I have owned three of them. I now can afford guns I like better, so I wouldn't buy one now. Notice I didn't say "better guns", just guns I "like" better.

I admire the Hi-Point Firearms Co. There is a niche in the market for their product and they fill it nicely.

I'd buy the Oprah magazine if circumstances dictated.

Ordinarily, I don't think I would. I don't have one on my list, don't plan to buy one, don't see a need for one at the moment.

If I was short of money, and needed a gun right then, sure. They have a reputation for, AFAIK, staying together when fired. Not too pretty or too lightweight, but they can work, and some work well.

Why not? I don't expect it to do too much, but for the money, it would be decent, and work in a pinch if I needed it to.

Plus the ones I've shot in the past have been as accurate as guns 5 or 6 times more expensive (though they do seem to not like hollowpoints)

I put yes, if it was all I could afford it would serve the self defense role just fine. Happily I can afford a better gun, but still would never knock somebody who owned one as it is a valid choice.

I do own a hi-point carbine and except in the first 50 rounds while it was loosening up a little or I had the mags loaded wrong or something. It has not had any sort of hiccup in over 2000 normal rounds afterwards.

Hi Points

These are BUGS (big ugly guns), but they're accurate and have good customer service. I've got one that I bought when I first wanted to try out 40 caliber ammo, and I've got no complaints. The grips sucked, but I bought a rubber sleeve to fix that, and it's dependable. I don't shoot it a lot any more, because I have other guns too, but no complaints with Hi Point.

I've toyed with the idea of getting one of the 9mm carbines too, but for right now, I'll settle for my Saiga carbine to provide high volume firepower. A 30 shot clip of 7.62x39 trumps the 9mm every time, and they don't cost that much more to shoot. They just don't have pistol grips.

NO! I had one given to me several years ago and I ended up giving it away to someone needing a parts pistol! :banghead:

Maybe, Maybe not. I find saying I am never going to do something causes me to be in a position where I end up having to do that very thing. I think they are ugly. The only one I shot was a "jam-o-matic". But who knows.
So Maybe, or maybe not.

I have a lot of exposure to High Points. both the 45 and compact 9.

they are strangely very accurate, and normally reliable. EVEN SO, I would take a Bersa over them any day. THEY ARE HUGE AND THEY ARE HEAVY. You would THINK that a huge heavy gun would have reduced recoil, but its JUST AS BAD OR WORSE than comparable handguns because of its direct blow-back operation.

You think a full sized 1911 is a big pistol? lets see how it compares to the highpoint 45:

Its a boat anchor.

Another one? If it was cheap enough...

Don't forget to show the standard magazine capacity for those two... ;) (maybe... that looks like an older model...)

(Law Enforcement is using the carbine...)

To shoot? NO...

To throw at somebody like a rock? quite possibly.

To put it in the intruders hand after I've shot him? PRICELESS!

just kidding, I really wouldnt waist the money.

A shootin' buddy of mine has one in 9mm and is very good with it! It's his only handgun. My range report; reliable, crappy trigger, and has too much muzz flip.

Bersas are great but they are only .380acp. If you want a .45acp nothing can touch the price of a Hi-Point. At that power level your choices are limited to guns like the surplus CZ52 etc. Even those have their problems like decockers that fire rounds off unexpectedly, brittle firing pins that break after just a few dry fires and roller bearings that are soft or out of round.

I guess you might be able to get a Cobra Patriot or something but I'm pretty sure they are around $300.

If Hi-Point would just make their guns so it was safe to carry a round in the chamber I think I could live with the ugly factor.

I can afford better, higher quality guns than a Hi-Point. So what? That didn't stop me from buying one. Not every gun HAS to have a dedicated purpose, at least not to me. If they did I guess I wouldn't have a dozen 22's, or two Mosin-Nagants that I've never fired and probably never will.

I bought a Hi-Point to see if it was as bad as "everyone" on the internet said it would be. Well, I must have gotten a gem because it pretty much runs like a watch. That's not to say it's never malfunctioned, but for the most part it's worked about as well as most other guns I've ever owned.

It's not my carry gun. It's not my home defense gun. It's just a gun. I haven't fired it in a couple of years, but I know it will work right now if I go get it. If I had to carry it, or use it to defend my self or my house, I wouldn't hesitate to. I wouldn't say it's the best $140.00 I ever spent of a gun, but it's not the worst either.

Bersas are great but they are only .380acp.

No they're not. You might want to check the current Bersa product line.

As for the question, I have absolutely no use for a Hi-Point. To me, it's like a beat-up import hatchback. It'll get you where you want to go most of the time but that's it. I don't need one if I have something else in my stable.

hell no the only good they serve is to beat someone on the head with .....oh wait there made of plastic lol

Yes I think it would make a great kayak gun. I wouldn't care if it got rusty or abused and wouldn't mind if law enforcement took it from me.

A shootin' buddy of mine has one in 9mm and is very good with it! It's his only handgun.

Beware the man with one gun. He's probably really good with it.

Hi Point

+1 to Moooose102 "certainly! #1, i dont collect guns, i accumulate, AND shoot them. to me, a gun i cant shoot belongs in some rich guys vault. that makes it a work of art, not a firearm. there are plenty of good reasons to buy one."

I have a few inexpensive guns that I love, like a RIA .45 and a Walther P22.
I might have to add one to the accumulation.

If I put that THING in my safe I bet you my 1911 would up and shoot me in the nuts.

If that was the only think I could afford and had to have one for protection you better believe I would buy it. But I have a Kimber Custom II right now that is deadnuts out to 50 yards. So I have no use for a High Point right now.
