Hello all,

I have a Rossi 92 in .357 with the 16 inch barrel. Very handy little rifle with a nice slick action. The only real problem with the rifle is the sights. They're pretty basic and hard to see. Plus, due to the short barrel, the sight radius is very short, making precise aiming difficult. I've used it this year as a nice little woods deer rifle. Shot a fat doe at about 40 yards.

What I'm wondering is if anyone has installed peep sights on a 92? I don't like scout scopes, so a scope is out of the question due to the action. I like aperture sights, but I'm not sure I like the look at the side mounted Williams sight. I am looking at these:

They make a set for the 92. Anyone used these? Mine is an older, pre-safety 92, that has the front sight integral to the barrel band. Any tips or information from anyone with a 92 would be appreciated.

I looked at that Skinner sight, and it looks like a good one. But I was hoping for something a little closer to the eye. For me, an aperture sight works best as close to the eye as possible. Plus, the Skinner wouldn't gain me anything in sight radius. No one out there has any experience with the XS sights on levers, specifically the Rossi?

I was concerned about that too (eye distance).

Don't be. It works JUST fine, and a quantum leap over the irons that came with the 92.

I have a Lyman 66A on my 16" Rossi M92. All that was required was that two holes be drilled and tapped. Properly located, one mounting screw will be over the mortise and may need to be shortened slightly so that it doesn't interfere with the left locking lug. Not a big deal, as it will still have enough thread to provide a secure mount. It works very nicely with the exisiting front sight, which is handy as it's integral with the barrel band.

IIRC, the only XS units that I've seen advertised for M92-type carbines consist of a replacement open rear with the old "express rifle" style vee and a replacement front blade with their signature large white bead. Very reminiscent of the ones which used to be popular on Dangerous/African game rifles from the late 19th to the mid 20th century.

Also IIRC, these are designed primarily for the standard 20" bbl. carbines which have the front sight mounted in a dovetail cut just abaft the barrel band. As Rossi dovetails aren't usually of the U.S. standard dimensions for either nominal width or included angle, I would assume that these are made quite "oversized" and some fairly significant amount of hand fitting may well be required to install them. On a "Trapper", the exisiting front blade would need to be machined or ground off of the barrel band and a new dovetail cut in the barrel to mount the new front blade.

Thanks. That's very useful information and exactly what I was looking for. You just saved me a lot of headache. I think I will go with the Lyman.
