Your favorite 'plinking' .40 cal handgun

I am sitting on a ton of 40 s&w ammo and I don't really have a handgun I enjoy shooting it from. What is your favorite 40 cal handgun to use on the range (or for HD, etc. - not for carry)?

A glock 22 with an external comp. i also have a glock 24 that ain't too shabby either.

Sig SP2022. With a slightly shorter muzzle and a slightly heavier than average weight, the gun seems to tame the recoil better than my personal favorite (M&P40 FS). It's an affordable Sig (oxymoron?) and a ton of fun to shoot. You can probably pick one up in the low $300's but that's not a whole lot less than a brand new one. The good news is that even if you don't like it, you can sell it for a very tiny loss and not be out much money (probably less than the cost of a rental session). Try to get one with at least 2 magazines as they can be expensive unless your timing is perfect on a mag sale. Sig had a promo last summer for 3 free mags and it may come around again.

I know that I am not answering your question by its own terms, but if you find .40 in your present guns unpleasant, why not get a Hi-Point Carbine in .40 S&W? You might find 40 more pleasant in a rifle.

I really like my XDm 3.8". It's pretty accurate but not amazing or anything. It does well enough for SD and for plinking it does great. I haven't shot a whole bunch of .40's though. I trusted SA so I bought one they made and it worked out well.

Even though the .40S&W has fallen out of favor of late, I like it and am heavily invested in it gun-wise. I have a number of pistols in that caliber, and among my favorites are a Glock 24 and M&P Pro 5" for range guns. Both are accurate and a blast (pun intended) to shoot.

I gave up on the round in sub-compacts such as the Walther PPS, Kahr PM40 and Shield, because I found it too snappy in such small guns, but I have HKs in P2000 and P2000SK in this caliber which handle the round just fine. They are also fun to shoot, along with the Glock 23 and (believe it or not)Taurus Millennium 24/7.

XDM 4.5" model. It's an excellent gun to shoot, even in the snappier calibers. They're extremely solid guns and hold up well to use.

I have G22/G23/G27 and M&P40.

When I am conducting load development or verifying accuracy of loads, I usually reach for G22. Even though G23 has shorter barrel, it is surprisingly accurate. G27 is simply fun to shoot, especially with lower recoil reloads and will almost duplicate G22 groups at 15/25 yards.

With that said, my sister/wife prefers M&P40 and I think it's due to more comfortable grip and better ergonomics. IMO, the captured recoil spring assembly of M&P40 provides better recoil reduction than G22 and older shooters with arthritis seem to agree with M&P40 being more comfortable to shoot.

IMO, if you want better ergonomics with comfortable grip for "plinking", accurized M&P40 with trigger job/APEX trigger parts is the way to go.

With Glocks/M&P40, once you go through the 40S&W ammo, you can use 9mm/conversion barrels to shoot 9mm too. Best of both worlds.

I only have one .40 cal, an HK P30L. It shoots great, feels about like a 9mm.

I enjoy shooting every carry piece I own. But pinned down to a current "favorite" 40 for range work and tin can blasting ... FN FNS-40.

I'm in the same boat....I traded my p229 but kept around 1000 factory rounds, 500 reloads and a set of dies.

Now I'm thinking about a CZ p-07. But since I'm totally invested in 9mm I'd like one I could find parts to convert to a 9mm when I wanted. Maybe an M&P pro.

Last .40 I had was a Kahr CW40 and while recoil was a bit snappy it was still manageable. Have been thinking about getting another one just because I still have quite a bit of leftover ammo for it.

G35 with fiber sights. It's the only 40 S&W I have. I agree it's snappier than 45 ACP or 9mm.
