Your Favorite Rifle (of the week, season, or all-time)

Of all times, hard to say. Probably my Garand or M1a. I have a few that I won’t sell but don’t know if I’ll ever have a favorite. That’s why I keep buying new guns.

For this week / month it’s this little Glenfield 30A. I got it planning on changing the stocks and maybe going with a straight lever/grip. Now I’ve gotten to enjoy that 70’s looking stock art and it carries great in the woods. Also no way I’m getting rid of the curved grip after actually shooting it some. I just started working on loads for it and find an excuse to take it to the range a lot lately.

Geez.... Ask me to pick my favorite dog!!!!

I love my Rube Goldberg Rifles.
M1 Carbine
M1A
Mini 14 (Yes.... I said Mini 14)

I love my Lever Actions.

My latest fascination and tinkering project is a Henry H010X since I finally have a big bore suppressor.

I ordered the big 'Can for my 45 Raptor (another fun piece of hardware).

When I found out I could get a threaded 45-70 Lever... I decided it was time to add that one to the collection since I already had a muffler on the way. LOL
I always wanted a 45-70 Lever to keep the others company.

I have some bigger, better, badder, meaner, faster stuff, but I really like the gadgetry aspect of things.

You'll have to forgive me, but I'm bouncing off the walls a bit bored at the moment.

As inspired by the Your Favorite Handgun thread, what would you say is your favorite rifle? This could be your favorite of the week, the season, the year, or for all-time.

I'll start with my favorite of 2020, which happens to be my Marlin 1894 in .357 magnum. What a sweet short range shooter. Women and men alike seem to enjoy shooting it, too.

Most importantly, I really like shooting it and I really like the way it looks. I definitely like 19th and 20th century lever guns, but some of these 21st century lever guns really call to me now.

Y'all please share your favorites and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Favorite of the week is a Savage 111 in 22-250 with a 26" 1-8 varmint profile.
All time is my Rossi 92 in 357. It will cover a lot of my shooting needs.

I had cataract surgery 2 days ago in my left eye as the medicine I've been receiving as injections into my left eyeball to address complications from a partial retinal tear event in Nov 2018 had a side effect of rapidly accelerating cataract development in that eye. We'll see what 2021 brings, literally.

I sure hope you recover fully well, Zorg!

I'm rather used to, and fond of, using the curved grip on lever guns. They add a little bulk and weight compared to a straight grip, but they sure work fine when it comes to shootin'. :)

Can't answer with regard to "all time." My interests and tastes have evolved over the years. I tend to be attracted first by a cartridge and then the rifle to launch it. Two of my current favorites, both fairly recent additions, are a Ruger Hawkeye African in .375 Ruger and a custom Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in .280 Ackley Improved.

Mini 14. Why? It fits, carries easily, and seems to point naturally for me. Got something better for every possible use and still prefer to shoot this Ruger as my general plinker. Chopped the barrel earlier this year and it noticeably improved accuracy and stringing - really wish had done that 30 years ago LOL.

Probably my Marlin 336S .30-30, mounting a different scope up on Warne QR rings:

IMG-1546.jpg

It is a Remington, it is smooth, it cycles flawlessly and it is considerably accurate for a lever rifle. It loves the Hornady Lever stuff. It has the RPP lever bolt, RPP medium lever, RPP loading gate, WWG Happy Trigger and WWG Bear Proof ejector and WWG aluminum follower. I did some smithing on the loading gate and other parts that I have learned over the decades of fooling with Marlins.

Runner up is this JM Texan .30-30. It shows the patina of a worked and well cared for hunting rifle. Here is just got a RPP loading gate and an RPP trigger.

IMG-1551.jpg

It is a lot more willing to go hunting that I am. Under the butt plate, in pencil, is scrawled "Texan" and so I figure that on the assembly process Texan stocks were identified as such though I never saw such identification on the fore stock so maybe they kept the matching stocks bundled together until assembled?

I really like my 700SPS in an AICS chassis. 308win

My two deer have dropped due to this 700BDL Varmint in 243win

Perhaps the question is: "what rifle do you want to be buried with?" I'd have a hard time choosing between a M1, or a SMLE.

This week. T1X 22LR

Last week. B14 Hunter .308

Week before that. AB3 6.5CM

It's always changing, but I'd like to have the option for a different favorite for each week of the year.

