I always thought that Capitalism provided three basic choices - work, starve, or get shot trying to rob a Gas-n-Grab. <shrug> Silly me.If you don't protect society's weakest, capitalism becomes far less palatable to those at the bottom. You need social welfare (and SS etc.) to hold crime down and keep those individuals involved in the economy.
What do you consider the crossover point in a welfare program between holding down crime via bread-n-circuses and simply encouraging otherwise-productive folk to sit around and watch soap operas instead of producing?
