I've been considering a few different 9mm pistols to add to my battery, and after handling a few, I have decided on the XD9, but with some reservations.

I've heard that if there is any kind of parts breakage, or if anything needs to be replaced, you have to send the gun to the factory to get it fixed. Apparently, they won't let the owner do their own work. And I've heard that it can cost $40 to do the shipping. And I've heard that this fact has caused others to go with a different gun as a result. If something breaks, it makes sense to pay a local gunsmith, or better yet, buy the part yourself and replace it.

But how often does this "breakage" occur on an XD? Does anyone here have any experience?

I've had 2 XD's. An XD9 service and an XD sub 9mm.

Thousands of rounds between them and ZERO failures of any kind.

Don't know about the SA service dept - Never needed them :D

Most of the time I have found that the only part on the 9mm XD that may fail and that is the extractor.

The .40 caliber can have guide rod problems and sometimes a broken ejector.

These problems do exist but the vast majority of their owners will never have a problem. These are good quality reliable firearms.

I love my XD-45acp. No problems yet. The rumor you heard about the service might be correct, however. I did inquire what night sights they would recommend, and was told only they can install sights on the XP, period.

Dave (I decided to put a front night sight on my CZ-82 and leave the XD-45 for range work only, at least until all heck breaks loose! )

Me, no, but I've only had it for 2.5 months, with less than 200 rounds through it yet. Now that it's getting warm I plan to give it a good workout.

Everything made breaks. I suggest you look over XD Talk forums.

The complicated captive guide rod is one possible point of failure (for which aftermarket alternatives exist).

I've had an HS2000 since they came out. Not one problem. Over 10,000 rounds.

Bought an XD9 a month after they hit the ground. Not one problem. Over 5,000 rounds.

We have all models in our rental case. They have roughly 1000 rounds per week fired and so far all we have had to do is replace the recoil spring about once a year.

Overall they are much stronger than their counterparts, which have to be sent back to the factory every six months for new frames or slides.

Your right on target~!

Springfield Armory likes to inspect and fix any XD parts breakage theselves,
in their own facility. I've never heard of them selling replacement parts for
these weapons to anyone. But OTOH, I've also not heard of any of their
XD's brreaking- so GO FIGURE~!:scrutiny:  ;) :D

Use the search. I've replaced the front sights on my XD9 and XD45 with Dawson Precision fiber optics. More difficult than reasonable on the XD9 but doable if you are well equipped with tools, XD45 came off pretty much like any other.

I've got about 750 rounds through my XD9. My rear sight came loose at approximately 520 rounds and had to be replaced. I paid the shipping to ship it to Springfield, they fixed it and shipped it back at no cost to me. Took about a week and a half from the day I shipped the slide until the day I had it at my doorstep. This is the only problem I've had with mine.

The pin that holds the firing pin broke on my XD9 Tactical. I replaced it with a nail (they use a roll pin). I sold it ' couple of weeks ago.
Make sure to use snap caps when dry firing. That's all I can think of that might have caused it.

No breakage yet, and I've fired over 1,000 rounds.

There's one range whose .40 reloads simply DO NOT get along with the XD. Otherwise, every factory reload or pure factory round I've fed it has been flawless, and no parts have broken at all.

Nope, low rounds though. I did lose a firing pin spring and SA said send in the slide. They put a new one in the slide at no charge because they would not sell me one.

I don't know where that little SOB spring went to. POOF, it just disapeared:)

I have an XD-45 Tactical, which is one of the more reliable autoloaders I've owned. The accuracy is quite acceptable at 25 yards. The 13-round capacity is extraordinary as everyone knows. It is a very comfortable handgun to grip. Most believe it is the grip angle, which I can readily believe. I also note the felt recoil seems less than most other .45 ACP autoloaders. It is a simple single-action gun and easy to maintain.

The big drawback of course is the lack of available parts other than those captured at SA. I believe this problem will eventually cause a dwindling market share that SA has enjoyed for awhile. Most enthusiasts compare the XD with Glock. Many find the XD cheaper and more comfortable to shoot, but Glock has a huge after-market supply. I don't own a Glock so I do not have first-hand knowledge for comparison. The fixed, one-piece grip disappoints those who would like to change the grip. The best solution is to add a rubber "bra" around the existing grip. That can be fashioned from a bicycle tube and anchored with hairspray.

I don't place my XD in the same category as my .45 ACP SIGs or my H&K USP Expert .45 ACP, which are definitely superior in features, quality, and accuracy. There is no way the single-action XD is anywhere near as accurate as my single-action SIG GSR Revolution 1911 clone. However, the XD is a very good handgun for the money.

I have just over 11,000 rounds through my xd9 Tac and have no issues. Started shooting in July '05.

I have 2000 rounds through a XD-9 without a single problem. I'm satisfied with it.

8,000 through my 4" 40 with no problems. I do have 2 magazines that don't feed real well (out of 12), but I use them for practice.

About 1000 through my nephew's; I only know because I shot near 50% of them. No failures or breakage.
