Hello Everyone!
I am new here and wondered if anyone had any advice for me.
I have a gun permit hearing today in 3 hrs. i have been through 1 year of the first meeting with the gun permit office, then another meeting with a trooper who came to my home for the interview, then had a meeting at the sheriffs station and interviewed then i got this letter to meet with the judge clerk for yet another interview.
I had no idea one person had to go through this much to get to use something which is in our constitution.
its amazing how even with EVERY person on my application who was a referred person was a police officer. all 4 of them... and yet still.... anyway just wondered if anyone had this kind of meeting in the wny area or even near them that can give me an idea about what they are going to ask.
I have been around guns my entire life yet have to jump through hoops for over a year to get to use them.
I was told i have to meet with the judge clerk, not even the judge.

I live in niagara falls and really am looking forward to getting my permit
for shooting at the range that is close to my home as well as putting all
my dads guns on my permit to pass them down to my daughters someday.

Have no clue what he is going to ask... anyone know ??

thanks a million for the help..

April

I am sorry that you did not get a reply in the time requested... but what was the result? Are you "in"?

Have you yet joined the SCOPE and NYSRA?

Good luck to you!

disgusting

even in the PRK you don't have to beg the police for your Constitutional rights.

GlockGirl4,this is truly sad what you've had to go through to this point.Reading your account makes me very angry, and the fact that not only NY, but several other states makes their citizens stoop to the level of begging peasants, is about as un-American as it can get.
This disgusting repressiveness against the inalienable right to self defense in these Stalinist enclaves is something that has to be quickly brought to an end.
I wish you the best, and hope that you have a positive result from these sadists.

Hopefully at some point in the near future, NY's gun laws will be challenged under Heller. Since they've made it illegal to even OWN a handgun without a permit and permits are "may issue", I think a very good case can be made that they are in violation of the 2nd amendment.

The Largest problem with the NY Gun laws is NY doesn't have preemption. Every county in the state has a different policy.

On the flip side of that for folks in the more conservative counties like myself, we are lucky that the anti gun BS that comes out of the southeastern counties doesn't affect us.

well i went.. and they approved my permit ONLY AS TARGET practice, i can take it to the range and home, that is it!!
i can apply in 2 yrs after i have had it and they MIGHT let me get it to carry concealed. it makes me so upset that the bad guys can get probation for having a gun, but a stay at home mother cant carry until she dont do anything wrong with the permit to the range and back for 2yrs ... UGHHH...

That's only because begging for your constitutional rights is pointless here in the PRK...

Seriously, the carry situation is terrible. Loaded open carry is mostly illegal, unloaded open carry is almost impossible in urban areas, and the CCW permit process is hopelessly corrupt.

It sounds like NY residents aren't much better off... sorry to hear about the restrictions, GlockGirl4. That stinks.

I think I recall a recent thread (either here or on APS) about a guy who HAD a NY carry permit, and upon renewal it was downgraded to something similar to yours. My recollection is that the judge was then told by other judges he couldn't do that. I'm not sure if this might relate to your situation, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

GG4, thanks for the follow up. The use on your permit is restricted, but at least it is a first start. I am sympathetic to your disgust at New York being a 'criminal friendly' state. I heard of a case in NYC where a proven violent criminal on probation killed a police office. The DA refused to request the death penalty because he might not be re-elected. :barf: That was one more reason to vamanoose to Texas after graduation. The whole state is an insult to the dignity of the upright and hard-working.

I went to school at UB and used to shoot trap, sporting, and skeet here

It is a bit of a drive from Niagra, but there is a bar and grill and people are pretty friendly. You may be restricted in the trust and transport of a handgun :banghead: but you can drive around with all shotguns you want, all day long. Be sure to join the SCOPE and NYSRA. Go Bulls! Mr. K.

Be sure to check out the services page of the TSC for pistol range.

I would check that. NYS permits are valid for life or until revoked.

I kinda think that it would be nice for people who enjoy guns and shooting to move out of any place that doesn't allow it, making the gun friendly states even more so and putting a cloud over those that aren't.

GlockGirl:

Check with the Niagara County Sportsmen's Association on Lower Mountain Rd. They may have an attorney who is a member and familiar with NYS and Niagara County laws. Better yet, join the club its a great place to shoot and meet fellow gun enthusiasts. Niagara County used to be one of the better ones 20 years ago when I lived there. I had to employ an attorney to get my carry permit approved even then. It helped that I was a business owner and carried cash to the bank (hint-hint) It also helps to make friends with one of the County judges and maybe help with ($$) their re-election campain.

I solved most of these problems by moving permanently to Florida. If gun laws worked then Buffalo and Niagara Falls would be safe to walk around at night, right?

they approved my permit ONLY AS TARGET practice
Reminder: In NY, your permit can be revoked by the issuing judge for absolutely any reason (including none) at any time (including now); he's telling you he'll pull it if you carry for reasons other than practice. The "restriction" is not, technically speaking, legally binding. To wit: if you disobey the restriction and the judge finds out, the permit may be revoked, but you are not criminally liable (long established NY case law).

BTW: IANAL.

Wow, thats tough. I live 80 mile east of where you are and never had an interview with anyone about my permit. Took the class, got printed, photoed and waited about four months. Licensed to carry. Things ARE better in Chautauqua County. Never heard of such stuff except for NYC and Nassau County

FWIW:
When in NY, my permit was similarly restricted (no interview even). Word is the issuing judge was later forced out over involvement in drug crime (guess he didn't want competition from CCW-ing residents).
Transferred it to Monroe county, where they stripped the restriction without request or comment.
Didn't transfer it to Genesee county, where I knew restrictions would be added without request or comment.

I like GA now.

I can only speak for myself and my wife. 2 years ago I applied and received my full unrestricted nys pistol permit. It took 59 days from my application date to the date I received it. I only had a brief (15 min) interview with a local detective. My wife applied a year later and received her full unrestricted permit in just over 2 months and she only had a phone interview! Historically Niagara County has had a GREAT rep as 2nd ammendment friendly! I am truly shocked at Glockgirls treatment!!!

I used to live in Westchester Co. All the same interview requirements PLUS these two gems:

1) All firearms you registered needed to have a spent casing supplied to for the NY Ballistics database (this was a touch difficult since you wern't technically allowed to transport the firearm after you moved to NY, or discharge it in your home (obviously) so I was unsure where to get the casings.

2) If you registered more than X number of handguns (I think 3 or 5 was the magic number) the police could automatically search your residence.

SC is fantastic by comparison.

It depends so much on where you live in NY as permits are issued by each county, some more metropolitan counties very restrictive other more rural not. I received mine in a rural county where a lot of hunting still takes place and it was fill out the paper work, about a 45 day wait and issued as a full carry permit.

Yeah, I just went through the same load of BS to get my NY permit. Makes me sick.
What's really absurd is that if I cross lake Champlain over to VT (about a ten minute drive and 15 minutes on the ferry) anybody who can legally own a firearm can carry a concealed pistol WITHOUT any kind of permit.
I really, really, freakin hate this cesspool. :fire: There's a reason a lot of us refer to it as "The People's Republik of NY". :barf:
