Would you rather have 15 round of 9mm, or 8 rounds of 45 in your carry gun

All I own is .45acp, no 9mm, and I have .45's that carry as little as 6 rounds (XDs) and that's fine by me.

Neither.

When one finds oneself assailed by malcontents who reject not only rule of law but common human decency, a Gentlemen is advised to arm himself with a double barreled pistol of not less than 54 bore, of the pattern commonly called "Howda" on the subcontinent.

If the Gentleman is of proper breeding and possessed of steely nerve, two well placed slugs will fell even the most determined Hashishin or blood crazed Thugee strangler.

If faced with more than one adversary, simply shoot the leader and the rest will surely scatter before your baleful gaze and well waxed mustache.

+1 Valkman. I currently carry a .45 with 8+1 and a spare 8 round mag. Practice, practice, practice. If I can hit what I aim at in stressful training situation I will be prepared for the real deal. I hope that never happens but "fast is smooth and smooth is fast" is what I hope my skills are. My .45 will hopefully handle any such situations.

If you carry a 1911, would you rather carry it as is? If there was a magical way for it to shoot 15+1 rounds

It's called a 2011... :)

and you can get them to shoot from 15-26rds of 9mm...

I worried and studied and worried about the choice between 9MM and .45 so much that I settled for 9 rounds of 10MM.

Now that is purdy. If only my dealer had one reserved for me at a magical price.:)

I would rather have 15 rnds of 9mm than 8 rnds of .45. Now if you asked if I would rather have 13 rnds of .45 or 17 rnds of 9mm, I would say .45. In the summer I carry 15rnds of 9mm, but in the winter I carry 15 rnds of 10mm.

If I were an LEO I would choose capacity over caliber, but as a civilian living in a fairly safe area i'm not overly concerned with dressing around a higher capacity gun.

I normally carry a 5 shot revolver, or 7+1 9mm(Shield) or 5+1 .45acp(XDs).

When working, I pocket carry a scandium 340 w/ 2 speed loaders in the left pocket.

When belt carrying, 90% of the time it is a Sig 226 or 2022. Lately though I've been on a 1911 kick; after carrying the 226, I had forgotten how nice the slim 1911 is on the hip.

Next month I'll probably be back to the nine. Mathematically it makes more sense; no significant statistical difference in real world shootings, more controllable, more ammo on deck. The debate is pretty much settled with modern ammo for anyone with an honest, open mind.

Still, carry is about a FEELING of security as well as tactical advantage, and that big .45 is very comforting.

I have been a 1911 fan for many years.

The pistol I shoot most is also the pistol I shoot best. It's a Kimber 1911 in .45ACP.

I believe (Knowing the above) that carrying anything other than a 1911 in .45ACP would be foolish of me.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Cost of ammo is totally NOT a factor for me.

I feel equally comfortable carrying a LW Commander with 8+1 rounds of good 230 grain JHPs as I do packing my SIG P-228 with 15+1 rounds of 124 grain +P JHPs ...

Again, price is no factor. I budget for ammo the same way as our family budgets for gas or food. I am great with a 1911, and good with a 9mm DA/SA, and my SIGs feel as good to me as my 1911s.

I typically carry two spare mags when I'm packing a 1911, and one spare 18-round mag when packing a 228/229. But the numbers really mean nothing to me. It's really about the platform and how comfortable I am with it ...

Lots of 9mm bullets is a compelling thing. I shoot service-sized 9mm pistols better than almost everything else except .22LR. I don't even own a .45ACP, though I like them fine. I can shoot a .45, but never as fast or as well as the 9mm.

Gonna go with neither. I carry 7+1 of 9mm, with another 7 in a spare mag.

Occasionally, I'll carry 12+1 of 9mm with an additional 15 in a spare mag.

If I get the rifle I'm looking at (Rossi single shot in .44 mag), then I'll look into a Blackhawk in .44 mag, also, which would fit into my carry rotation.

NOW were talkin, sam.

:D

Beyond that- carry what you are good with- 9, 45, 40, .22 or .177, or 44

If you carry it because its bigger, but you cant shoot it for a hoot- thats a mighty nice TALISMAN, ya got there.

The whole "comforting, not comfortable" smacks of this in the highest regard.

Get one of each. Shoot 50 rounds through each , each week, for 20 weeks, and keep score.

In the end, what you carry should be pretty obvious- 2 bullets to 15- where they go counts far more than how many you let fly, and you aren't likely to light off more than a few in any "reasonable" encounter. If you have to reload, chances are they are too- or you're a horrible shot- please see argument above.

If you can only afford to buy one gun, and are debating what to buy- find a range that rents pistols before you do- and try more than one.

NOW, if you plan on breaching, totally different story. Most people don't regularly enough to even warrant the discussion.

Personally, I carry a knife, an ice pick, a hatchet, a straight razor, a pair of scissors, a chainsaw, six knitting needles, and a broken whiskey bottle.

Always while reading the sunday New York Times.

If a 6' tall dude who is pushin 325 and likes to arm wrestle for kicks- donned in black horned rim glasses reading the Times, eyeing you up like a fair sausage doesn't scare you away- I doubt anything in my pocket is gonna do it anyway.

Assuming your carry, may be different than your home defense options. This would be directed more towards a confrontation that just occurred without warning. Also if you normally carry extra mags, please put that down also.
I am curious to see if folks are drifting away from the 45 due to the cost of practice ammo.
Why don't you just ask that then? I don't see where capacity or carrying extra mags has anything to do with the cost of ammo. All you've done is reword the age old 9mm vs .45/capacity vs caliber debates that have been beaten to death in this and every other forum.

To answer what appears to be your actual question - No, I haven't changed my carry habits due to ammunition costs.

More ammo is always better, so is a bigger bullet as long as the capacity is relatively close to the same. I like the 9mm, I really like the .45, but my favorite is the .40 and that's what I carry since I can have capacity and a good sized bullet in a 9mm sized platform.

Probably go with the higher capacity 9mm. as that's what I have the most of for CCW.

Carry what you can shoot best.

I like the .45.
No matter what I carry I most always carry spare mags, dress permitting.

Misses do not count!
