Having never shot BP before, a couple weeks ago I had set a date with my new darling Pietta 51 Navy in .44 at the shooting range, so when I woke up that Saturday with the flu I did not even care (until later LOL)

Had a real blast out there and had to giggle a little bit at the looks of admiration from the other shooters, but the best feeling was just seeing the smoke and watching the lead destroy backstop R/R ties

Since I had read over and over and over about how EVERYONE ends up loading a ball after forgetting to charge the cylinder, I was constantly telling myself that EYE would not do that!! HAAAHAHAH the look on my face when I saw that ball WAY down the cylinder and realizing that I HAD done this must have been pretty funny...first I was :cuss: and :banghead: and then just a roll of laughter at myself ROFL!! My local shoppie only had Pyrodex pellets in stock so adding powder to clear the cylinder was not an option, therefore I was a cylinder short for about half the day but that was still ok...even that mishap could not get the smile off my face.

I got home and got the stuck ball out by putting a nail through the nipple opening and forcing it through the front of the cylinder then went on to clean. Cleaning is very messy and smelly and can't say I enjoyed doing that while sick with the flu, but I don't think it will be too terrible next time provided I am good and healthy.

...anyway, I just wanted to share the news that there is a new member of the club of black powder shooters for life :D

The one time I forgot powder I used a wood screw to get the ball out. I blame it on the wonder wads. The extra step threw me off because I wasn't used to it. Oh, and congrats on the new addiction. Black Powder is like cocain, only slightly less expensive with fewer health hazzards.

who was it that said" it is not if you will load a ball in a powderless chamber but rather when"

A deck screw has worked in the past for me. I keep one in my shooting kit. I did it once right outside in the woods at my house and used a drill/ The bit in the drill spun the ball right up and out of the cylinder.

In the bottom of the container of my pellets was enough powder to make up 2-3 pellets.
I used it to make some heavy loads when I was about out. :D

Evil

I did that once. Mine was even better. i Came home from the range took everything apart. put the parts in hot soap water. Then i took them out piece by piece brushing them with an old toothbrush. Yep then i pulled out the cylinder and saw the ball still inside. i guess the cap must have fallen off and when i did not see a cap i thought i was done. so an easier fix to that is. Remove the nipple then you can use almost anything to tap it out.
