You can have only One Rifle, which one do you pick?

A classic, but an ugly duckling to most -

Remington Model 30S in 257 Roberts. A heavier rifle with smooth action, light recoil and a handsome, vintage appearance in a classic caliber.

one - has to be a military caliber, IOW, whatever the military in your country uses. So: 5.56 or 7.62x51

two - weapon has to be reliable, and able to be worked on by the user/owner.

Since this is a "has to do it all" rifle, I'd choose what I've chosen: the FAL.

Acceptable accuracy
Mag fed
Relatively affordable
Relatively easy to work on in the home shop
Acceptable cartridge

KelTec RFB is still unproven, HK/CETME/M1A/etc are all harder to work on than the FAL. Other rifles in civilian styles, like lever actions, bolts, etc all have various issues when dealing with certain social situations.

I'll stick with the FAL.

Honestly, I don't know what people are thinking. If things go bad and I need a self-defense gun, durable, knock down power, and could hunt if I have to...AK-47 PLEASE! I will take a Trijicon TA31DOC ACOG 4x32 BAC Illuminated Crosshair Rifle Scope w/ Red Dot Sight and TA51 Mount Riflescope. Yep that pretty much will do it! Come get it!!! Oh yeah my bad, I'll take five banana clips too!

I thought the FN FAL was a weapon from Belgium..? Hell if the FN FAL is a choice, I'd stick with that. Give me an FAL with a big sack full of 30 round box mags and I'll have dinner on the table every night.

This has been one of the better threads on the "there can be only one" theme.

I ran through and did a tally of decisive choices. A few posts could not actually choose one and a few more chose a caliber rather than a rifle - those were not counted (with the exception of rimfire);

M1 Carbine....... 1
SKS.................2
FAL..................5
AK47................8
rimfire...............8
Garand.............10
M1A/M14..........11
Lever action
(centerfire).....17
AR15
(any configuration)...19
Other
(shotgun, combo, etc.)...8

And the leader of the pack so far....
drum roll please.....

Bolt Action (centerfire)..........20

Not SAE approved. For entertainment purposes only. Your mileage may vary.

It has to be a 30.06

If I can only have one weapon it would have to be the 30.06. We didn't over come the adversaries in WWII for no reason. General Patton didn't label the M1 Garand the greatest battle implement the world has ever seen for no reason at all. The 30.06 round can do just about any job out there with the properly sized bullets. No other caliber can claim as wide a use as the 30.06. That's what my one rifle would have to be. Yes you only get eight rounds, but their eight rounds that kill just about anything you hit with them -- if you don't kill it, you definitely take it out of action!

I feel like I won this thread! My original reply was a bolt action (currently leading the choices), in .30-06., .....................................................

Does the Zorg ZF-1 count? ;)

Okay, okay, I admit, the ZF-1 has two relatively major drawbacks....
1: the Little Red Button...
2: it's fictional ;)

seriously though, my "just one" would be a bolt-action .30-06, like my Savage 111, find a way to MacGuyver a 10+ round magazine for it (20 would be ideal), or just have a pile of loaded 4 rounders ready to go

as has been stated numerous times upthread, the 30-06 is a versatile cartridge, from 55 grain .223 sabots to 250 grain .30 caliber thumpers, from light varmint loads to calibers that can slay the majestic møøse, or any animal on the American continent

My one rifle would be my Savage 111, with a decent scope, and bipod, and all the rest put into ammo and training

if this was a SHTF/fend for yourself/live off the land situation, I'd basically kit myself up with three firearms, my 30-06 as my primary rifle, my Ruger Mark II bull barrel (for varminting and small-game hunting), and my Mossberg 500 for hunting birds and close range hunting with shotgun slugs

If it was a Zombie Uprising and I was sheltering in place, I'd switch over to a Ruger 10/22 (assuming the .22 is capable of zombie-brain-scrambling headshots) for the combination of vast quantities of portable ammo, quiet report, and long times between reloading (stock up on 25 round mags pre Zompocalypse), and my Kimber Custom II .45 for close-in protection

Sorry, but if things really went bad I will take a fully automatic knock down machine rather than a bolt action that holds 5 cartridges.

Not a vote - just an observation. I'm kinda surprised that nobody has mentioned (unless I missed it) a particular rifle here.

I always thought if you had a magic blender and dumped in a M1A, a M1 Carbine, and a AR15 then chopped/mashed/pureed them together you would pour out a Ruger Mini-14 (substitute a AK-47 for the AR15 and you get a Mini-30).

It's said that out of the box accuracy is lacking until they've been tinkered with, but the ones I've shot were very robust and fun to shoot.

I actually prefer having each one of the ingredients to the recipe myself ;)
