BATON ROUGE, La. - A 23-year-old woman killed two fellow students in a classroom at a vocational college Friday, then killed herself, police said.

The women apparently were shot in their seats in the second-floor classroom at Louisiana Technical College, Baton Rouge Sgt. Don Kelly said. About 20 people were in the room at the time, he said.

Officers ran into the building within four minutes of the first 911 call, which came at 8:36 a.m., Kelly said.

“There was mass pandemonium, people running,” he said. “One officer — the first into the classroom — told me he could still smell gunpowder.”

Police withheld the names of the shooter and the victims, ages 21 and 26, until their families could be notified.

The school — one of two LTC campuses in Baton Rouge and dozens around the state — offers classes in a dozen subjects including early childhood education, practical nursing, drafting and welding.

School administrators and campus police did not immediately return calls or e-mails.

Louis Davis, who said he was taking an automobile technology class Friday morning, said a teacher told the students to stay in class because there had been an incident, without adding details. Students had to stay in their classrooms for about two hours and were briefly questioned by police before being released for the day, he said.

Classes were canceled through Tuesday, and tentatively scheduled to resume Wednesday, said Jim Henderson, vice president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.

“This is a tragic day for Baton Rouge, when you come to a learning institution ... and become the victim of a violent crime,” Mayor Kip Holden said at the scene.

Gun free zone, as usual.

And under the Code of Conduct of the University:

http://www.lctcsenews.com/assets/docs/LTC-Policies/SA229_061807.pdf

Any student who commits or attempts to commit any acts, such as, but not limited to the following, will be subject to disciplinary proceedings:

229.6.7 Unauthorized use or possession of fire arms, ammunition, or other dangerous weapons, substances, or materials on the campus;

That's some fine rulemakin' there, Lou.

Because of course having a firearm on campus is against the rules. That will sure keep people from getting shot on campus!

This appears to be the most recent in what has been a spate of shootings across the nation this past week.

Ugh. This is sure making guns look great. There have been an awful lot of shootings in the last week.

I don't think having a ccw would have helped in this particular case anyway..sounds like she just shot two people then offed herself right after.

I dont understand how having a firearm would prevent you from getting shot in this situation. If I'm sitting in class, the absolute last thing Im expecting is for another student to pull out a gun and shoot me.

Maybe knowing people might be armed, might make the shooter think twice, but she killed herself, so I doubt the shooter is concerned about their own well-being. They just want to hurt other people as a way to assert some kind of power.

Events such as this are solid evidence the liberals are right! Since such actions are already forbidden by a multitude of laws and school regulations we must enact more laws and regulations to make it illegal to ignore the previous laws and regulations. Given enough laws and regulations, surely people would eventually change their behavior. Or not.

Maybe the ostritch's defensive position really doesn't work?

This doesn't sound like a random shooting. Sounds like a vendetta. A targeted murder/suicide. We'll see.

In this particular situation I have to agree...assuming I was the first target. Now once I was alerted that might be a different matter.

You're right - a CCW might not save me if I was the first target, but it might if I was the second or subsequent target. I'd at least have a fighting chance.

The lawful obey the law, the unlawful ignore it. No such thing as Gun Control, it is about controling People. The last time I needed to go into a No-Gun-Zone (took a relative to the local Indian Health Clinic), the place was guarded by a native rent-a-cop busy talking on his phone inside his cubicle. I retreived my weapon and waited outside until said relative was finished inside. Nothing spooks me like amillion signs that show a gun with the red circle and red line through it. On the bright side, there were plenty of chairs inside one could use to throw at a potential gun wielding lunatic.

Female mass murderers are rare. It probably was some kind of lesbian love triangle that just happened to erupt in a classroom because that was an opportune place to find ambush both victims together in the same place. Sort of like the guy who shot his wife at the school the other day. It really had nothing to do with school, it just happened that school was the place where the killer knew the victim would be at a certain time.
Just guessing though.

What a tragedy, more deaths in a "gun free zone".

I can hear the brady bunch now, "It was the gun's fault!!!, renew the assault weapons ban!!!, ban CCW liscenses!!!"

Thats the trouble, if you suggest that a CCW permit holder could have stopped it they counter with "having a shootout in the college would have made it worse!!! just bury your head in the sand and hope you are spared"