Always changing here as well. Especially during deer season when there's a rotation of rifles, as long as I'm in a rifle zone. Was in my ladder stand today but that's in shotgun land. Gonna be in a rifle zone tomorrow afternoon and the Marlin 30AS in .30-30 with 1-4x Leupold is next up. IMG_1173.JPG ... Next week in rifle zone it will be the Swedish Mausers turn... IMG_1874.JPG ...I have a lot of fave's.... Depending on my mood and hunting location.

Wow! Lots of nice pictures of nice rifles! I guess my favorite would be one of my Remington 700's. I have one thats bone stock, a Classic in 257 Roberts. I had another Classic in 308 that I gave to my oldest Grandson. I have a few that have been rebarreled, restocked, ect ect and one that the only thing still Remington is the action. And its not stock anymore either.

I know there seems to be a lot of hate for Remington but the 700 has served me well. I often have said that the 700 is to the gun world what the small block Chevy engine is to the auto world.

I've always had a thing for the Mini-14. I got my first around '93/'94 but sold it since it was the non-ranch version and I wasn't a fan of the scope mount system. I then bought a ranch model a couple of years later that I still have. They're incredibly reliable, fun little rifles. I've thought about having the barrel threaded for a suppressor too. How long is the barrel on yours now?

My LITTLE Harry Lawson very custom 600 Remington .308. It fits me and with the right hand can hang like a pistol at my side. It is light, under 7 pounds now scoped with a Swarovski Z6(i) 1.7-10x42 (BT) a lighter slimmer scope more P1020804_zps683b9b03.jpg appropriate to rifle size . It is my go to hunting rifle and the blind magazine hold 5 shots . Notice bolt shroud and safety are fabricated modifications . Everything is trued and engine turned , has an icicle 2 pound trigger mechanism. Notice the recoil pad flair ! The stock is rather diminutive in dimentions and very light so the extra size of the pad is a joy, along with the custom brake ! This rifle was made in 1979 . I bought it 20 years ago with very little use on it. It is a MOA rifle to 300 yards with match ammo or Win 748 and Sierra 150 Game Kings :)

Good thread, and a lot of great guns here!

Your favorite rifle is an open-ended question because there are a several ways to define "favorite." If I define it as which rifle I get the most enjoyment out of operating and shooting whenever the conditions are right to use that gun it'd be the two below, choosing between them is rimfire vs. centerfire and all that entails. If I have a couple hours alone at a private "range" where I can just enjoy shooting, I enjoy these two the most and there's not much else I'd rather be doing with that time. Both of these guns fit me, both have excellent slick actions, and both have great triggers.

The 1958 BRNO Model 4 (.22 LR) is super accurate and a joy to shoot for as long a time as I have available.

The 2002 model CZ 550 Varmint in .308 is the most accurate rifle I've ever shot, and also very enjoyable and rewarding to shoot. Recoil is very mild due to the approximately 12 pound weight, and it'll put round after round virtually on top of each other.

What a slick little rifle that is ... timeless too! It looks like it could have been launched this year by Sako or Blaser. Really cool.

Love those Model 600 & 660 rifles I wish they made them in a left handed model.

I only have a few rifles. I've mostly been a handgunner, more specifically a revolver guy for years. The only ranges I had access to 50-75ft, at those distances rifles didn't make a lot of sense to bring out. When I went hunting, we were a straight wall only state. I've got a R92 that's great for the task and is all kinds of fun. A year ago, I probably would have said that was my favorite. Not too much for the indoor ranges, and did everything I needed during the hunt.

But, now living out in the south west...
I'm more and more glad I hung on to my Remington700.

full&lightbox=1&last_edit_date=1606598495.jpg

It's been reworked a bit. The factory 308win barrel was set back and chamber recut, the muzzle was threaded and recut with a nice break installed. The action was blueprinted, trigger was worked over, and the whole shebang laid in a fiberglass stock and given a neat finish that might be hard to see in the pictures, kind of a spiderweb look to it on the steel.

It'll put Federal Gold Medal Match into one hole. The first sight in group was a three shot, one-holer. Me and my spotter thought I missed the paper completely with my second shot until the third shot barely opened the group a smidge and we walked up to verify. It's repeated the performance many times since.

I may give it a bit of a make over, it deserves some nicer glass and could use a diet. Since it's going from range toy, to hunting rifle it seems fitting. At the least, I'll switch the steel base and rings for a light weight Talley set-up and drop the bulky 4-14x target scope for a Leopold 3-9. I may even inlet the stock for DBM or get a new lighter stock all together, we'll see.
