Your Backup - Same Caliber as Primary?

No

I often carry a BUG [ force of habit from doing it on the job ] but most of the time I do not carry same calibers.

My reasoning is that I am not going to reload either one IF/unless its a true "shoot out".

I believe the term New York Reload is the one most have heard and it referenced the city PD when they carried a .38 model 10 ,and the fastest reload was the snub S&W they also carried .

Times and reloading techniques have changed a great deal since I was issued a 12 round loop, and thank G-D for that.

But I do believe in a BUG = IF and only IF you are comfortable with the responsibilty of keeping track of 2 LIVE guns.

Many choose not to due to that reason, they are nervous and are not comfortable with such.

A gun is an EMERGENCY piece of equiptment and as such it is subject to failure at THE worst time.

If your lifesaving handgun should fail during its use on the range - take it home and get it fixed.

If it fails when in use saving your butt - you had better have a good plan = My plan is a BUG.And of course shoot that as often as your CCW primary.

I'm sitting here wearing the following:

Primary: G19C (15 rounds +1)
Back-up: G26 (10 rounds +1)
Spare Mags: 4, 17-round
Ammo: Winchester Ranger +P+, 115 grain, HPs.

My primary two carry guns are a single-stack 9mm and a doublestack .45, depending on how discreet I need to be.

If I carry a backup, which I don't do habitually, but sometimes, it's a .38 J-Frame in a pocket. I like being able to have a hand on my gun without drawing any attention at all.

So no, I don't have caliber commonality. :)

Just saying but 4 spare mags and a round count totaling 95 rounds seems excessive to me. Not even cops carry that much and I'm just sitting here with my Hi Power and no reloads and feel perfectly safe.

I haven't read all the responses, but I was just thinking about this last week. I don't currently carry a BUG, but if I were to, I would try to carry the same caliber. I would also try to carry pistols with interchangable mags, for semi-autos. And same round count revolver. Both in the same calibers. You don't want to waste time and or jam a gun trying to insert the wrong mag or speed loader.
I'd say it's one of the first things to consider when thinking of a BUG. The last thing you want it to fumble around with the wrong ammo when you need it most.
On the other hand, are BUG allowed in all states that allow either Open or Concealed carry? Something else to consider. Here in Missouri you can carry what and as many pistols as you like. And, un-like some states, we are not limited to one particular pistol, caliber, or such. Our permits are for "Concealed Carry Weapons" which don't limit us to pistols. Un-like states that issue permits that are for pistols only, and or restrict to a particular pistol that you qualify with.

Texas doesnt have a caliber or number restriction just that if you quilify with a revolver you can only carry revolvers. If you qualify with a simiauto you can carry anything. In typing this I come up with a question. Im sure its never happened before but what if someone qualifies with a single shot or darrenger?
