Your Favorite Rifle (of the week, season, or all-time)

Ruger 77 mkII in 30/06 shoots like a damn match rifle and has flat out killed everything I’ve pointed it at.

I’ve probably had it 15 years now and it’s one that will never be sold

Plus, it can be used as an emergency paddle if your outboard dies! :D

Not my pick for one-and-only since that would be an apocalyptic nightmare scenario and it would be an AR out of necessary practicality.

Still, if you mean which am I most FOND OF, well......

It would have to be my silly 1st Gen. Universal Carbine. Looks good, easy on the shoulder, nearly %100 reliable, and way more accurate than a carbine has a right to be. Only mod is a GI trigger housing, otherwise just how it left the shed in Hialeah, lol.

One favorite for each of two categories: rimfire and centerfire. Rimfire is my Ruger 10/22 which I have had now for over 40 years. Never misses a beat, incredibly durable, and most of all was accurate right out of the box.

Centerfire is my Colt AR 15 SP1 Sporter, almost the same age as the 10/22. Same attributes too with reliable performance in all kinds of weather, a solid, well built rifle, and can still get the job done out to 200 yards with iron sights.

As inspired by the Your Favorite Handgun thread, what would you say is your favorite rifle? This could be your favorite of the week, the season, the year, or for all-time.

The way I'd answer this question is if I can only keep one rifle from those that I have, which one would it be? The answer has to be my first Accuracy International AW that I bought about 10 years ago. It came with the factory Lothar Walther .308 Win barrel installed but currently has a Bartlein 6.5 CM barrel screwed on, but I'll probably switch it back to .308 Win once the Kimber 8400 6.5 PRC is up and running.

I have more than a few nice rifles but I'd pick the AW over everything else for various reasons. Even though it's heavy I've used it for hunting and shot a mule deer buck through the heart at 350 yards in nasty freezing conditions. I had to belly crawl 50+ yards dragging the AW through 12" deep snow to get into a very awkward downhill facing prone shooting position. The AW will stack up 10-shot groups into sub .5 moa at 100 yards using factory ammunition as fast as mirage will allow. It has the smoothest action I've ever encountered and is the smoothest feeding rifle I've encountered with one of the best magazines ever designed. It's 110% reliable, it has an excellent two-stage trigger, 3-position safety, locking bolt handle, and barrel swaps are easy. I should add that being a short action there are so many great options out there and it's just a manageable and practical size, particularly when compared to the two AWM rifles with their longer receivers and 26" or 27" barrels.

It might not be the ultimate PRS rifle or hunting rifle, but it's certainly one of the best hard core, do-it-all and do-it-well rifles on the planet. It's been used by British and other forces in virtually the same format in some really nasty places to great effect, and I even like the thumb hole stock.

The AW is the one in the middle.

I'm just gonna skip what I was gonna say. Your rifle is my favorite. I've always wanted one of those, I'm gonna have to save up my pennies.

What kind of optics and mounts are you running on those?

All the optics have 34mm tubes.

AWM .338 LM (not shown) - NF ATACR 7-35, Spuhr mount
AWM .300 WM (back) - Premier Reticles 5-25, AI factory mount
AW .308 Win/6.5 CM (middle) - Vortex RAZOR HD Gen II 4.5-27, Spuhr mount
AXMC 6.5x47 Lapu (front) - Vortex RAZOR HD Gen II 4.5-27, Spuhr mount

I keep returning to my Remington R-25 time and time again. Heavy, yes, especially with the big scope, but it's a tack-driver par excellence and ridiculously easy to shoot supported. That's what I took the (trotting) deer with last week, POI being within an inch from POA. Dozens have fallen to it over the years. My all-time favorite? Possibly.

Daily/weekly/monthly favorites vary. I find myself veering towards rifles I have the most confidence in for the job at hand, ie. the ones I've shot the most. And the more I like a rifle, the more I shoot it.

Today? Have to be my Marlin 39A. Love that darn thing even though I've only had it a couple months. And it's darn accurate with the Williams peep on it.

I have a soft spot in my heart for all rimfires, but my grandad's New Haven 251 is a perennial favorite. My 572 Fieldmaster is a close second. Both have a lot of good memories.

But the one rifle that will be with me til the end, is my Remington 700 in 30-06. Like so many others have said, it has kept me in meat for many years, and hopefully for many years to come.

For the past couple of years, my favorite rifle to use is my Interarms Mark X Cavalier with walnut stock, traditional satin blued metal, 23.6" / 600mm barrel in 25-06 Remington. I mounted a KonusPro Plus 3.5-10X44mm IR scope which has served me well hunting deer and feral hogs. I have other rifles, both milsurp & commercial but right now the reduced recoil vs 30-06 Springfield and accuracy has served me well. I had cataract surgery 2 days ago in my left eye as the medicine I've been receiving as injections into my left eyeball to address complications from a partial retinal tear event in Nov 2018 had a side effect of rapidly accelerating cataract development in that eye. We'll see what 2021 brings, literally.
