplus market. Sometimes you can also find it on Gun Broker but it's expensive.

rklessdriver would be also intersted in the law enforcment version of the Federal 9b but It seems that they aren't available here in austria. I can only get the standard pressure rounds. Myby an importer but order some for me, but this would only possible with an large scale order..

Out of the ones you listed I would pick gold dots. They stay together and expand very well. Federal 9bp is also a good and less expensive round. A couple of other good cheapos are winchester usa 115gr jhp and remington umc 115gr jhp. They are not quite premium but very decent jhps to fit a budget.

Gold Dot 124gr

the copper is moleculerly bonded to the lead, meaning no core-jacket separations from shooting through intermediate barriers like windshields.

I only use the time-tested Winchester ranger 127 grain +p+ in 9mm. In my opinion, it's the best 9mm cartridge on the market. The second best is the Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +p.

Remington Golden Sabers 124 hollow points in my 5906. They expand great. Recently shot some filled gallon jugs, 9mm and 45acp fmj just punched right through, not much reaction from the jug. The 124gr 9mm Golden Sabers, made the jug jump in the air as if it was kicked. Punched a hole the same size as the 45acp, and instead of passing though and leaving 2 similar size holes, it punched a panel out the back. Very impressive, will have to post some pics.

Any of them will do the job if you place the bullet well. Worry more about if they are reliable in you particular gun and your ability to place them in the vitals under stress than which particular bullet you use.

I buy what's on sale so I can get more practice with them.

Thx for the great infos. In the meantime I have baught my baretta and I have allready used it the range and it's a great pistol. I have also ordered some 124 grain gold dots and some golden sabers to test which of these loads will work best in my gun. If i can locate some winchester rangers I will also order them.

I'm willing ot bet that your beretta will eat all of them without a belch. Good, reliable pistol those.

@mec That's sounds great. And I was able to finde some ranger t 127 grain rounds, I have also oredered a box for testing.

Capt.America. Mentioned the new Hornady FTX.

I prefer the Hornady load in my RAMI, but use Hornady XTP or
Gold Dots in my other guns.

Silvertips are old technology, but still better than ball ammo.

Yes, the critical defense ammo sounds interesting, but I think that the se stuff is more suitable for short barrel guns , I wonder if they work properly in an full size handgun, like my baretta. And it would also be possible to get some hornady xtp rounds..

From the choices you posted, I'd pick Gold Dots. Great ammo, used by law enforcement. Can't go wrong.

If you could get them, I'd also recommend Federal HST, Corbon DPX, Winchester Ranger T's, and Remington Goldensabers. All of those are EXTREMELY reliable. You would be well served by all of those.

I carry the RA9124TP in all my CZ's, once these are gone I will buy the new Winchester bonded PDX1. Mike

Would you all go with the gold dots 124 gr out of a 3 inch barrel? I was planning on getting a springfield XD subcompact and the barrel is only 3 inches and I was wondering if the gold dots will expand properly out of it or if there is another type I should get.

Thanks!

Thx for the answers. @EHL Yes I am also the opineon that the federal hst, corbon dpx and winchester rangers are great rounds. I wasn't able to locate the dpx stuff here in austria, but it would be possible to order the federal hst and the winchester rangers. I have already orederd some 127 grain rangers and I think I will try to get some hst rounds for testing too.

And speer offers special loadings for short barreled pistols, which will work great in your gun Xyas

The 124 grn Gold Dot is widely used here by the police and has a great street record. That being said the Federal HST, Corbon DPX, Remington Golden Sabers, and the Winchester Rangers are all new design bullets and should work roughly the same.

The Silvertip and the various other "older" hollowpoints will still work but have a higher chance of coming apart and not penetrating as much.
