Yep - none of the above, especially not a semi.
Always a revolver, with the first one up as snake-shot.
And it depends on where I am, brown bear or black bear country.

Black bear country - this one
S&W Model 66-4 4" .357mag.

Brown bear country - this one
S&W Model 629-4 3" .44mag.

Well for BIG bears mine is close:

629-1 4 inch with El Paso 1942 holster and a good knife.

"...and a good knife." [Deaf Smith]

That knife is about the size that Gene Moe used (a Buck 110 folding hunter) to kill an 800 lb grizzly. Mr. Moe, now in his 80s, was 69 when he killed the bear.

Why cousin Smith, (with your considerable experience, skills, and, good looks) you could, without a doubt, grin a bear into compliance...

As for me, I'll defer to a S&W 22-4, loaded with 45 Supers, come to think of it, they will work in a (slightly modified) 1911 too.

Another vote for a medium-framed 357. My "walk in the woods" gun is a 4" S&W 19-3 loaded with +P handloads.

I really like a Glock 20 or 40 (10mm) as a woods gun, and I'm not a Glock fan.
That said, 15rds of hot 10mm will do a lot for one in the woods.

After that, I would likely go with a .357 on the east coast.

Wow. I'm surprised at how much of a run away it's been for the Blackhawk given the longer barrel, single action, and five shot restriction without the transfer bar. Even if I take away the votes where people picked it, but specified a different size/caliber, it's still pretty impressive. (Yeah. I know. I probably should have put the details directly in the poll choices.)

And to whomever voted for the LCP and PK380, please know that I hate you. ;)

No doubt yours would work well, cousin Engineer!

So does my 3 inch 625-1, and I also use .45 Supers!

Dang I love those N frames!

I recently acquired an Alaskan 44, so that is my new woods gun. There are some big critters around here. For years, before the 44 I carried a SP101. The Alaskan is quite comfortable in a Simply Rugged sourdough.

The much awaited G40 long slide with cut for optic. Magazine holds 15 cartridges. Nothing else comes close. Federal cartridge makes fearsome hunting load in 10x25. The 10mm is back after long dormant period.

My Ruger BK in .45 colt/acp was my trail gun for many years, I always felt safe with it. First round CCI shot shell followed by 4 rds of heavy duty ammo .45 colt. My so-in-law always liked it ,he now carries it. I now carry a S&W Governor loaded with .410 #6 and 5 rds of HD 45 colt. My reload is a full-moon clip of .45 acp 230 JHP.
Snakes and feral hogs are what we are worried about were we are.

Glock 20, 200 gr nosler jhp, and a healthy dose of blue dot. I've never needed anything more or wanted anything less.

I've searched through the existing threads, but I thought I'd take a different approach and make a poll.
Apparently you didn't search very hard, and your approach is no different than most of the other useless threads on the same topic.

If you had searched or really wanted to take a different approach, you'd have filled in all the blanks first.

Geo? Where are these woods? A woods gun in Alaska has very different requirements than a woods gun in Oklahoma.

Activity? What are you doing in the woods? A backpacker has very different needs than a day-hiker or someone meandering their property.

How long? How much time are you in these woods? Spending a month or two without resupply is going to get different results than for someone just out for a stroll.

Mental stability? Are you just a regular guy or girl, or do you believe the entire animal population of these woods are out to get you? There are people who will not leave the paved surface without a full combat load-out, so if you expect to get into a drawn-out gunfight with nature and/or meth lab security troops, you probably won't accept the answers from the regular folks.

SO far 8 of the 39 responses include K frame, Model 19 model 66 as personal choices and some of those did post something else on the survey because that was not offered as a choice.

I had a 6 inch -19 I used as a car and brief case gun for a bit. It was a bit much for wearing on the belt in a car situation for day in and day out though.

I was just telling the wife how sad it was that I have no .357 K frame at the moment. She said if I could find that paralyzed young orthodontist that was just struck and mad so by a national brand name soda company drunken truck driver with repeated offenses and warnings from the company that needs a lawyer real bad I could pick out one this afternoon.

Sorry S&W, the L frame just ain't the same.

If someone else does a later count remember not to include me twice.

Why on Gods green earth did you leave out the Ruger GP100 . In any barrel length that suits your needs it is an EXCELLENT woods gun.

I didn't see it listed, but a 1911 is a goody.
A .44 Special Blackhawk would be my choice, also.

I just handled a 3" Wiley Clap edition Ruger GP 100 that would serve wonderfully for the use the OP has in mind. Reasonable light, trim, rugged and quick handling. Packed in a good holster it'd be a dandy.

When going 'light', as in hiking in the Crockett National Forrest I use this rig below.

Only now my 3 inch 'Canadian' GP100 is DAO.

When I 1st moved to Colorado in 1976, I hiked around pretty naked. Then I ran into a bear, running the other way. OK! So, then I started carrying a compound bow, just to see if i could shoot something to bring home and, maybe protect myself.
Shot an elk a year or two later and thought that was reason enough to carry that around and then, while bow hunting elk, I had a cougar walk up my back trail while I was sitting in a little pile of rocks, hoping for an elk to come along. After that, I started carrying a S&W model 19. Just in case.
Then, over the years, I had another bear show up. Traded my .357 for a Ruger .41 Mag.
Loved that gun but too heavy to be carrying around just camping and got in my way when carrying my hunting gear in season.
Now I carry a Ruger Bearcat .22. It puts meat in the pot and scares off any of the critters I've had to confront in the woods since 1989 in Colorado, at least, and fits on my belt, crossdraw even when I have a backpack on.
